A traffic stop in the 1200 block of Highway 34 at around 3:40-a.m. today (Thursday), resulted in two men being arrested on drug charges. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports 20-year old Benjamin Parra Moreno, and 22-year old Edward Izell Davis, Jr., both of Lenox, were taken into custody. Moreno faces a Possession with the intent to deliver/marijuana charge. His bond was set at $5,000. Davis., Jr, was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance. His bond at the Montgomery County Jail was set at $1,000.
The Montgomery County K9 Unit assisted in the investigation and eventual arrests. During the course of the traffic stop, over 90-grams of suspected marijuana, and a .45-caliber handgun were seized.
It’s not golf weather in Iowa and most courses are closed for the season, but many lovers of the sport may already be thinking ahead to next spring and the Iowa P-G-A Golf Pass which went on sale this week. Thomas Hutton, executive director of the Iowa P-G-A, says the pass — which benefits the American Cancer Society — offers free or big discounts at many dozens of golf courses across Iowa and western Illinois during 2018. “It’s a great way for people that want to find a great deal and play a lot of different golf courses throughout the golf season,” Hutton says. “With over 250 facilities in it, we have golf courses in all parts of Iowa, so no matter where you live, you can definitely find a nice opportunity to play.”
By purchasing the golf pass, Hutton says Iowa golfers can potentially save thousands of dollars on green fees, cart rentals, range balls, merchandise, and golf lessons. “If you buy the book and use it one or two times, you get your money back,” Hutton says. “It’s a great value for the customer and it’s a great opportunity to play lots of golf.” Two versions of the pass are available, one that’s printed and another that you can access from your smartphone. “The hardcopy book is $45 and the electronic version is $40 but we are constantly running promotions for $10 off,” Hutton says. “Simply enter the code when you’re purchasing the book and you’ll get $10 off. The hardcopy’s $35 and the electronic copy goes down to $30.”
Fifteen-percent of every purchase goes to the American Cancer Society to help support the programs and services offered across Iowa, including rides to treatment, lodging when traveling for treatment and ongoing research. In the past five years, Hutton says Golf Pass sales have generated more than 85-thousand dollars for the charity.

CLARENCE E. BOSWELL, 92, of Cumberland, died Wed., Dec. 6th, at home. In an update to our report yesterday with regard to an ongoing burglary investigation in Fremont County. Sheriff Kevin Aistrope reports his Deputies arrested 32-year old Justin Michael Evans, of Randolph. The man was taken into custody in Hamburg, on a valid Fremont County warrant charging him with Conspiracy in connection with a Nov. 28th burglary incident in Farragut.
On Wednesday, Aistrope said 31-year old Marcus Washington, of Clarinda, 36-year old Alfred Mutchler, and 29-year old Mindy Irvin, both of Shenandoah, were taken into custody. Washington and Mutchler are being charged with Burglary in the 3rd Degree. Irvin was charged with Conspiracy. They were being held in the Fremont County Jail on $5,000 cash bonds, only.
Additional information is being gathered, and additional arrests are possible as the investigation continues. Shenandoah Police, as well as Sheriff’s Deputies in Montgomery and Page Counties are assisting in the ongoing investigation.
Some good news and a little bad news was announced during Wednesday’s City Council meeting in Atlantic, with regard to electric and water usage rates. Atlantic Municipal Utilities (AMU) General Manager Steve Tjekpes, told the Council the good news is that there will be no increase in electric rates for next year. The last increase was 3-percent, in Dec. 2015.
He said also, that a rate survey by the National Public Power Association, shows that out of the 183 electric utilities in Iowa, there are only seven communities with residential rates lower than Atlantic’s 8.6-cents per kilowatt hour. On the Commercial side, only six utilities have a lower rate, and for industrial-size utilities, only four utilities have a lower rate than Atlantic.
On the other side of the coin, the water rates will be going up by 3-percent. Tjepkes said a public hearing will be held during AMU’s next Board meeting, with the increase taking effect Feb. 1st. He says for the average residential customer, that amounts to an extra 70-cents per month, to as much as one-dollar. The increase is necessary, he says, to keep up with the cost of operating the utility.
The driver of a car that went out of control and rolled over in Mills County, Wednesday afternoon, was injured but refused transport to the hospital. The Iowa State Patrol reports 33-year old Jurkug Deng, of Omaha, was traveling north on Interstate 29 at around 4:37-p.m., when his 2005 Mazda went from the right to the left lane, in order to get around another vehicle.
The Mazda went out of control, left the road to the right and rolled into the east ditch before coming to rest on its top. Deng, who was wearing a seat belt, told authorities he had earlier changed a flat tire and was using the small spare to drive on, when the accident occurred.
He was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

(AP) — Triston Simpson matched his career high with 18 points, Trey Burch-Manning added 17 points and nine rebounds and South Dakota took over in the second half to defeat Drake 93-65. Tyler Hagedorn added 16 points and Matt Mooney added 14 for the Coyotes (8-3), who outscored the Bulldogs (4-4) by 24 in the second half.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have suspended Marcus Peters for Sunday’s game against Oakland after the volatile young cornerback’s embarrassing tantrum during a last-minute loss to the Jets last weekend. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Peters would not practice with the team as it prepares to face the Raiders in a crucial showdown between teams tied atop the AFC West.
UNDATED (AP) — Hall of Fame quarterback Warren Moon has been accused of sexual harassment by an assistant for his sports marketing firm, according to a lawsuit filed in California. The civil lawsuit was filed in Orange County Superior Court. According to court documents, Wendy Haskell alleges Moon made “unwanted and unsolicited” sexual advances as part of her role as Moon’s assistant working for Sports 1 Marketing
