A game of ebbs and flows, Harlan wins big over Atlantic

Sports

June 22nd, 2023 by Asa Lucas

The Harlan Cyclones and Atlantic Trojans battled it out tonight in a game full of drama. In a game of five lead changes and two ties, nobody knew how the high scoring game would end. Except for Harlan, who would leave the game with a 15-12 win.

Harlan would score first in the 1st with 1 run. They continued this way until the 6th inning where they would score 3 runs and take the lead at 7-6. Atlantic would respond with a 2 runs to take the lead back 8-7. Harlan then scored 5 runs in the top of the 7th to once again lead 12-8. It seemed over for the Trojans until the bases were loaded until and runs started coming in from walks.

The Trojans garnered 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th to tie it 12-12. Harlan came out disciplined in the top of the 8th and was walked 4 times. They scored 3 runs and the Trojans had no response in the bottom of the 8th, going scoreless in the inning.

While the loss did hurt, Coach Schelling found some positive takeaways from his team’s effort.

The Trojans do not have time to focus on their loss. They face the (21-3) Lewis Central Titans tomorrow in Atlantic. Coach Schelling recognizes the challenge they bring and the potential.

Harlans become (15-10) with the win and will play again on June 26th at Shenandoah at 5:30pm. The Trojans fall to (9-12) but will be at home to compete against the Titans tomorrow at 7:30pm.

Ernst says Biden Administration policy on trans athletes violates spirit of Title IX

News, Sports

June 22nd, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa Senator Joni Ernst is making a renewed pitch for the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act she and 20 other Senate Republicans are co-sponsoring. She opposes a Biden Administration proposal to allow some restrictions in competitive high school and college sports, but forbid outright bans on transgender athletes’ participation in female sports. Ernst, a Republican from Red Oak, says biological males should not be allowed to compete in girls’ and women’s sports.

President Nixon signed Title Nine in 1972. It bans sex discrimination in education and sports activities that are federally funded. Ernst says letting biological males compete against women and girls destroys the intent of the 51 year old law.

Ernst says forcing women to compete against biological men in sports robs them of privacy, critical scholarships and championship titles. The U-S Education Secretary says being on a sports team is an important part of the school experience for students of all ages and the Biden Administration’s proposed policy is designed to ensure equal opportunity in athletics.

Will Pearson Named ISU Men’s Golf Assistant Coach

Sports

June 22nd, 2023 by Asa Lucas

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State men’s golf head coach Andrew Tank has announced the addition of Will Pearson to the coaching staff.

Pearson joins the Cyclone staff after spending the last nine years on staff at Memphis. He joined the Tiger staff in 2015 as a graduate assistant before moving into a full-time assistant coach role in 2017.

“I’m excited to welcome Will to Ames,” Tank said. “He’s experienced and will bring a fresh perspective to help us reach new levels of success. Will is a player’s coach, and I’m excited for the relationships he will build with our team and recruits.”

During his time with the Tigers, he helped Memphis to some of the best seasons in school history. The 2016 team was the highest ranked team in program history, while the 2019 team won the American Athletic Conference championship. Pearson coached a pair of All-Americans in Lars Van Meijel and Isaiah Jackson. Ven Meijel played in the Palmer Cup, while Jackson finished with the lowest season stroke average in Memphis history. Pearson was part of a coaching staff that recruited the top six ranked amateur players in Memphis history during the modern era.

Pearson started his collegiate golf career at Arkansas before transferring to Memphis. He was a two-time Srixon/Cleveland Golf Academic All-American, while twice being named the Conference USA Golfer of the Week. He earned All-American Athletic Conference honors in 2014. He led Memphis to an NCAA Regional appearance in each of his three years, including a spot in the NCAA Championships in 2012. Pearson recorded the second-lowest round in school history when he shot a 64 at the USF Invitational during the 2013-14 season. The 65 he shot at the NCAA West Regional in 2013 is tied for the fourth-lowest round in school history. During his senior campaign, his 72.5 stroke average was the sixth-best in school history, while his 73.5 career average also ranks sixth in school history.

Iowa High School Athletic Association attempts to halt pay-per-view

Sports

June 22nd, 2023 by Asa Lucas

The Iowa High School Athletic Association has gone to court in hopes of preventing the Iowa High School Sports Network from charging viewers for streaming of championship events in six sports, beginning with next months state baseball tournament. Tom Keating is executive director of the IHSAA and says he voiced concern about imposing a fee for viewership before Tuesday’s announcement.

The network has held the rights to boy’s championship events since 2010 and the current agreement runs through 2029. The Association has filed a petition in Polk County District Court asking permission to stream the games for free if the network does not.

Despite the current rift Keating sees no problem working with the IHSSN moving forward.

IHSSN Vice President of Sales and Marketing Ric Silvestrini released this statement:
As the exclusive provider of many Iowa boys’ state championship events, we were disappointed to learn of the recent lawsuit filed against us by the IHSAA. It is important to remember that fans will still be able to watch championship games on television for free thanks to our broadcast partners around the state. However, under our new pay-per-view platform, accessing our broadcasts via streaming devices – like phones or tablets – will require a nominal fee, which is in-line with current market rates and the cost of actually attending the event live.

IHSSN is a privately held company and we have taken significant steps over the last two years to enhance the programming offered; and we believe a move to a new, pay-per-view platform for streaming customers will provide opportunities for us to add even more coverage and features in the future. Given this, we strongly disagree with the merits of this lawsuit and plan to file a response to the claims made once we have had time fully review the document.
