A single-vehicle rollover accident has both eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 blocked just east the Avoca exit. Traffic was being rerouted off the interstate at Avoca..east to Walnut and back north to I80. The accident resulted in one person being ejected. Emergency crews and law enforcement were on the scene shortly after the crash was reported at around 9:30 pm. Additional information will be released later.
The website 2015 Niche Ranking has released it’s list of theBest Public High Schools across the country. Niche ranked 14,431 high schools from across the nation, based on dozens of key statistics and 4.6 million opinions from 280,000 students and parents. A high ranking indicates that the school is an exceptional academic institution with a diverse set of high-achieving students who rate their experience very highly. In Iowa, the Corning High School ranked in the top five.
An additional 834 schools received a grade but were not eligible for ranking. The list includes magnet, charter, and online schools. In Iowa, West Senior High School in Iowa City was ranked number one on the list, followed by Ames High School in second place. Waukee Senior High School placed third, Corning fourth, and Iowa City High, fifth.
Elsewhere in southwest Iowa, Treynor Middle School/High School placed 33rd in the survey, West Harrison 38th, Carroll High came in at number 49, Tri-Center was 57th, Guthrie Center was three-quarters of the way down the list at number 75. And coming in at number 81 was West Central Valley/Stuart.

BETTY E. GAUL, 89, of Earling died Friday, December 26, 2014 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. A Mass of Christian Burial for BETTY E. GAUL will be held Wednesday, December 31st at 10:30am at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Earling. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 from 12:00pm-9:00pm at the funeral home with a Rosary Service led by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas at 7:00pm.
Burial will be in the St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Earling.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Nate Buss scored 14 points off the bench and 23rd-ranked Northern Iowa closed out non-conference play with a 74-63 win over South Dakota State on Sunday. Wes Washpun had 12 points and Seth Tuttle scored 11 for the Panthers (11-1), which got 45 points from its reserves.
Northern Iowa took control with a 13-0 run late in the first half. The Panthers let the Jackrabbits close to within five with 6:11 left before putting them away late to improve to 6-0 at home. George Marshall had 16 to lead South Dakota State (9-5), which dropped its second straight game against a Top 25 opponent. The Jackrabbits were beaten by No. 14 Utah 80-66 on Tuesday.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Bethany Doolittle had 12 points, 11 rebounds and six blocks, and No. 23 Iowa beat Penn State 77-52 on Sunday in the Big Ten opener for both teams. Melissa Dixon was 5 of 12 from 3-point range and led the Hawkeyes (10-2) with 21 points. Ally Disterhoft, Whitney Jennings and Christina Buttenham each added 11 points. Jennings also had eight assists.
Lindsey Spann had 22 points, five rebounds and four assists for Penn State (3-9). Alex Harris grabbed 10 rebounds. Iowa scored the first nine points and opened the game on a 16-1 run, but Spann’s 3-pointer brought Penn State within 20-16.
The Hawkeyes took control back with a 13-2 run to go ahead 33-18 with 4:54 left in the half and started another 13-2 run in the final minute that stretched into the second half to lead 50-26.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Gardeners at hundreds of spots around the country are sharing seeds as part of an increasing interest in locally grown food, but some agriculture officials say the well-meaning effort violates state laws. In spots like Duluth, Minnesota, the conflict has surprised gardeners and library officials who never thought to examine the intricacies of state seed laws.
Agriculture officials say they weren’t looking for a fight but must enforce laws that are intended to protect farmers by ensuring seeds are viable, will grow the intended plant and aren’t mixed with unwanted seeds for weeds or plants.
Advocates of seed-sharing programs said they don’t necessarily blame agriculture departments, but some express frustration that laws focus on the needs of modern hybrid seed producers while limiting age-old, person-to-person seed exchanges.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs beat San Diego 19-7 on Sunday to eliminate the Chargers from playoff contention, moments before they were eliminated themselves by games happening elsewhere. The Chiefs needed Cleveland to beat Baltimore and Jacksonville to beat Houston, and neither of those outcomes transpired. The Ravens wound up with the AFC’s final playoff spot. San Diego (9-7) needed merely to beat Kansas City (9-7) to reach the postseason.
Chiefs linebacker Justin Houston piled up four sacks to finish with 22 on the season, breaking Derrick Thomas’s franchise record, and Cairo Santos had four field goals. The Chargers’ Philip Rivers threw for 291 yards, but was picked off twice. Branden Oliver ran for 71 yards and a touchdown.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Data shows the number of Iowa school buses flagged for repeated safety citations has nearly doubled since 2012. The Des Moines Register reports nearly 22,000 bus inspection citations have been issued since June 2012. They include unsafe tires, inoperable warning signals or strobe lights and dysfunctional wheel bearings.
The newspaper says most affected school districts have notified state officials that the buses were repaired before they were returned to service. But the state’s education department has sent letters to three districts this year over safety concerns.
The letters accuse the districts of falsifying some repair records. Representatives for two of the districts say some of the issues weren’t necessarily related to the same problem. One district official said a private company is now conducting its bus service.
The Cass County Health System’s Foundation has begun its annual fundraising drive. CCHS Foundation President Kent Gade said the goal of their 2015 campaign, is to raise $100,000 toward the cost of a state-of-the-art, high-tech Central Monitoring System (CMS) for the Cass County Memorial Hospital’s Obstetrics (OB) Department.
The system is designed to work with the fetal monitors purchased from last year’s Foundation campaign. Together, the two systems use electronic fetal monitoring to create a powerful tool to monitor and protect infants.
