Atlantic hopes to finish on high note against Creston

Sports

October 21st, 2021 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans (3-5) football team has put together back to back wins late in the season and hope to add one more with a home tilt against Creston (5-3) on Friday night at the Trojan Bowl.

The Panthers are looking to edge in to the playoffs and will need a win to give them that shot. Atlantic Head Coach Joe Brummer said the Panthers are a big and physical team.

Atlantic has been able to get the offense working more fluidly in the past two contests and Coach Brummer hopes they can build on that this week.

It will be the final gamenight experience for 9 seniors for the Trojans and Coach Brummer hopes they get some good support at home.

You can hear a full interview with Coach Brummer on Trojan Preview at 4:45 p.m. Friday afternoon. Kickoff for the game is 7:00 p.m. at the Trojan Bowl.

Steady Audubon squad ready for playoff opener against Stanton-Essex

Sports

October 21st, 2021 by admin

The Audubon Wheelers (7-1) open up the 2021 football playoffs on Friday against the Stanton-Essex Vikings (6-2). The Wheelers have had another strong season following a Quarterfinal appearance in 2020 and a State Runner-Up finish in 2019. Audubon Head Coach Sean Birks said one thing that makes this Wheeler team special is their ability to keep a level head.

Gavin Smith has had another phenomenal season at quarterback for the Wheelers, throwing for 701 yards and 12 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,432 yards and 31 more scores. Stanton-Essex Head Coach Jeff Grebin said this a talented Wheeler team led by Smith.

Stanton-Essex also puts a lot of faith into a senior quarterback in Carter Johnson. He has thrown for 802 yards and 13 scores and rushed for 500 and 8 more touchdowns.  Logan Roberts has been strong on the ground as well with 815 yards and 13 TD’s. Coach Birks said the Wheelers have their work cut out for them to try to slow those guys down.

Coach Grebin said his team is excited to play in a great playoff atmosphere at Chis Jones Field.

We’ll have coverage of the game on KJAN. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call on AM 1220, FM 101.1, and online at KJAN.com. Start the night with our weekly pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00 p.m., followed by pregame at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff at 7:00 p.m.

Riverside wins battle of the Bulldogs with Boyer Valley

Sports

October 20th, 2021 by admin

The Riverside Bulldogs volleyball team took down the Boyer Valley Bulldogs on Wednesday night to advance the the Class 1A Region 2 Semifinals. Riverside led most of the night and came out with a 25-13, 25-20, 25-21 victory.

Riverside jumped on top 5-1 to start the first set and controlled play, never allowing Boyer Valley to put more than two points together in the opening set. Riverside Head Coach Brooke Flathers liked the way the team started the night.

The second set Boyer Valley jumped on top 4-1 to lead off, but Riverside ripped off a 6 point run to grab the lead back. Another six point run midway through the set gave them control. The third set started the same as the second with BV going up 4-1 before Riverside responded shortly after with a 7 point rally. Riverside then maintained that 4-5 point edge the rest of the way. Coach Flathers thought there was a good response to the early deficits those two sets.

Veronica Andrusyshyn had a another monster night at the net and came away with 16 kills and 3 blocks. Ayla Richardson provided 25 assists and the freshman reached 500 assists on the season. Izzy Bluml was big in the final set, coming through with a number of big kills to the back middle and finished with 12 kills on the night. Coach Flathers said Andrusyshyn played well and was backed up by a good variety of teammates

Riverside improves to 23-13 on the season and will host a 1A Region 2 Semifinal against conference mate Tri-Center next Monday. Coach Flathers said the team is fired up for that chance.

Boyer Valley finishes the season with a record of 24-11.
