The Van Meter Bulldogs won the Class 2A State Softball Championship 5-3 in suspenseful fashion against the Audubon Wheelers on Friday night. Right out of the gate it seemed to be another defensive battle between two talented teams. In the top of the first inning Audubon had difficulty batting only gaining two walks and no hits. The bottom of the first inning saw Riley Miller get to work immediately striking out 2 Bulldogs and giving up no hits. The hitting struggles continued in the top of the second seeing 3 more Wheelers strike out with a variety of pitches from Madeline Waldorf. Van Meter finally managed to get a run in the bottom of the second with an error out first, making it a 1-0 lead.
The Wheelers were ready to respond in the top of the third thanks to a passed ball spinning in the backstop to bring in a run and an error from Cali Richards overthrowing the tag at home. Suddenly it was a 2-1 lead for Audubon and they forced relief pitcher Bianca Prickett to come in. Miller continued her persistent work retiring the Van Meter side quickly as the game turned into the top of the fourth. It was there that Taryn Petersen had a deep double out in the center gap to bring Mattie Nielsen home. The energy continued to build for Audubon as the lead was built to 3-1. Both sides remained in a standstill till the bottom of the fifth inning. The Bulldogs managed to load the bases with a walk, another error over at first, and a well executed bunt. Van Meter would tie in the bottom of the fifth by a bases loaded walk and RBI single from Halle Karaidos to have the game tied at 3-3.
In the top of the sixth inning Audubon would have trouble with relief pitcher Prickett as she sent three straight Wheelers back to the dugout. In the bottom of the sixth Van Meter had a base hit from Kennedy Wiedman to put the go ahead run on. Miller then forced a pop fly and created a strikeout. With two outs and a 2-2 count Mady Schnell hit a rope deep into center field past the fence for a 2-run homer. Van Meter had the lead once again at 5-3.
Audubon would get 2 runners on in the top of the seventh thanks to back to back base hits by Jordan Porsch and Miller with two outs. It then came down to Alexis Obermeier and who hit a grounder right at third base which would create a forced out and give the state title to the Bulldogs with a final score of 5-3.
Wheelers head coach Andrea Schwery was proud of the way her team played and gave credit to the talent displayed by Van Meter.
Audubon saw a lot of grit by Porsch going 2-3 at the plate and by Petersen with her RBI double. Miller pitched 6 innings, gave up 5 runs, 5 hits, and struck out 7. Coach Schwery wants her team to hold their heads up high by the effort they showed on the night.
While the loss stings, Petersen noted that they have plenty of talent coming back next year.
Speaking on next year, coach Schwery is looking forward to the depth that will be returning for another season as the Wheelers end their year with a record of 29-5.
Prickett was a major help to the Bulldogs pitching 4 and 1/3 innings, with 1 earned run, 3 hits, and striking out 2. The Van Meter scoring assisted by Wiedman with her 2 hits and in RBI’s by Schnell’s 2-run homer. The Bulldogs conclude their season on a 40 game winning streak and a final record of 43-1.
(Radio Iowa) – A site in the basement of a Cedar Rapids school is serving breakfast and lunch to children and adults after Hy-Vee pulled out of their neighborhood. Wellington Heights Neighborhood Association president Eric Gutschmidt says he was proud of local leaders for putting the funding to work during an emergency.
The City of Cedar Rapids, Linn County and Teamsters Local 238 funded the site. Meghan Dittmar manages the school district’s only free meal site which city leaders hope will lessen the blow of the grocery store closing.
The meal site will run until August 16th, one week before school starts. City leaders are actively looking into how to replace the now-closed grocery store.
MARJORIE HANSEN, 76, of Exira, died Monday, July 8, 2024, at CHI Bergan-Mercy Hospital in Omaha. A private family burial will for MARJORIE HANSEN will take place at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter, Iowa on August 8th, 2024. Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Exira has the arrangements.

(Atlantic, Iowa) – On Thursday, July 25th, 2024, the Atlantic Chamber Ambassadors visited the Cass County Fair in Atlantic to learn more about this week’s schedule of events, what the fair has to offer, and the community’s support.
Liz Denney, Fair Food Stand Superintendent and Fair board member, shared about what her different roles are around the fair, which are a year-long commitment. For 27 years, Denney has had the privilege of working in the 4-H Food stand, and she enjoys every moment of it. With the help of two other assistant superintendents, Mike McDermott and Derek Sanny, she helps out by lining up volunteers to run the food stand and explaining the different required duties. Denney also shared about the different lunch specials that the 4-H Food Stand serves such as chicken & noodles on Friday, ham balls or lamb on Saturday, Windsor chops on Sunday, and a roast beef dinner on Monday.

Another important aspect that was shared was how important the community’s support to the food stand is, as it helps continue to keep the Cass County Fair free. The Cass County Fair is the only 100% free county fair in the state of Iowa, which is something that the Fair Board and others involved are proud of. The many contributions and generous support to keep the fair the best that it can be is deeply appreciated, as it also helps continue the great nightly entertainment and add improvements to the grounds. New to the fair this year, are two electronic screen TVs in the Food Stand featuring sponsor information, entertainment, show schedules, weather and more. Also new to the Food Stand this year, macaroni and cheese and brisket macaroni and cheese has been added to the menu.

(Radio Iowa) – A northeast Iowa hospice center is piloting a new healthcare model for patients with dementia. Cedar Valley Hospice is one of about 400 care facilities nationwide unrolling a new program aimed at improving care for at-home dementia patients. Michaela Vandersee, the Waterloo center’s executive director, says the program’s focus will be a step toward better treatment for rural Iowans.
The program is a new approach to provide both healthcare and reimbursement resources for patients and their in-home caregivers. Vandersee says dementia is all-too common in the region, and support in rural areas has been sparse.
Vandersee estimates an additional 12-hundred patients will be eligible for assistance across the center’s 15-county area, as part of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid’s GUIDE program.

On July 24th, 2024, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested James Cisar JR., 63, of Atlantic, on a warrant for Harassment 3rd Degree. Cisar Jr. was transported to the Cass County Jail where he was booked and held pending his later release on bond.
On July 23rd, 2024, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested Tahni Roberts, 39, of Harlan, on the charge of Public Intoxication. Roberts was transported to the Cass County Jail where she was booked and held pending her later release on her own recognizance.
