Red Oak uses second set surge to fly past Atlantic

Sports

October 18th, 2021 by admin

The Red Oak Tigers swept past the Atlantic Trojans in a Class 3A Region 1 Volleyball Quarterfinal on Monday night at Red Oak High School. The Tigers jumped out to an early lead and used a big run at the end of the second set to grab the victory 25-10, 25-20, 25-10.

The Tigers jumped out quickly in the opening set and lead 12-1 early before racing away for the 25-10 win. The second set was a much different story. The teams traded points for a long stretch with Atlantic holding a slight advantage most of the way. Atlantic then used a 5 point run to lead 20-15. The Tigers then ripped off a 10 point run to snatch the set away from the Trojans 25-20 and seize all the momentum in the match. The Tigers scored the first 6 points of the third and rolled to the win. Atlantic Head Coach Michelle Blake said it was frustrating to let the Tigers grab that momentum back in the 2nd.

The Trojans had quite a few passes that ended up awkwardly close to the net and setting at the net was a bit off for most of the match. Coach Blake said the net play was tough to see given past results against the Tigers.

Atlantic ends the season with a record of 17-20. The 13th ranked Tigers improved to 28-9 on the season and will travel to face Sergeant Bluff-Luton on Wednesday night in the Regional Semifinals.

Mevis named Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week

Sports

October 18th, 2021 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior placekicker Andrew Mevis was honored for his outstanding performance at Kansas State on Saturday, earning Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Week and Lou Groza Award “Star of the Week” honors.

A native of Warsaw, Ind., Mevis was sensational in Iowa State’s 33-20 victory at Kansas State. His accuracy and range played a key part in helping ISU claim its first victory in Manhattan since 2004.

Mevis was perfect on the night, making all four of his field goal attempts and both of his PATs. His four made field goals was a career high, and the senior also produced four touchbacks in seven attempts.

All four field goals were from 40 yards or longer, connecting from 44, 41, 41 and 40 yards. He closed out the first half by making a 41-yarder as time expired.

Mevis is having a fantastic season. He ranks 12th nationally in field goals made per game (1.67) and has made 10-of-12 field goals on the season, including 8-of-10 from 40 yards or longer. His 54-yard field goal at UNLV earlier in the season ties for the seventh-longest kick in school history.

Atlantic volleyball excited for postseason opportunity at Red Oak

Sports

October 18th, 2021 by admin

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic (17-19) volleyball team is excited for their postseason opportunity tonight as they open up in 3A Region 1 at the Red Oak Tigers (27-9). Red Oak has swept the two meetings this season and Atlantic will be looking for their first win over the Tigers since 2010. Atlantic Head Coach Michelle Blake said the Trojans have the mindset of why not now.

The Trojans have seen improvement the past few seasons and have their best record this year since 2010. Coach Blake said they just need to work on consistency and the ability to adapt.

The Trojans leaders on the season are Jada Jensen with 321 assists, Abby Smith with 204 kills, and Chloe Mullenix with 55 blocks. Red Oak has been led by Merced Ramirez with 422 assists, Lexi Johnson with 349 kills, and Liz Carbaugh with 74 blocks.

We’ll have coverage of that regional quarterfinal match tonight on KJAN. Chris Parks will have the call from Red Oak High School with pregame at 6:45 p.m. and first serve at 7:00 p.m.

South Dakota builds early lead to take down UNI

News, Sports

October 17th, 2021 by admin

The South Dakota Coyotes built an early lead and held on for a win over the UNI Panthers 34-21 on Saturday at the UNI-Dome. The Coyotes built a 24-0 lead by halftime behind two touchdown passes and one on the ground.

UNI scored the first two touchdowns of the second half with a Vance McShane 62 yard run and a 28-yard hookup from Theo Day to Sam Schnee. The Coyotes would counter back though with 45 yard field goal and a Nate Thomas touchdown run to lead 34-14 by the end of the third. Theo Day hit Sergio Morancy for a 20 yard score with 3:37 left to tally the final margin.

UNI outgained USD 393 to 314 but the Coyotes had a 13 minute advantage in time of possession. The Coyotes took advantage of two big turnovers and a botched punt by the Panthers to aid in their victory as well.

South Dakota improved to 5-2 on the season and 3-1 in the Valley. UNI falls to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in MVC play.

Next up for UNI is a road trip to Brookings, SD to face South Dakota State next Saturday. That game has been set for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff and will be available on ESPN3.
