DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A Muscatine doctor accused of prescribing drugs in exchange for sex faces more federal charges. David Gierlus has pleaded not guilty to 95 individual drug charges. Gierlus was previously charged with several counts of distributing certain controlled substances. His trial is planned for April.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Workers’ Compensation commissioner has filed a federal lawsuit accusing the governor, lieutenant governor and members of the governor’s staff of discriminating against him for political reasons and because he’s gay. Christopher Godfrey claims Governor Terry Branstad and some of his staff violated his rights by cutting his salary and trying to push him out of his job.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — State budget director Dave Roederer has been released from a Des Moines hospital where he was taken for complications from a kidney stone. An aide to Governor Terry Branstad says Roederer was taken to the hospital yesterday morning after feeling weak, lying on his Capitol office floor and apparently fainting.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Some of Iowa’s Senate Democrats are proposing making medical marijuana legal for critically ill people to use. One of the bill’s sponsors, Senator Jack Hatch, says the legislation would help those with chronic pain. He acknowledges the bill has little chance of becoming law because of opposition by Republican lawmakers.
