ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Hunter Dickinson gave Luka Garza fits around the basket, and Franz Wagner scored 21 points to lead No. 3 Michigan to a 79-57 victory over No. 9 Iowa. The Wolverines passed yet another test against a highly ranked opponent after beating No. 4 Ohio State last weekend. Dickinson more than held his own against Garza in a much-anticipated matchup of two standout big men. Garza led the Hawkeyes with 16 points, but he shot 6 of 19 from the field. Dickinson scored 14 points.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Caitlin Clark hit seven 3-pointers and scored 27 points, plus nine assists and Iowa rolled past No. 12 Michigan 89-67 in a game delayed five hours. The game, featuring the Big Ten’s top two scorers in Michigan forward Naz Hillmon (25.9 points per game) and Clark (27.3), was originally scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. CT. It ended at almost 10:18 p.m. Hillmon scored 24 points. The Hawkeyes led 49-30 at the half, hitting 10 of 16 from 3-point range and shooting 65.5%. The lead reached as much as 34 points early in the fourth quarter. The Wolverines shot 35.6% while Iowa was going 16 of 27 from 3-point range (59.3%).

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Kofi Cockburn scored 24 points, freshman Adam Miller added 18 and No. 5 Illinois beat Nebraska 86-70. Illinois played without star Ayo Dosunmu, who broke his nose against Michigan State on Tuesday and is expected to miss at least two more games. Freshman guard Andre Curbelo narrowly missed a triple-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists. Trey McGowens led Nebraska with 18 points. Kobe Webster and Shamiel Steveson added 12 each for the Cornhuskers.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nika Muhl scored 15 of her season-high 19 points in the first quarter and No. 1 Connecticut won the outright Big East regular-season championship with an 81-49 victory over Creighton on Thursday night. The Huskies are 19-1 overall and 16-0 in league play. They never lost a league game in their seven years in the American Athletic Conference, and now they’re two wins away from being perfect in their return to the Big East. Temi Carda had a season-high 24 points for Creighton.

UNDATED (AP) — Second-ranked Baylor begins a brutal four-game stretch as it attempts to complete a perfect regular season when the Bears head to Allen Fieldhouse to play No. 17 Kansas on Saturday night. The No. 14 Texas faces the No. 18 Texas Tech in the other marquee game Saturday, which could go a long way toward Big 12 and NCAA Tournament seedings.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Rennia Davis scored all 26 of her points in the second half, with 20 in the fourth quarter, to help No. 20 Tennessee beat Missouri 78-73. Davis made a pair of 3-pointers during an 8-0 run that opened the fourth quarter and gave the Lady Vols the lead for good. Davis scored all but three of Tennessee’s fourth-quarter points. Her 26 points matched a season high. Rae Burrell scored 18 of her 23 points in the first half for the Lady Vols. Haley Troup and Aijha Blackwell had 16 points each for the Tigers.

Atlantic takes down Glenwood to reach Substate Final

Sports

February 25th, 2021 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans boys basketball team fell twice during the regular season to Glenwood, but they were able to knock off the Rams when it mattered most. The Trojans fought for a huge road win over Glenwood 63-59 in the Class 3A Substate Semifinals on Thursday night.

It was an intense game with six lead changes and a late chance for the Rams to tie that rattled in and out. Atlantic hit four threes in the first quarter and jumped on top 20-14. The Rams opened up the second quarter with a 10-0 run to grab the lead back and held the edge at half 35-32.

Atlantic clawed their way back in front in the third on some free throws. A big momentum shifter came after Atlantic had gone up 41-38. Ryan Blum tried to tie it up with a quick three but missed and Grant Sturm grabbed the board and heaved it down the floor to a streaking Skyler Handlos who flushed it down with a dunk on the other end, forcing Glenwood to call a timeout. The Trojans led 46-43 at the end of the third. Glenwood grabbed a brief lead at 49-48 before Ethan Sturm came up huge. Sturm was fouled on a rebound and got the chance to shoot a one-and-one on the other end. He knocked down both shots to put Atlantic back in front and followed that up with a monster three the next possession to put the Trojans up 4. Atlantic used the foul line to keep the lead two possessions for a while. Ryan Blum came up with a big bucket plus one to get Glenwood within 3. The Rams had a chance to tie with 15 seconds left and Blum gave it up to Caden Johnson in the corner for a good look at a three that rattled out and Grant Sturm came up with the rebound. After missing three straight free throws prior, Sturm got the last one to give the Trojans a four point lead with 8 seconds left and seal the win.

The Trojans took advantage of a bountiful night at the free throw line, connecting on 18 of 26 attempts. Skyler Handlos finished with 22 points, Grant Sturm had 13, and Dayton Templeton had 10. The Trojans improved to 14-6 on the season and have won 11 of their last 12.

Ryan Blum dropped in a hard fought 37 points to lead Glenwood. Handlos did a great job defensively on Blum most of the night but he made a lot of tough shots anyway. The scoring depth was lacking for the Rams though, as no one else got into double figures. Glenwood ends their season at 20-3.

Atlantic advances to face Dallas Center-Grimes in the 3A Substate 8 Final on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. DC-G picked up a 39-34 win over ADM in the other Semifinal. The site of the game is yet to be determined. We’ll have coverage on KJAN Monday night with pregame at 6:45 p.m.

No. 1 Bearcats level Lopers, 95-59

Sports

MARYVILLE, Missouri – The No. 1-ranked Northwest Missouri State University men’s basketball team shot a sizzling 67.8% from the floor in a 95-59 rout of the visiting University of Nebraska at Kearney Lopers in Bearcat Arena.

The triumph gave Northwest its 20th win of the season, marking the 10th consecutive season the Bearcats have reached 20 or more victories. It’s the 10th 20-win season for head coach Ben McCollum equaling the school record of 10 20-win seasons set by Steve Tappmeyer.

Northwest (20-1 overall) shot a blistering 20-of-30 from the field (66.7%) in the opening half and followed it up with an even better 20-of-29 (69.0%) in the second half. The Bearcats drained 12-of-22 from three-point range that featured an equal 6-of-11 in each half.

Bearcat junior guard Diego Bernard put on a stat-stuffing performance with a game-high 21 points, seven assists, six rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot. Bernard went 9-of-13 from the field, which featured 3-of-5 from three-point range.

As good as Bernard was, his cast of teammates surrounding him were equal to the task. Sophomore Luke Waters continued his torrid shooting by going 6-of-7 from the field and was a perfect 3-of-3 from deep to tally 15 points. Senior Ryan Hawkins was 6-of-9 from the field with 14 points, while junior Trevor Hudgins knocked in seven of 11 field goals for 14 points. Freshman Daniel Abreu contributed with career-highs in points (11) and rebounds (5).

Northwest buried 12 of its first 14 shots and built a commanding 27-6 lead. Northwest would eventually lead 32-8 at the 8:58 media timeout. The Bearcats cruised to a 48-20 halftime lead.

The Bearcats continued their assault on the hoop in the second half and led by as many as 40 at 89-49.

Northwest will finish the regular season Saturday at home in Bearcat Arena against the Fort Hays State Tigers. Northwest and Fort Hays State will tip at 3:30 p.m., following the women’s contest.
