Pitching-depleted Rangers get lefty Freeman from Cardinals

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) – The pitching-depleted Texas Rangers acquired left-hander Sam Freeman from the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday for a player to be named or cash considerations. The 27-year-old Freeman was 2-0 with a 2.61 ERA in a career-high 44 relief appearances last season with the Cardinals. He pitched once against the Dodgers in the playoffs.

Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said he expects Freeman, who is out of minor league options, to make the opening day roster. “He’s got a good arm and the acquisition price was right,” Daniels said. “We’ll bring him in here and give him an opportunity.” The Texas pitching staff has been beset by health problems in spring training, including a season-ending injury to ace Yu Darvish.

Judge to review suspect statements to police before trial

News

March 28th, 2015 by admin

LE MARS, Iowa (AP) – A judge will review video and a transcript of a homicide suspect’s interview with investigators to determine if his statements to police can be used as evidence at his upcoming trial. The Sioux City Journal reports that Plymouth County Attorney Darin Raymond submitted the copies during a 10-minute hearing Friday. He argues that Jonathan Neunaber’s statements are admissible evidence.

Neunaber, of Akron, Iowa, is charged with first-degree murder in the July beating death of his 80-year-old mother, Esther Neunaber. Neunaber’s attorney, public defender Billy Oyadare, is seeking to suppress Neunaber’s statements, saying Neunaber was never given the opportunity to have an attorney present and that an investigator continued to question him after he invoked his right to remain silent.
