Gov. Reynolds issues disaster proclamation for Hurricane Helene response efforts

DES MOINES— Gov. Kim Reynolds today (Tuesday) issued a disaster proclamation to ease restrictions on the transportation of materials and repair crews passing through Iowa enroute to Hurricane Helene response.  The proclamation temporarily suspends certain regulatory provisions of Iowa Code that pertain to hours of service, weight limits, and registration requirements for electrical repair crews and drivers as part of the disaster response.
The proclamation is effective immediately and expires on October 31, 2024.

Le Mars ask for help in solving Monday murder

(Radio Iowa) – Le Mars police says the shooting death of a man Monday was a homicide. Officers responding to s shots fired call found 21-year-old Miguel Martinez in an apartment around 2:30 a-m. Le Mars police chief Kevin Vande Vegte says it appears the shooting was not a random act.

Vande Vegte says they could use some help in finding the shooter.

WILLIAM “Bill” LILLARD, 88, of Atlantic, died Monday, September 30, 2024, at his home. Services for BILL LILLARD will be held 11-a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, at Roland Funeral Home in Atlantic.

Visitation with family present will begin at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, at the funeral home.

Burial is in the Atlantic Cemetery with the Atlantic Color Guard providing military honors.

Memorials may go to the family for later designation.

His wife – Karen Lillard, of Atlantic.

6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Atlantic Police respond to Little League complex damage; Alleged culprit turns themself in

(Atlantic, Iowa) – After the Atlantic Police Department took to social media Tuesday afternoon in response to an incident that took place over the past weekend, the person allegedly responsible for the damage at the Little League sports complex reached out to the police department and took responsibility for their actions. Police later noted that they “We will be working with them and the Little League board to resolve the issue.”
The Atlantic Little League complex was damaged on Saturday evening. Police said in their initial post, that “Although a poor choice was being made to “spin cookies” in the parking lot, we do believe that damaging the fence was an accident. “We understand that accidents happen,” Police say, “and we are asking the person responsible to come forward.” Authorities said they had “some video of the vehicle,” and were “working to have it enhanced for better identification.”

Police had warned that they “Would rather the parties responsible come forward and work with the Little League board to have the damage fixed. However, if we find the responsible party through investigation, charges will be pursued.”
Cass County Crime Stoppers was offering a $200 reward for information leading to charges in the case.

Ohio State’s Ryan Day talks about Iowa

Ohio State coach Ryan Day says Iowa represents a step up in competition for the third ranked Buckeyes. Ohio State is 4-0 and opened Big Ten play with a 38-7 win at Michigan State.

Day says Iowa will offer their biggest physical challenge to this point.

The Iowa defense is giving up a little more than 62 yards on the ground per game and Day says it starts up front.

Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz previews No. 3 Ohio State

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says the Hawkeyes will need a big effort at Ohio State just to have a chance. The third ranked Buckeyes are a better than three touchdown favorite, and two years ago pummeled the Hawkeyes 54-10 in Columbus.

The Iowa defense will have its hands full against a talented Ohio State offense that is averaging nearly 49 points per game.

Former Kansas State quarterback Will Howard directs the Buckeye offense.

A Ferentz coached Iowa team has never won at Ohio State and the Hawkeyes last victory in Columbus was back in 1991.

Iowa State’s Matt Campbell previews Baylor

The spotlight is getting brighter on Iowa State each week. The 16th ranked Cyclones are 4-0 for the first time since 2000 and appearing in the early playoff projections. They host Baylor under the lights and with a win will be 5-0 for the first time since 1980.

That’s ISU coach Matt Campbell who says the Cyclones can’t change what got them to this point.

Special seasons are about consistency and Campbell says there is a long ways to go.

Campbell says the Cyclones are still working to build an identity but it is more about playing the game the right way.

Iowa State’s defense ranks fourth in the country in giving up just over seven points per game and Campbell says the leadership of safety Beau Freyler and defensive lineman JR Singleton has been a big part of their success.
