Ankansan caught in Iowa sent to federal prison on sex charges

A 20-year-old Arkansas man caught in Iowa will spend three decades in federal prison for seeking out a 12-year-old girl for sex. Authorities found Damien Perez of Fayetteville, Arkansas, living in the woods near Knoxville about a year ago. Investigators discovered text messages to the Iowa girl, along with photos she had sent to Perez and confirmed the two did meet and have sex.

Court records indicate the girl wasn’t his first victim. There were as many as 10 others. And the sex wasn’t limited to humans. Perez has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for enticing a minor to engage in illicit sexual activities.

Iowa tight end threatened with gun in hometown of Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Police say a 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of pulling a gun on Iowa tight end Noah Fant. Fant, a graduate of Omaha South High School, told police he was threatened Tuesday night while he was in a northwest Omaha park near his home. Fant says a man he recognized came up to his car window, pointed a gun at him and told him to leave.

Police say they saw Matthew Trimble run into a garage and that he later admitted to confronting Fant. Trimble has been charged with making terroristic threats.

Fant played in six games last season as a freshman for the Hawkeyes, making nine catches for 70 yards and one touchdown.

Maeda rallies Dodgers to 7-3 win over Cardinals

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kenta Maeda fell into a 3-0 hole in the first inning of his first start for the Dodgers in two weeks coming off the disabled list. Then, the Japanese right-hander rallied Los Angeles to a 7-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday night in the series finale.

Maeda (4-2) drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with a two-out single in the fourth off Michael Wacha and turned an inning-ending double play in the fifth to help the Dodgers take two of three from the Cardinals.

Maeda allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings, struck out four and walked two. He missed 13 games with a tight left hamstring while on the DL since May 11. Maeda got off to a rocky start in his return, giving up Jedd Gyorko’s two-run double and Yadier Molina’s RBI single in the first. The Dodgers took over from there.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — The Big Ten had to revise its baseball tournament schedule for the second straight day to avoid starting a game after the event’s predetermined 10 p.m. EDT curfew. The tournament was pushed back because it took 4 hours, 28 minutes for Indiana to defeat Michigan 5-4 in 13 innings in an elimination game. Minnesota’s game against Northwestern, originally scheduled for Thursday night, will be played Friday at 10 a.m.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and Acting Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg are hitting the road. Reynolds’ staff says the pair held public events Thursday and more are set for today (Friday), around the state. They’ll attend events Friday in Hawarden, Mason City, Cedar Rapids and Davenport. Reynolds announced Gregg as her acting lieutenant governor Thursday in her new formal office. She was sworn in Wednesday as Iowa’s 43rd governor.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A divided Iowa Supreme Court has reset the way criminals are charged by redefining when a person is formally arrested. The court ruled Thursday in cases involving three Waterloo men accused of drugging and raping two 15-year-old girls in 2012.

Audit: Iowa athletics IT director submitted false invoices

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A state audit is detailing misspending and potential fraud by the former information technology director of the University of Iowa athletics department. State auditors reported Thursday that Patrick Delin made personal purchases using a university credit card, then “intentionally submitted” false invoices that showed legitimate work items had been purchased.

They say Delin spent thousands traveling to a conference in Colorado that wasn’t related to his work and registering for a Miami conference he didn’t attend. He also gave his wife, a department employee, a university cell phone even though she didn’t need one. The Associated Press first reported this month that Delin resigned in February amid the investigation. A separate internal audit found other weaknesses in the athletic department’s handling of IT equipment.

Iowa gets past Maryland 9-8 in Big Ten tourney

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Matt Hoeg hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning and Iowa beat Maryland 9-8 on Thursday in their Big Ten Tournament baseball opener. Iowa (35-19) was ahead 6-1 before Maryland scored six in a row to take the lead. Solo home runs by Robert Neustrom and Chris Whelan put Iowa up 8-7 in the top of the sixth.

Maryland’s Marty Costes then tied it on a homer, but the Terrapins (34-20) left the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth. Josh Martsching (4-0) got the win for Iowa, which will face Nebraska in the winner’s bracket on Friday.

The Hawkeyes and Terrapins were forced to play Thursday instead of Wednesday because of a rule stating that games can’t start after 10 p.m. EDT.

Atlantic Boys Tennis duo Podhajsky/McDermott start play at State Friday

The Atlantic Boys Tennis Doubles team of Grant Podhajsky and Cooper McDermott get started with play at the state meet on Friday at Byrne’s Park Tennis Complex in Waterloo. The duo qualified for state with a district championship over a squad from Ballard on May 11th. The coaches meeting is set for 8:00am Friday with a seeding meeting immediately to follow. Play will start as soon as the seeding meeting is complete.

This is the second straight season that Podhajsky and McDermott have made it to State and Head Coach Mike McDermott said the guys will need to be at the top of their game to try to advance in the winners bracket this year.

They lost their first round match to a team from Glenwood last year and then were bumped out of the consolation bracket in the first round by a duo from Waverly-Shell Rock. Coach McDermott said they have shown they have what it takes to have success and a big key will be if their serves are strong early on.

Parents of malnourished teen found dead plead not guilty

ADEL, Iowa (AP) — The adoptive parents of a 16-year-old girl who authorities say weighed only 56 pounds when she died have pleaded not guilty in her death. Authorities say Sabrina Ray was found dead May 12 inside the Perry home she shared with her parents, 41-year-old Marc Ray and 40-year-old Misty Ray, and her siblings.

Marc and Misty Ray are each charged with child endangerment causing death, child endangerment causing serious injury and neglect. Police say preliminary autopsy results show Sabrina Ray was severely malnourished.

At a hearing Thursday, the Rays asked a judge to lower their $1 million cash bonds in hopes of being released from jail before their Aug. 28 trials.

Missouri River group to meet June 13 in Mills County

MALVERN–The Iowa watershed approach, providing nearly $100 million to improve rural watersheds, is the focus of the June 13th meeting of the State Interagency Missouri River Authority (SIMRA).

Larry Weber will discuss the Iowa watershed approach and how adopting conservation practices reduces peak stream flows and improves water quality. As director of the University of Iowa’s IIHR Hydroscience and Engineering center, including the Iowa Flood Center, Weber will highlight how funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development can help reduce flooding by improving watershed resiliency.

Other speakers will share progress from the Watershed Management Coalitions for the East and West Nishnabotna rivers, updates on Missouri River conditions and the Missouri River recovery program.

Atlantic Boys Golf shooting for the top at State

The Atlantic Boys Golf Team begins their quest for a state title on Thursday at the Class 3A State Golf Tournament.  The tourney begins on Friday morning at 10:30am at Spring Valley Golf Course in Livermore.  The Trojans earned their way to state by winning their district meet at Atlantic Golf and Country Club on Friday, May 19th.  Atlantic has seen strong play from each of their golfers throughout the season and Head Coach Ed DenBeste said that is definitely a strength of the squad.

Coach DenBeste said it’s tough to compare your team to others in the state but feels like they have played some tough competition throughout the season to prepare them for State.

This is the second year in a row that the Trojans have played in the 3A State Tourney at Spring Valley. Coach DenBeste said most of the guys are fairly familiar with the course but he knows they will need to shoot a lower score this year if they want a shot at a state crown.
