New hybrid grapes help grow wine industry in cold US regions

Ag/Outdoor

June 7th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

CORINTH, N.Y. (AP) — A host of new grape varieties have enabled a boutique wine industry to take root in areas of the country that were previously inhospitable. One of them is Marquette, a red grape released for production by the University of Minnesota in 2006. It’s now growing in vineyards in the upper Hudson Valley and southeastern Adirondacks, where new wineries like Ledge Rock Hill are producing award-winning wines.

Another success story is the white grape Traminette out of Cornell University. Wine made from the Traminette grape has been adopted as the “signature wine” of Indiana. Cornell researcher Bruce Reisch says new varieties have spurred tremendous growth in the wine industry in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois and Ohio as well as northern New York.

Data shows abortion rate in Iowa is declining

News

June 7th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Data shows the number of abortions performed annually in Iowa is declining. Between 2010 and 2013, the number of abortions decreased from nearly 5,400 to just over 4,420. That represents an 18.1 percent drop.

The Associated Press compiled the data based on information from the Iowa Department of Public Health. Data on abortion rates was collected from health departments in 45 U.S. states that keep such information on a comprehensive basis. It shows the annual number of abortions has declined substantially since 2010 in most states.

Penny Dickey with Planned Parenthood of the Heartland in Iowa says the decline is linked to better access to family planning services like contraception. Jenifer Bowen with Iowa Right to Life argues more pregnancy centers in Iowa are offering counseling services to women.

Calcavecchia had a 9-under 135 total at Wakonda Club. The 54-year-old Calcavecchia has two victories on the 50-and-over tour after winning 13 times on the PGA Tour, including the 1989 British Open.

Joe Durant was second after a 68. Paul Goydos, Brian Henninger and Michael Allen were tied for third at 7 under, all shooting 70. Calcavecchia has struggled most of the year following offseason surgery on his right hand. But he birdied the last two holes Saturday to grab the lead from Durant.
