Atlantic runs strong at Sioux City Relays

The Atlantic boys and girls track teams had some strong performances at the Sioux City Relays on Saturday.

On the boys side Atlantic grabbed a win in the sprint medley relay with Gannon O’Hara, Zane Vance, Caden Andersen and Craig Alan Becker in a time of 3:44.74. Becker also finished 5th in the 1600M with a time of 4:31.16.

In girls competiton the 4x800M Relay team of Claire Pellett, Kennedy Goergen, Ava Rush, and Taylor McCreedy finished 3rd with their best time of the season 10:20.19. McCreedy ran a season best 5:07.61 in the 1500M to place 4th, Ava Rush rand a personal record time of 5:25.21 to finish 6th. The 4x400M Relay team of Chloe Mullenix, McCreedy, Rush, and Haley Rasmussen finished 3rd with a time of 4:18.

2021 State Track and Field Qualifying Meet Assignments

The IHSAA and IGHSAU has released the 2021 State Qualifying Track and Field meet assignments. All state qualifying meets are co-ed and are set for Thursday, May 13th with 4:00 p.m. starts.

Qualifiers will advance to the 2021 Iowa High School State Track & Field Championships, currently scheduled for May 20-22 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. There will be no more than 24 qualifiers for any event.

Tickets for state qualifying meets are $6. All sites will utilize HomeTown Ticketing, which creates a digital ticket for spectators. Tickets for all sites and classes will go on sale at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 10 through the IHSAA Tickets page.

In Class 3A Atlantic will compete at Glenwood along with the Rams, Bishop Heelan, Carroll, Clarke, Creston, Denison-Schleswig, and Harlan.

In Class 2A area team will compete at Treynor. The Cardinals will be joined by ACGC, AHSTW, Clarinda, Kuemper Catholic, Missouri Valley, MVAOCOU, Panorama, Red Oak, Shenandoah, Treynor, Underwood, and West Central Valley.

In Class 1A three sites will comprise most area schools: Audubon, Mount Ayr, and West Harrison.

West Harrison Site: Ar-We-Va, Boyer Valley, East Mills, Fremont-Mills, Heartland Christian, Iowa School for the Deaf, Logan-Magnolia, Riverside, Sidney, St. Albert, Tri-Center, West Harrison, and Woodbine.

Mount Ayr Site: Bedford, Diagonal, East Union, Essex, Lamoni, Lenox, Moravia, Mormon Trail, Moulton-Udell, Mount Ayr, Murray, Seymour, Southwest Valley, and Wayne.

Audubon Site: Alta-Aurelia, Audubon, CAM, Coon Rapids-Bayard, Earlham, Exira-EHK, Glidden-Ralston, Griswold, IKM-Manning, Newell-Fonda, Nodaway Valley, Orient-Macksburg, Storm Lake St. Mary’s, and Stanton.

Iowa State football lands linebacker commit from Missouri

The Iowa State football program picked up a new commitment for the 2022 class. Carson Willich is a three-star rated linebacker out of Blue Springs, Missouri.

Willich is currently ranked the No. 19 player in Missouri and No. 26 inside linebacker by 24/7 sports. He has been a long time target for the Cyclone coaching staff.

Willich chose the Cyclones over offers from Army, Kansas State. Louisville, Minnesota, Northwestern, and Vanderbilt.

CAM’s Lane Spieker won the 100M and Long Jump and finished 2nd in the 200M. The Cougars also won the Shuttle Hurdle Relay. Audubon picked up wins from Gavin Smith in the 110M Hurdles and Brandon Jensen in the 400M Hurdles. Riverside’s Ben Schroder won the 3200M Run.

Atlantic Alum Newell named MVC Co-Golfer of the Week

Three different women’s golfers earned medalist honors this week, and each is being honored by the Missouri Valley Conference.  Brooke Newell of Missouri State, Taylor Ledwein of Bradley are this week’s MVC Golfers of the Week.

Brooke Newell of the Missouri State women’s golf team carded a 75 in the final round of play to win the ORU Spring Invite at The Club at Indian Springs on Tuesday.  Over the course of three rounds, Newell shot a 71-68-75 – 214 to blow away the tournament field as she finished with an eight-stroke advantage on Junie Khaw of Tarleton State.  Overall, MSU carded an 302-290-308 – 900 to finish 2nd among the seven-team field. The Bears were just two strokes behind Little Rock, who won the event.  Johanna Wollenhaupt (74-75-76 – 225) and Abby Cavaiani (74-73-78 – 225) joined Newell in the top-five as they finished tied for fifth.
