NEW YORK (AP) — Jonathon Niese struck out a career-high 10 in six scoreless innings and the New York Mets shut down the slumping St. Louis Cardinals for the third straight game, getting a homer and three RBIs from rookie Kirk Nieuwenhuis in a 6-1 victory Sunday night. Andres Torres added a two-run triple and finished a homer shy of the cycle. Nieuwenhuis, batting leadoff, also had three hits. Niese (4-2) became the latest New York pitcher to dominate the Cardinals, following Johan Santana’s no-hitter in the series opener Friday night — the first in Mets history — and knuckleballer R.A. Dickey’s seven-hit shutout Saturday. The only thing that prevented the Cardinals from being blanked in three consecutive games for the first time since October 1976 was a two-out RBI single by Adron Chambers in the eighth off Elvin Ramirez, who was making his major league debut.

Feet of sand leave farms wasteland after flooding

Ag/Outdoor, News

June 4th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

MISSOURI VALLEY, Iowa (AP) — Hundreds of farmers in Iowa and Nebraska are still struggling to remove sand and fill holes gouged by the Missouri River, which swelled last summer with rain and snowmelt and overflowed onto thousands of acres of farmland. While the river flooded parts of Montana, the Dakotas, Kansas and Missouri, the worst damage was in Iowa and Nebraska. Iowa farmer Mason Hansen has been working for months to clear his property, but about 160 acres still look like a desert, with sand piled up to 4 feet high. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved more than $20 million in disaster aid to help Iowa and Nebraska farmers with the cost of moving sand, grading land and filling holes. But most farmers say that will cover only part of their costs.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Jay Haas finished with a 16-under 197 total to win the Principal Charity Classic by five strokes on Sunday, becoming the first golfer to win the Champions Tour event in Iowa three times. Haas, the winner at Glen Oaks Country Club in 2007 and 2008, led by three shots heading into Sunday and made it stand up with a final round 5-under 66. Haas’s 16-under tied the tournament mark set by Gil Morgan in 2006 and matched the largest victory of the season in the Champions Tour. Kirk Triplett set the course record with a 9-under 62 and finished second at 11-under 202 along with Larry Mize.

Names released in I-29 fatal Sunday

News

The Iowa State Patrol says one man from Omaha and one from Logan died during a crash this (Sunday) morning on Interstate 29, in Pottawattamie County. Officials say 18-year old Alvaro Rodriguez, of Omaha, and 37-year old Obed Orozco, of Logan, died during the scene of the crash on northbound I-29, two-miles north of the Crescent exit. Neither man was wearing a seat belt.

Injured in the crash, was the driver of a 1999 Chevy Tahoe, Joel Garcia-Lucero, of Omaha, and two passengers in his vehicle: 25-year old Mario Amaya-Elizalde, and 27-year old Alejandro Gardea, both of Omaha.  Amaya-Elizalde and Gardea were wearing seat belts, but Garcia-Lucero was not.  A passenger in the other vehicle, 25-year old Nicholas Miller, of Glenwood, was also injured. He was transported to Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, by Crescent Rescue. Officials say he was wearing his seat belt. The other injured passengers were transported by Council Bluffs Fire and Rescue, to the University of Nebraska Medical Center, in Omaha.

The Patrol says the accident happened at around 9-a.m, when the Tahoe tried to to pass a 2001 VW Passat driven by 49-year old Richard Miller, of Pacific Junction, as both vehicles were in the right-hand lane of I-29 northbound. The SUV went out of control and crossed back into the right lane, hitting the VW. Both vehicles went into the east ditch and rolled several times before coming to rest in the ditch. Rodriguez and Orozco were ejected as the Tahoe rolled, and died at the scene.

And, while the accident remains under investigation, officials said the SUV was littered with beer cans and reeked of alcohol

Gymnast Shawn Johnson ends comeback, retires

(AP) — Shawn Johnson is calling it a career, ending her attempts at making a second Olympic team because of a lingering knee injury.  The Olympic gold medalist and 2007 world champion announced her retirement Sunday, four days before the start of the U.S. gymnastics championships. Johnson says her left knee, injured in a January 2010 ski accident, continued to slow her down, and she worried about the long-term damage if she kept competing.

The 20-year-old from West Des Moines, Iowa, was one of the biggest stars at the Beijing Olympics. Along with her gold on balance beam, she won silvers in the all-around, team competition and floor exercise. At the 2007 world championships, Johnson won the all-around, led the Americans to their third team title and took gold on floor.
