Investigators haven’t determined cause of explosion, fire at Shell Rock ethanol plant

(Radio Iowa) – Investigators have not yet determined the cause of a Saturday afternoon explosion and fire at the Poet ethanol plant in Shell Rock. There were no injuries. Witnesses reported seeing a fireball at that time and felt the explosion for a radius of several miles around the plant. Butler County Emergency Management reports that by the time emergency crews arrived on the scene, the fire had taken care of itself.

The cause is under investigation, but one possibility was a combustible dust explosion. The plant is running and is stable.

Malvern man arrested Sunday afternoon on an Assault charge

(Glenwood, Iowa) – The Mills County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest Sunday afternoon, of a man on an Assault charge. 54-year-old Patrick Lee Miller, of Malvern, was taken into custody at around 3:36-p.m. at a location on Wilson Avenue. He was transported to the Mills County Jail and charged with Simple Assault. Miller was being held without bond, pending a court appearance.

The Sheriff’s Office says also, a resident of Virginia Beach, VA, reported Friday morning, an incident of Theft in the 2nd Degree in the vicinity of Noyes Avenue, in Mills County. Additional details were not provided.

Teen dies from injuries in a Webster County crash last week (Delayed report)

(Rural Badger, Iowa) – The Iowa State Patrol has released information with regard to a fatal accident that occurred last week, in Webster County. Authorities say a 2014 RAM pickup driven by 37-year-old Logan Christensen, of Eagle Grove, was westbound on 110th Street northeast of Badger at around 3:42-p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 22nd), at the same time a 2014 Toyota sedan driven by 33-year-old Sara Sanga, of Hardy (IA) was traveling northbound on Union Avenue.

When Christensen failed to stop at the posted intersection, his pickup hit the car. Both vehicles came to rest in a ditch northwest of the intersection. A passenger in Toyota, 13-year Kyle Hilbert, of Hardy, died from his injuries. Sara Sanga and Logan Christensen were injured in the crash. Sanga was transported by LifeFlight to Methodist Hospital in Des Moines.  Christensen was transported to Trinity Hospital by Ft. Dodge EMS. All of the crash victims were wearing their seat belts.

Kyle Hilbert was a seventh-grade student at the Humboldt Middle School. Humboldt Community School District Superintendent Jim Murray said multiple counselors were expected to be available to students and staff today (Monday), at the middle school.

The Iowa State Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Webster County Sheriff’s Dept., Webster County EMS and Medical Examiner, along with the Thor and Badger Fire Departments.

(Atlantic, Iowa) – The annual Lighted Parade will fill downtown Atlantic with holiday cheer this Saturday, December 2nd, starting at 6-p.m.  Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bailey Smith says “The Fireworks and Lighted Parade is a holiday tradition that Atlantic families look forward to every year. It’s always fun to see how creative people get with their light displays each year.”

Each float will have a holiday theme, lighting and music. Awards will be given for: Best Overall, Best Holiday Spirit and Twinkle Twinkle award. Winners will be notified before the parade. Fireworks will kick off the Christmas magic over the Rock Island Depot, starting at 6 PM. The Lighted Parade & Fireworks are sponsored by A.M. Cohron & Son, McDermott & Son Roofing and Rush, CPA & Associates.

Before the parade, Santa will be in his Cabin at City Park from 3 PM – 5:30 PM. Free Carriage Rides, presented by Lloyd & Meredith, will also be at City Park from 3 PM – 5:30 PM. Cyclones Claim Fourth Place at ESPN Events Invitational

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Iowa State (5-2, 0-0 Big 12) dropped its second game in a row on Sunday night, falling to No. 12 Texas A&M (6-1, 0-0 SEC) in the third-place game of the ESPN Events Invitational by a score of 73-69.

After leading by as many as 21 points in the first half, uncharacteristic turnovers and a poor shooting performance allowed the Aggies to sneak back in the game before they ultimately wrestled away control in the second half.

Iowa State claimed fourth place in the Thanksgiving MTE, marking three top-four finishes across the past three seasons under T.J. Otzelberger (first place in 2021 NIT Tip-Off, second place in 2022 Phil Knight Invitational).

The Cyclones had four players score in double figures on the day, as freshman Milan Momcilovic led the way with 15 points, knocking down four 3-pointers. Keshon Gilbert had 14 points to go along with a season-high seven assists, knocking down a pair of triples and going 4-4 from the charity stripe. Tamin Lipsey and Curtis Jones rounded out the double-figure scorers, with Lipsey earning his second career double-double as he tallied 10 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.

