The Iowa Hawkeye baseball team is 6-0 in the Big Ten for the first time. The Hawkeyes had nine hits and used a strong outing from starting pitcher Calvin Mathews to complete a three game sweep of Purdue on the road with a 4-1 victory.
Iowa coach Rick Heller says the Hawkeyes won despite struggling to string hits together. The Hawkeyes return to action Wednesday night at home against Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

CHICAGO (AP) — A University of Iowa student from suburban Chicago has died after being seriously injured earlier this year while studying abroad. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said 20-year-old Andrew Mogni died Sunday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The university announced earlier this year he’d been hurt in a fall on January 14, shortly after arriving in Rome.
Medical Examiner’s Office spokesman Frank Shuftan says a cause of death won’t be released until Monday at the earliest. Mogni was a third-year finance major from Glen Ellyn, Illinois, who was participating in a semester-long program at John Cabot University.
The university said initial police reports indicated the fall was an accident but authorities were investigating the possibility that Mogni was robbed. The school said Mogni was treated in Rome until late March, when he was flown back to Illinois.
CHICAGO (AP) — Adam Wainwright pitched six innings of five-hit ball and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 3-0 on Sunday night in the major leagues opener. Jason Heyward had three hits in his St. Louis debut and Matt Holliday drove in two runs as the Cardinals won their first game for the second straight year. Throw in Matt Carpenter’s two hits at new-look Wrigley Field, and the top third of the lineup for the NL Central champs went 7 for 14 with three RBIs.
Playing their most anticipated opener in years, manager Joe Maddon’s Cubs went 0 for 13 with runners in scoring position. Ace left-hander Jon Lester was pulled with one out in the fifth inning in his Cubs’ debut.
A Council Bluffs man was in critical condition after a fire Saturday night that was considered suspicious by authorities. According to the Daily NonPareil, crews responded just after 11:15-p.m., to a garage fire at 1209 Fourth Avenue. Authorities say a roommate pulled 55-year-old Clinton Edie from the smoke-filled structure.
Firefighters were able to quickly put out the blaze in the detached garage. Council Bluffs Rescue transported Edie to CHI Health Mercy Hospital for treatment of significant smoke inhalation, where he was listed in critical condition at last report.
The garage sustained extensive damage. Officials said a preliminary investigation showed signs of a suspicious fire. The incident remains under investigation.
INGE ANNA MURRAY, 89, of Harlan, died Sat., April 4th, at home. Funeral services for INGE MURRAY will be held 11-a.m. Wed., April 8th, at the Pauley-Jones Funeral Home, in Harlan.
Visitation at the funeral home is from 2-until 8-pm on Tue., April 7th, with the family greeting friends from 6-until 8-pm
Burial will be in the Harlan Cemetery.

Visitation with her family is from 5-until 7-pm Wednesday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Walnut, with a Rosary at 7-p.m.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Cary Gordon isn’t a political operative, a top dollar donor or an elected official. But Jeb Bush’s team already has reached as the 2016 Republican presidential campaign heats up in Iowa. Gordon is a well-known evangelical Christian pastor with a church in Sioux City that can draw 600 people on Sundays.
When it comes to the Iowa Republican caucuses, evangelical pastors are kingmakers, with sway over a key bloc of participants. Lots of potential 2016 candidates are stepping up the courting. Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul have appeared before groups of religious conservatives. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker talks frequently about being a pastor’s son.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, whose father is a pastor, and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal recently addressed pastors in Des Moines.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Wisconsin Badgers have moved into the NCAA title game for the first time since 1941 by handing Kentucky its only loss of the season, 71-64 at Indianapolis. AP Player of the Year Frank Kaminsky scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Wisconsin, who were tied at 60 before closing on an 11-4 run in the final 1:42. Kentucky was trying to become the first unbeaten NCAA champion since Indiana in 1976.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Duke is back in the NCAA title game after freshmen Justice Winslow and Jahlil Okafor combined for almost half of the Blue Devils’ points in an 81-61 rout of Michigan State. Winslow got off to a poor start before finishing with a team-high 19 points, one more than Okafor. Senior Quinn Cook had 17 points for the Blue Devils, who shot 51 percent and dominated the game after falling behind 14-6.
CLEVELAND (AP) — A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that AL Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber and the Cleveland Indians have agreed to a five-year contract. The deal includes two club options and is contingent upon him passing medical tests, which should be concluded within the next few days. Kluber went 18-9 with a 2.44 ERA last season, his first full year in the majors.
HOUSTON (AP) — Jordan Speith has the lead after three rounds of the PGA’s Houston Open. He shot a third round 5-under-67 to stand 14-under par, one shot in front of three players, Scott Piercy, Johnson Wagner and Austin Cook. Phil Mickelson entered the round one stroke back before carding a 75 that puts him six off the pace.
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (AP) — Sei Young Kim carded a pair of late birdies to take a three-stroke lead over Stacy Lewis through three rounds of the ANA Inspiration, the first LPGA major of the year. She holed a downhill 18-footer from the fringe on the par-4 16th and made a 10-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th to take command. Kim is 10-under following a 3-under 69.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Police say a man has reported being shot in the back while stopped at a Des Moines intersection. The Register reports that the shooting happened just after 12 a.m. Friday. Officers were called to the Iowa Lutheran Hospital for a report of a shooting victim who was brought in by a private vehicle. The 25-year-old man was later taken to Iowa Methodist Medical Center with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Sioux City specialty plant that processes ribs and other pre-cooked meats is planning a $9 million expansion that will bring 30 new jobs with it. The Journal reports that Curly’s Foods, owned by Smithfield Foods, credits a boost in sales and demand for pre-cooked meats at national franchise restaurants. The City Council is slated on Monday to approve a state tax incentive application for Smithfield Fields.
SHELDON, Iowa (AP) — Ag Partners feed mill plant in northwest Iowa is planning an expansion with $7.2 million in improvements to increase the plant’s ability to make livestock feed. The Sioux City Journal reports that Ag Partners officials announced the expansion on Thursday. Officials say construction will begin immediately and is expected to be complete in 2016.
MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — Motorists in Mason City could soon have their vehicles impounded for any one of 10 violations, including some misdemeanors. The Globe Gazette reports that the City Council will consider an impound ordinance at its meeting Tuesday night.
