April 30th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Peter Bourjos hit a game-tying RBI triple, then scored the go-ahead run by beating the throw home on an infield tapper to fuel a four-run fifth inning in the St. Louis Cardinals’ 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night. Carlos Martinez (3-0) allowed two runs in six innings and Matt Adams doubled twice with an RBI.

Ryan Howard hit his 20th career homer against St. Louis, 11 coming in his hometown, and Odubel Herrera had two hits and an RBI. Aaron Harang (2-2) surrendered five runs in six innings, ending a career-best run of eight consecutive quality starts dating to last September. Bourjos entered 7 for 15 against Harang with a homer and four RBIs, no doubt factoring into his second start considering he was just 1 for 10 on the season.

Local nonprofit disputes St. Louis Cardinals lawsuit

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The president of a youth baseball charity being sued by the St. Louis Cardinals over alleged scalped tickets says it has used funds properly. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Nicholas Mahrt, president of the Lewis & Clark Baseball League disputed the baseball team’s allegations Tuesday, stating money involved in the ticket transactions was used for charity. Last week, the team filed a lawsuit against the nonprofit accusing it of breaching a contract and committing fraud by selling hundreds of tickets over face value.

The Leagues of Extraordinary Gentlemen, which runs the charity, last year was allotted 3,500 tickets at a discounted price through the team’s Cardinals Care program. The suit claims the charity sold tickets for high-demand games online, instead of selling them for up to face value in fundraisers to support youth baseball.

The lawsuit seeks to recover $40,475 in profits.

(4:40-p.m. 4/29) UPDATE ON POLLUTION RELEASES NEAR RED OAK

Ag/Outdoor, News

April 29th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Officials with the Iowa Dept. of Natural Resources said late this (Wednesday) afternoon, that they have traced ammonia found in a culvert near Red Oak to a hog confinement on the southwest corner of town. On Tuesday, the DNR responded to a report from Hog Haven, owned by Lindoah, LLC, that a broken pipe leaked drinking water into a manure pit under the building. The excess water caused the pit to overflow.

Today (Wednesday), the DNR confirmed that ammonia found in a culvert Tuesday came from the hog confinement. An unknown amount of contaminated water flowed into a road ditch and eventually to the culvert and a tributary of the East Nishnabotna River.

In another incident Tuesday, the DNR investigated a release from Nachurs, a fertilizer company in Red Oak. The release occurred when the company pumped water from a storm water basin into a drainage ditch. The company reported the release once they realized the water was contaminated.

Both releases have been contained. The DNR checked the river below Red Oak Wednesday and found no sign of an extensive fish kill. However, they did find six dead minnows below Nachurs. Field test results from Tuesday and Wednesday showed no further sign of contamination in the river. However, residents should keep children and pets out of the creek between Nachurs and the Nishnabotna River until 48 hours after cleanup is complete.

The DNR is working with both companies and Montgomery County Emergency  Management to ensure proper cleanup.

Pork tenderloin contest kicks off Friday

News

April 29th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Entries for Iowa’s Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin will be accepted starting this Friday. Kelsey Sutter, spokeswoman for the Iowa Pork Producers Association, says it’s a hotly-contested title for a much-loved sandwich in the nation’s number-one pork producing state. “Really, breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches are just a staple, a Midwest favorite, and we’re simply on the search for the best one in the state,” Sutter says. “If you have one in your community that you think is fantastic and goes above and beyond, we’d love to know about it.”

Last year, a record 98 sandwiches were judged in the contest with nearly two-thousand nominations received. Last year’s winning tenderloin was from The Lucky Pig Pub and Grill in Ogden. Sutter says there will be a change in this year’s judging process so it’s assured the finalists come from all over the state. “We’re going to take the top five that are nominated in each of our eight districts,” she says. “Iowa Pork Producers has eight districts across the state, so we’re going to judge 40 sandwiches this year, the top five from each district.”

This is the 13th year for the contest. It’s open to any cafe, restaurant or tavern that serves hand-breaded or battered pork tenderloins on its core menu. The deadline for nominations is June 8th. The winner will be announced in October. For more details, visit: www.iowapork.org.

Hawkeye baseball team wins in 18 innings

Sports

April 29th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

The 15th ranked Iowa baseball team won another extra-innings game Tuesday, this time downing Sacramento State 4-3 in 18 innings. The Hawkeyes used extra innings to win one of their games in a three-game weekend sweep over Nebraska. Rick Heller’s team has put in a lot of work in a short amount of time after weather forced them to play a single game Saturday and a double-header with the Huskers Sunday.

“It’s tough to deal with in the early part of the weekend and obviously that’s always a stressful situation when you are the home team trying to make those tough decision on when to play,” Heller says. “And ending up having to play three nine-inning games in a 24-hour period is never easy, and for our guys to find way to beat Nebraska three times and not have a let down in any of those games says a lot about our team.” Heller says they were expecting to get back to normal with the single game Tuesday.

“Thinking you are going to have a nice single game on a beautiful night against Sacramento State turns into 18 innings and a lot of stressful innings during that one. But that one was extras special to be able to win that, if you play 18 innings, you certainly don’t want to lose it,” Heller says. Iowa had to come back a couple of times to win the game.

“If you keep playing the game, the game usually comes back to you in some way. When you just give up and let down is when you are beat, and this team just doesn’t give up,” Heller says. “It isn’t just recently that that’s been happening. We had some games early in the season where we hung around and came back and won, and I think that’s important in your first 10-15 games to win some games like that.” Iowa has had some injuries to key players, but also has had some come back and start to round into form, such as junior Jimmy Frankos.

“He’s just now three-quarters of the way into the season back into shape where he is turning into his old self. It was nice to have Jimmy swinging the bat well against Nebraska and he ended up being the co-conference player of the week. Getting some added punch from him has really helped,” Heller says. “Dan Potempa has had a good stretch — same thing with him –he got off to a slow start. He was an all-Big Ten D-H last season. Dan is really starting to swing the bat a lot better.” The extra-inning win moves the Hawkeyes to 31-11 overall. They return to conference action Friday afternoon with the start of a three-game series at Michigan.
