Boys State Singles and Doubles Tennis Tournaments begin play today and will finish on Saturday. The Class 1A Tournament is being played at Byrnes Park in Waterloo. The Class 2A Tournament is beginning singles play indoors at the University of Iowa’s HTRC at 9:30 a.m. with doubles play still scheduled to play at Veterans Memorial Tennis Center in Cedar Rapids with Coe College on standby as a rain site.

In Class 1A Atlantic’s Grant and Ethan Sturm will be in doubles competition. Their first match will begin around 9:30 a.m. and will be against the duo of Luke Hicks & Carter Soppe of Kuemper Catholic. Other area doubles teams competing include Harrison Dahm & Colin Reis of Denison-Schleswig, Reed Finnegan & Josh Schuster of Shenandoah.

Area singles competitors in 1A are: Nathan Brown of Clarinda, Jeff Miller of St. Albert, Andrew Lawrence of Shenanodah, and Brock Bruns of Harlan.

In Class 2A CB Abraham Lincoln’s Dalton Pregon will compete in singles play.

Annual Youth Fishing Derby

The Cass County Conservation Board is holding a youth fishing derby at Cold Springs Park on June 12th 2021. The event is open to the first 50 youths age 15 and under to register for the event. Check-in will run from 8:15am to 8:45am with the derby starting at 9:00am and running till 11:00 am. Prizes will be awarded for the most total weight, heaviest single fish, longest single fish and shortest single fish.

There will also be a raffle following fishing. The Conservation board with have some live bait for use and a limited number of fishing poles for use as well. The Board would like to thank all those that donated items for the event: Weirich Welding for the trophies, and Cappel’s Ace Hardware for prizes.

Start times set for 7 University of Iowa football games

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Seven start times for the 2021 University of Iowa football team were announced on Thursday by the Big Ten Conference in conjunction with BTN, ESPN, ABC, and FOX television networks. Four of the seven announced start times will be mid-afternoon kickoffs.

Iowa will host Indiana at 2:30 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, Sept. 4, with the game airing on BTN. This year marks the first time in 41 years that Iowa opens its season against a Big Ten opponent; the Hawkeyes faced the Hoosiers on Sept. 13, 1980, in Bloomington, Indiana, in the 1980 opener. The home opener is presented by the Eastern Iowa Airport and will honor First Responders.

FryFest is also part of opening weekend. Slated for Friday, Sept. 3, FryFest is held at the Iowa River Landing and celebrates everything Hawkeye. The National Iowa Varsity Club will celebrate the Hall of Fame class throughout the weekend.

Following the opening contest, the Hawkeyes travel to in-state rival Iowa State at 2:30 p.m. The annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series game will be televised on ABC.

Iowa welcomes Kent State to Kinnick Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 18, in the Gold Game. That contest is also slated to kickoff at 2:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on BTN. Fans are encouraged to wear gold.

The Homecoming contest versus Purdue, presented by GreenState Credit Union, is on Saturday, Oct. 16. That game is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start. The Hawkeyes are the Homecoming opponent at Wisconsin on Oct. 30, with that game designated to begin at 11 a.m. 

Iowa’s regular season finale at Nebraska on Black Friday (Nov. 26) will kickoff at 12:30 p.m. and air on BTN.

The Hawkeyes have an open date on Oct. 23. Kickoff times for the remaining five games will be announced no later than 12 days prior to the game, per the media rights agreements between the Big Ten Conference and its television partners.

Mini plan ticket packages will go on sale to the general public on June 10 at 9 a.m. Select single game tickets will go on sale in July. University of Iowa faculty/staff should contact the University of Iowa Athletics Ticket Office for season tickets. The UI Athletics Ticket Office is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The office telephone number is 1-800-IA-HAWKS.

Kickoff times set for Iowa State Football non-conference games

AMES, Iowa – The Big 12 Conference today announced kickoff times and television broadcast assignments for Iowa State football non-conference games, as well as a date change for the Iowa State-TCU game.

Iowa State’s season-opener vs. UNI (Sept. 4) at Jack Trice Stadium will be a 2:30 p.m. CT kickoff on Big 12 Now on ESPN+. The following week (Sept. 11) will also be a 2:30 p.m. CT start, as Iowa State plays host to Iowa in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series on ABC.

Iowa State travels to UNLV on Sept. 18 to face the Rebels at Allegiant Stadium. The game will kickoff at 9:30 p.m. CT on the CBS Sports Network.

The Iowa State-TCU game originally scheduled for Nov. 27 at Jack Trice Stadium is now slated for the Friday after Thanksgiving (Nov. 26). Kickoff time will be either 3 or 3:30 p.m. CT on Fox or FS1.

Iowa State returns 19 starters and 10 players who have earned first or second team All-Big 12 recognition a total of 18 times from last year’s team that tied a school record for overall wins (9), broke the school mark for conference victories (8) and won the school’s first-ever New Year’s Six Bowl (Oregon, 34-17).

Among Iowa State’s top returners are the reigning Big 12 Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year from 2020 in running back Breece Hall and linebacker Mike Rose.

Iowa State’s 24 Big 12 wins since 2017 is the second-most in the league during that span.

Boys State Golf hits the links today

The Boys State Golf tournaments for Class 1A, 2A, and 3A start today and finish on Friday.

The Class 1A Tournament is being played at Westwood Golf Course in Newton and tees off at 10:30 a.m. St. Albert and Fremont-Mills are in the team field and Kyle Beam of Sidney will be among the individual field.

The Class 2A Tournament is being contested at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge. Kuemper Catholic is participating in the team race. Grant Caltrider of West Central Valley and Tyler Brandt of IKM-Manning will compete individually. Play begins at 10:00 a.m.

The Class 3A Tournament is being played at Elmwood Country Club in Marshalltown. ADM and Winterset are among the teams competing and Parker Bekkers of Denison-Schleswig is an individual qualifier. Play begins at 10:00 a.m.
