2 recent arrests in Red Oak

Red Oak Police report one person was arrested early this (Sunday) morning on an assault charge. 24-year old David Richard Nash, of Red Oak, was taken into custody at around 3:40-a.m. on a charge of Domestic Abuse Assault/3rd or subsequent offense. Nash was being held without bond in the Montgomery County Jail.

And, at around 8:30-p.m. Saturday, Red Oak Police arrested 35-year old Jesse Donald Trost, of Red Oak, for Possession of a Controlled Substance/Marijuana. Trost was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $1,000 cash bond.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jordy Mercer and Josh Harrison homered and starter Gerrit Cole pitched six innings, lifting the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 7-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals Saturday night. Cole extended his winning streak to three games, allowing five hits and one run with five strikeouts and two walks. Slumping St. Louis has dropped eight of its last 11.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jason Vargas earned his major league-leading 11th victory, pitching seven efficient innings to lead the surging Kansas City Royals over the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 Saturday. The Royals won for the 11th time in 13 games.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) —Michael Papierski homered from both sides of the plate and LSU beat the Oregon State 6-1 Saturday to reach the College World Series finals. Caleb Gilbert held the Number 1 national seed Beavers to two hits in seven and one third innings in Omaha. The Tigers beat the Beavers 3-1 on Friday to force the second game.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Alex Faedo pitched three-hit ball for seven and one third shutout innings in a second straight strong performance against TCU, and Florida moved to the College World Series finals with a 3-0 win Saturday night. Number 3 national seed Florida will play Number 4 seed LSU in the best-of-three finals beginning Monday night.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Rookie William Byron grabbed the lead with just over 20 laps and won the NASCAR Xfinity race at Iowa Speedway night for first series victory. A seven-time winner last year in the Truck Series, Byron, broke through just a week after an agonizingly close loss to Denny Hamlin at Michigan.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A California-based developer of a 12-story historic art deco building in downtown Sioux City has filed for bankruptcy protection, indefinitely delaying an effort by an eastern Iowa bank to foreclose on it. The Sioux City Journal reports that Mako One Corp., of Carlsbad, California, has notified the court that it’s filing a Chapter 11 petition in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of California. Cedar Rapids Bank and Trust filed for foreclosure on the Badgerow Building in April.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — University of Iowa leaders have announced a plan to set aside nearly $5 million next year for faculty pay raises. The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports the announcement comes as university officials figure out how to absorb a second year of cuts in state funding and are preparing for tuition increases. UI President Bruce Harreld has called for programs that would help raise the average of full-time, tenure-track faculty to 95 percent of the median of the university’s peer group.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A motorcyclist has died after a collision with a car in Sioux City. Police say the crash happened Friday afternoon at a city intersection when a car turned left in front of the motorcycle. Investigators say the 41-year-old motorcycle rider laid the bike down in an effort to avoid a crash, but hit the side of the car. The man was taken to a Sioux City hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

CHARLES CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Charles City man granted on a new sex abuse trial over concerns about his representing himself at trial plans to again serve as his own attorney. The Courier reports that 61-year-old Doug Lindaman revealed his plan in a court filing. But this time, he’s asked for a court-appointed attorney to assist him at his retrial, set for Aug. 1. The Iowa Supreme Court vacated his conviction in May because Lindaman was allowed to represent himself without knowingly waiving his right to an attorney.

Mercer, Harrison homer in Pittsburgh’s win over St. Louis

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jordy Mercer and Josh Harrison homered and starter Gerrit Cole pitched six innings, lifting the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 7-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night.

Cole (6-6) extended his winning streak to three games, allowing five hits and one run with five strikeouts and two walks. In Cole’s four losing starts from May 22 through June 8, he surrendered 23 runs in 19 1/3 innings. Since then, he has reeled off three solid starts. Before Saturday, he allowed just three hits and one run in seven innings in each of his previous two starts.

Pittsburgh has won four of its last six games. Slumping St. Louis has dropped eight of its last 11. The 33-40 start for the Cardinals is their worst since 2007.

Developer of Sioux City building files for bankruptcy

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A California-based developer of a 12-story historic art deco building in downtown Sioux City has filed for bankruptcy protection, indefinitely delaying an effort by an eastern Iowa bank to foreclose on it.

The Sioux City Journal reports that Mako One Corp., of Carlsbad, California, has notified the court that it’s filing a Chapter 11 petition in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of California.

In its petition, Mako lists nearly $1 million in unsecured creditors. Cedar Rapids Bank and Trust filed for foreclosure on the Badgerow Building in April, saying Mako, its managing partner Bruce DeBolt and two other limited liability companies defaulted on a $6 million bond agreement to help finance work to renovate the building. The bank said it was owed more than $4.4 million.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A motorcyclist has died after a collision with a car in Sioux City. Class 3A and 4A District baseball assignments released

The Iowa High School Athletic Association has released the District baseball assignments for Class 3A and 4A.

Atlantic has been placed in Class 3A District 15 with Glenwood, Creston, and Denison-Schleswig. The other side of their regional is district 15 which includes ADM, Carroll, Greene County, and Harlan.  Actual seedings and pairings will be announced at a later date.