The Aggies had just two in double figures, as SEC Preseason Player of the Year Wade Baldwin IV was held in check for the most part by ISU, scoring 14 points on 5-15 shooting from the floor. Baldwin IV was forced into turning the ball over eight times. Solomon Washington led the way for TAMU, scoring 18 on 66.7 percent shooting with six boards.

How It Happened

Iowa State played its best basketball of the tournament in the first half, jumping on the former Big 12 foe early, holding a 12-point lead at the under-eight media timeout. A Momcilovic jumper and 3-pointer would extend the Cyclone lead to 17 with 5:38 remaining.

Back-to-back baskets from Jones pushed the ISU lead to its largest of the game – 21 – at the 2:44 mark as Iowa State held a 35-14 advantage.

The Aggies were able to close the first half strong, going on an 11-0 run, using a pair of threes and jumpers along with some free throws to trim the halftime deficit to 35-25. Gilbert led the Cyclones in scoring at the break with nine, while Washington led TAMU with 10.

Texas A&M started the second half like it ended the first, using another run to cut the ISU lead to just four by the under-16 media timeout. The Aggies would knot the score at 13:09 and take the lead with 12:30 left on an Andersson Garcia second-chance basket. From there, TAMU held the lead the remainder of the way.

The Cyclones were able to cut the lead to one five times in the final 12 minutes but were unable to get over the hump. ISU made things interesting late, as it was within one possession with under ten seconds left, but TAMU held firm to secure the win.

 Top Performer

As previously mentioned, Lipsey recorded his second career double-double, tallying a personal best 14 rebounds. He averaged a team-best 16.7 points per game in the tournament as well as a team-high 8.7 rebounds, setting the tone for the Cyclones in all three games. Lipsey also had 12 assists and nine steals across the last three games.

Following the ESPN Events Invitational, Iowa State will hit the road for a Friday night game in Chicago against DePaul on December 1. Friday’s game is part of the BIG EAST/Big 12 Battle and will tip off at 7:30 p.m. and be televised by FS1.

Montgomery County Supervisors to open sealed bids for forfeited property

(Red Oak, Iowa) – The Board of Supervisors in Montgomery County will meet in a regular session beginning at 8:30-a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28th, in their Red Oak Courthouse Board Room (and electronically – see the bottom of this page for details). Search continues for Iowa trucker missing since last Tuesday

(Radio Iowa) – Search efforts continue for a missing Sac County truck driver nearly a week after he was reported missing. (As KJAN News previously reported), family and friends last heard from 53-year-old David Schultz, of Wall Lake, early last Tuesday, November 21st. Schultz was driving from Eagle Grove to Sac City with a load of hogs, but did not complete the delivery or pick up the next load. The semi Schultz was driving was found parked on Old Highway 71 near Sac City last Tuesday. There was no sign of Schultz and no indication of where he might be. Law enforcement as well as dozens of volunteers spent much of the holiday weekend searching for Schultz. Law enforcement agencies are asking residents in the Sac City area to search their outbuildings for any sign of the missing man.

Lake View Police are asking the public to contact them with any tips about the missing man. Schultz’s wife told KCAU TV her husband’s cell phone and wallet were found in his semi.

Reminder: Commercial Pesticide Applicator Continuing Education Courses Must be Completed by Year End

(Atlantic, Iowa) –  The Cass County Extension office is again hosting continuing instructional courses (CICs) for local commercial pesticide applicators, but wants to remind anyone who has yet to attend the training that all CIC training must be completed by the end of December to keep a license current. To avoid conflicts with year-end scheduling, Cass County Extension is requiring that all training dates be scheduled by Friday, December 15th.

“We know year end is a busy time for all, and we don’t want anyone to miss the opportunity to attend their annual required training, as time to meet those annual requirements is getting short,” shared Kate Olson, Cass County Extension Director. “We do offer trainings on a first-come, first-serve basis, and our hours will be slightly different during the holidays, so we’d like to remind folks to call and get their classes scheduled before our year-end calendar fills up.”

According to Olson, reshow dates can occur after December 15th, as scheduling allows, but they must be on the calendar before then to be honored. To ensure a spot on the training schedule, applicators needing to complete CIC for the year are asked to call as soon as possible if they have a preferred training date, but no later than Friday, December 15th at 4:30 PM. Applicators calling after this date will NOT be placed on the training schedule.

Training dates can be scheduled locally by calling the Cass County Extension office at 712-243-1132 or by emailing Office Manager Lori Anderson at lander@iastate.edu.
