Girls 1A and 2A basketball teams punched their tickets to State in Regional Finals that were contested on Wednesday night. Here’s a look at the scores from games featuring area teams.

Nodaway Valley had the lead before the clock started and never looked back in a 55-33 over AHSTW in the Class 2-A Region 5 Girls Basketball Final Wednesday night in Atlantic.

A score book error led to a technical foul being called on AHSTW before the opening tip and Maddax DeVault hit one of two free throws to give the Wolverines a lead they would never lose.  Nodaway Valley was up 9-0 before Kailey Jones scored with less than two minutes left in the first quarter to get the Lady Vikes on the board.  But they trailed the Wolverines 22-4 by the end of the first.  Things didn’t get any better for AHSTW in the second quarter as they found themselves behind 31-11 at the half.  The Wolverine lead grew to 26 points at 51-25 in the fourth quarter.

DeVault led the Wolverines with 23 points and Lindsay Davis scored 16.

The Lady Vikes were led by Claire Denning with 16 points.

AHSTW finishes the season in the regional final for the second year in a row with a record of 17-7.

Nodaway Valley moves to 23-0 and the program qualifies for the state tournament for the first time since Bridgewater-Fontanelle made the tourney in 1981.

The Boys State Bowling Tournament finished up competition on Wednesday with Class 1A and 2A action at Cadillac XBC in Waterloo.

In Class 1A Clarinda finished 5th in the team scoring and Shenandoah was 6th. Clarinda rolled a 2,987 team score, while Shenandoah dropped 2,949 pins. Shenandoah’s Zayne Swickel was the top area finisher with an 11th place 2-game total of 456.

In Class 2A Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln’s Bennett Olsen finished 23rd with a 2-game total of 406.

Girls 1A and 2A basketball teams will try to punch their tickets to State in Regional Finals that will be contested on Wednesday night. We will have coverage on KJAN of the Class 1A Region 8 Final between Exira-EHK and Lenox. That game is being contested in Winterset and Chris Parks will have the pregame at 6:45 p.m. with tipoff at 7:00 p.m. We’ll also have an audio web broadcast on KJANTV of the 2A Region 5 Final between AHSTW and Nodaway Valley. That game will be at Atlantic High School and Jim Field will have coverage with the same timeline.

The Treynor Cardinals poured in a school record 15 three pointers on their way to an 84-53 victory over the AHSTW Vikings on Tuesday night in the boys Class 2A District 16 Final. Sid Schaaf and Tim Zimmerman combined for 14 of those 15 threes and combined for 62 points to lead the Cardinals to a Substate 8 Final against Van Meter on Saturday night in Atlantic.

Treynor started the game with a fast paced attack and quick transition passing to start with a 7-0 run. They led 21-17 at the end of the first. The Vikings got within 4 late in the second quarter but the Cardinals dropped in a couple of threes late to lead 33-24 at half. Then the Cardinals erupted in the third quarter, outscoring the Vikings 30-12 in the quarter and blew the game open. Sid Schaaf connected on 4 three pointers in that quarter and scored 16 of his game leading 34 points in the period. Tim Zimmerman was red hot from outside and hit 8 threes in the game, two in each quarter of action. Thomas Schwartz added a fourth quarter trey to push the Cardinals to their record mark from downtown; he finished with 11 points.

AHSTW was led by 18 from Raydden Grobe, 13 from Brayden Lund, and 10 from Kyle Sternberg. The Vikings just couldn’t keep pace with the quick passing of the Cardinals and were late on a lot of shot closeouts. The Cardinals also did a good job of preventing Lund from getting many touches until late in the game. He scored 11 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter. AHSTW ends the season with a terrific record of 20-3. It’s a talented young group for the Vikings that returns all of their starters from Tuesday next season.

Treynor improved to 19-4 on the season and claimed the rubber match with the Vikings. The Cardinals will now play for a trip to State on Saturday in Atlantic against a Van Meter team that had to rally late to beat Panorama. That game will be a 7:00 p.m. tipoff Saturday night.

The 2021 Girls State Basketball brackets have been released by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. Brackets were released Tuesday night following 4A and 5A Regional Finals. The tourney will be held next week at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

In Class 4A Glenwood is the top seed and will open against Dubuque Wahlert on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. Harlan is the 7 seed and will open up against the 2 seed Ballard on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State softball team made history on Tuesday when it was ranked No. 25 in the USA Today / NFCA DI Coaches’ Poll. It’s a milestone for Jamie Pinkerton‘s squad, marking the first-ever appearance in the NFCA’s top-25 in program history.

The Cyclones are coming off a 4-1 weekend at the FAU Strikeout Cancer Tournament, improving to 9-1 overall on the season. Iowa State’s 4-1 mark in Boca Raton included a 9-8 upset over No. 21 Missouri, as well as a pair of wins vs. Ole Miss to book-end the weekend.

Iowa State’s 2021 squad is in nearly unchartered territory, matching the best 10-game start to a season in program history. The Cyclones’ victory over Missouri marked the school’s first-ever team to reach 8-0 to open a season.

The Cyclones return to action this weekend for the GCU Purple Classic in Phoenix, Arizona. No. 25 Iowa State will face Portland State on Friday at noon CT at GCU Softball Stadium.
