Drake Wins Kilimanjaro Bowl

Sports

May 21st, 2011 by Jim Field

The Drake Bulldogs and a Mexican All-Star team made history early Saturday morning by playing the first college football game in Africa.  The Bulldogs beat CONADEIP All-Stars, a collection of top college players from Mexico, 17-7 in the Global Kilimanjaro Bowl in front of an estimated crowd of about 12,000 in Arusha, Tanzania.  The exhibition is part of a two-week trip organized by Drake that includes youth clinics, a safari, an orphanage project and a five-day climb to the summit of the 19,340-foot Mount Kilimanjaro.  The trip grew out of a vision by Drake Coach Chris Creighton and took more than a year of planning by Global Football.  The company has been taking US college football teams around the world for 14 years.  Creighton told the Associated Press that the event made for a magical day.  Former Griswold prep Tyler Mosier is a defensive back for Drake.

IGHSAU Adds More Classes

Sports

May 21st, 2011 by Jim Field

The Board of Directors of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union voted unanimously today to expand to five classes in the sports of basketball, golf, softball, and volleyball beginning with the 2012 softball season.  The largest class, 5A, will be composed of the 40 largest schools in the state in terms of enrollment.  Class 4A will be comprised of the next 48 schools, 3A the next 64, 2A the next 96, and the remaining schools will be classified 1A.

The move comes after a year of study by IGHSAU staff and after recommendations to move to five classes by the IGHSAU Representative Council and the basketball, softball, and volleyball advisory committees, which are comprised of school administrators, coaches, and officials from around the state.

“We asked each group to approach the topic with the goals of ensuring that our classification system was fair and that it balanced the number of schools per class and the enrollment range per class, IGHSAU assistant director Joel Oswald said.  We also wanted to be sure we were not placing unreasonable demands on schools and students regarding travel, loss of school time, or putting any schools at a distinct competitive disadvantage.

The new classification structure allows for an approximate 2:1 enrollment ratio in each class, except for the smallest of 1A schools.  It also ensures that no team would have to play more than four regional games to qualify for the state tournament.

State tournament dates will remain unchanged in the four sports.  More games will be played on the current dates.

The most important thing is that eight more teams and communities have the opportunity to reap the positive life experiences and prestige of qualifying for the state tournament, said IGHSAU executive director Mike Dick.

Several Denison High School seniors will graduate on Sunday as planned, despite being ticketed Tuesday night for allegedly consuming alcohol at a farm in rural Crawford County. The Sheriff’s Department said Friday deputies cited 33 people on suspicion of being Minors in Possession of Alcohol. In all, about 40 people, including some adults attended the party, following the last day of classes for the graduating Seniors. Sheriff James Steinkuehler says his office received an anonymous call late Tuesday night, about an underage party at a farm northwest of Denison.

Denison Community Schools Superintendent Mike Pardun said a number of those ticketed were graduating seniors, but would not say how many. Not all those who were ticketed were seniors. Pardun said since the party “Has nothing to do with their diplomas,” the seniors will be allowed to graduate, but those students who are still in school and participating in extracurricular activities could face sanctions, the punishment for which would vary, depending on what activities a student is involved in and if they have been cited before.

For those not involved in extracurricular activities, Pardun said, it was mostly an issue between the student and the legal system. Sheriff Steinkuehler said authorities are still looking at, among other things, which adults may have facilitated the party.

Graduation in Denison is scheduled for Sunday, at the high school gymnasium.

Property owners and residents in 7 Counties asked to search for Missing Carroll woman

Dawn Allen - Missing since May 4th, 2011

Carroll Police Chief Jeff Caylor said today (Friday), while there are no new leads in the disappearance of Carroll resident Dawn Allen, individuals from seven counties, representing law enforcement, county conservation, fire departments, as well as representatives of the Iowa Department of Transportation and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation continue to work together to try and find the woman.

Caylor says a briefing was held this (Friday) morning to discuss various search strategies in locating Allen, who has been missing since May 4th. The last person known to have had any communication with her, 54-year old James Snovelle, committed suicide May 9th in Kansas, as authorities closed in on him. Snovelle was not a suspect in her disappearance, but he was wanted for questioning. His death left authorities with more questions than answers.

In addition to the efforts of some specific agencies, Caylor says assistance will also be sought from fire departments, first responders and other volunteers within their jurisdictions.  The Carroll Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is also requesting the continued cooperation and assistance from the general public throughout the western half of the state, but especially within the following jurisdictions:

Carroll County
Sac County
Greene County
Guthrie County
Calhoun County
Pocahontas County
Palo Alto County

Law enforcement is requesting that individuals check out buildings, ditches, waterways, wooded areas and any other areas on their property and/or any other public access areas where someone may have hidden or disposed of evidence involving this missing person case.

Anyone finding such evidence or who may have other information about this case should contact their local law enforcement agency, or may also contact the Carroll Police Department 712-792-3536.

Noise complaint leads to nine drug-related arrests in Red Oak

News

May 20th, 2011 by Ric Hanson

A complaint about noise from a residence in Red Oak early this (Friday) morning, led to the arrest on nine people on drug charges. Red Oak Police report when officers went to speak with the owner of the residence where the noise allegedly came from, a strong smell of marijuana wafted through the air when the front door was opened.
The smell gave authorities probable cause to search the home, and when a search warrant was executed, 40-grams of what a substance suspected to be methamphetamine, as well as a small amount of marijuana, were confiscated as evidence.
Taken into custody on charges of Gathering where a Controlled Substance is used, possessed and/or sponsored, were the following individuals: 31-year-old Peggy Sue Gurney, 26-year-old Natosha Myree Cralley, 23-year-old Amber Rose Pearson, 22-year-old James Dean Inman, and 28-year-old Bradley Edward Williams, all of Red Oak.
Red Oak Police also arrested 20-year-old Michelle Lynn Kaska of Lyman, 41-year-old Dennis Lee Binns of Imogene, and 28-year-old George Allen Westbrook of Villisca.
32-year-old Jonathon Wayne Ray, of Red Oak, was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance, 2nd offense, as well as G-C-S, a drug tax stamp violation, and possession with intent to deliver over five grams.

All 9 suspects were brought to the Montgomery County Jail, where, with the exception of Ray, were being held on $5,000 bond each. Authorities say Ray was being held on $100,000 bond.
