Cards again beat Pirates 2-1 in extras, win in 11th Saturday

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Matt Carpenter hit a sacrifice fly in the 11th inning Saturday and the St. Louis Cardinals once again beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 in extras. The Cardinals have won five in a row. They defeated the Pirates 2-1 Friday night on Matt Adams’ single in the 10th. They’ll close out their series with the Pirates today (Sunday). You can hear the action beginning at 12:20-p.m., on KJAN.

Pittsburgh left a season-high 18 runners on base, Saturday, and the Cardinals stranded just four. St. Louis has won 15 of its last 18 against the Pirates at Busch Stadium. Peter Bourjos doubled in the St. Louis 11th. He was trapped off second by Jared Hughes (0-1) and caught stealing third. Pete Kozma and Jon Jay singled and Carpenter hit a deep fly to left that easily scored the winning run. Carlos Villanueva (3-1), the seventh St. Louis pitcher, went one inning.

GERALD “BUD” E. SOPER, 82, of Adair, died Sat., May 2nd, at Caring Acres Nursing & Rehab Center, in Anita. Funeral services for “BUD” SOPER will be held Thursday, May 7th at 10:30am in the First Presbyterian Church in Adair. Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Home in Adair has the arrangements.

Visitation with the family will be on Wednesday, May 6th from 5:00pm-7:00pm at the funeral home in Adair.

Burial will be in the Sunnyhill Cemetery in Adair.

GERALD “BUD” SOPER is survived by:

Wife: Donna of Adair.

Son: Roger (Jan) Soper of Latta, SC.

Daughter: Gwen (Chris) Ullerich of Wiota.

Sister: Shirley (Delbert) Hughes of Panora.

Chiefs welcome first-round pick Peters on draft’s last day

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – The Kansas City Chiefs addressed just about all their needs by the end of the NFL draft. With five picks on Saturday, the Chiefs plucked Ramik Wilson out of Georgia in the fourth round and then added fellow linebacker D.J. Alexander out of Oregon State in the fifth round. Linebacker was one of their glaring holes after the first two days of the draft.

Kansas City also added depth with Illinois State tight end James O’Shaughnessy in the fifth, defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches from Southern Miss in the sixth, and Northern Illinois wide receiver Da’Ron Brown in the seventh round.

Earlier Saturday, the Chiefs introduced first-round pick Marcus Peters at their practice facility. The former Washington cornerback was picked No. 18 overall on Thursday night.

Sioux City picked to try out new traffic safety campaign

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – Sioux City will try out a new Iowa traffic safety campaign before the program is rolled out through the rest of the state. The Sioux City Journal reports that the goal is to reduce the number of pedestrian injuries and fatalities in Iowa through enforcement, education, and street engineer work. The program is a partnership between the Sioux City Police Department, Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Bureau chief Pat Hoye says the results in Sioux City will determine where the program is implemented next. Police Chief Doug Young says Sioux City was picked because of its high number of pedestrian-related traffic accidents – 132 from 2009 to 2013, including eight pedestrian deaths.

Glenwood man injured in Montgomery County crash

Two people were injured during a crash Saturday afternoon in Montgomery County. Sheriff’s officials say 72-year old Steven Harshaw, of Glenwood, was transported by helicopter from the scene of the crash at Chestnut Street and Highway 48 in Elliott, to a hospital in Omaha. A report on his condition is not available. The driver of the other vehicle, 25-year old Alexandria Strauss, of Elliott, refused treatment at the scene.

Authorities say a 2005 Ford Explorer driven by Strauss was traveling east on Highway 48 at around 1:45-p.m., when she slowed to turn left onto Chestnut Street. In doing so, she failed to she an approaching 2002 Kia driven by Harshaw, and pulled into the path of the car, causing the collision.

Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputies were assisted at the scene by personnel from the Elliott Fire Dept., Elliott 1st Responders, Red Oak Rescue, and the Red Oak Fire Department.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, from 5-until 8-p.m.

Burial will be in the Valley View Cemetery at Persia.
