Griswold boys find a spark in big win over Essex

Sports

January 7th, 2022 by admin

The Griswold boys basketball team built a 20 point lead by halftime and roared to a 73-34 win over Essex on Friday night in Griswold.  Kamron Brownlee had 13 first half points to propel the Tigers to the lead and he finished with 16 on the night. The start of the second half was a touch sluggish until the Tigers ratcheted up the defensive intensity that sparked an 11-0 run to grab all the momentum. The Tigers got a bucket from Adam Houser and Landon Pelzer immediately stole the ensuing inbound and got a layup. The Tigers followed that with another steal and score to force an Essex time out. Tigers head coach Matthew Spunaugle said they really needed to inject some energy into the game.

The Tigers had good ball pressure all night and Coach Spunaugle said sound defense has been a point of emphasis.

Houser finished with 19 points to lead Griswold and freshman Peyton Cook also added 16. The Tigers improved to 2-7 on the season with the victory.

Essex was led by 11 points from Tony Racine in the loss and they remain winless at 0-8.

Essex girls find their groove in second half for win over Griswold

Sports

January 7th, 2022 by admin

The Essex Trojanettes held Griswold to 11 second half points and found a scoring groove of their own to pick up a 51-35 win over the Tigers on Friday night. Griswold led by 7 early in the game but Essex climbed within 2 at the end of the first. The Trojanettes grabbed their first lead momentarily near the end of the 2nd at 22-21, but McKenna Wiechman hit a three to put the Tigers up 24-22 at the break. Essex grabbed the lead in the third and clamped down in the fourth, only allowing 2 Tiger points to secure their third win of the year.

Wiechman had 15 points in the first half but only added 3 more in the second. The Trojanettes ran a box and one on Wiechman to limit her touches in the second half and it proved successful. Brenna Rossell finished with 7 points and had a number of great looks just rim out throughout the game. The Tigers fall to 1-9 on the season.

Essex was led by 10 from Hailee Barrett and 9 from Desi Glasgo who hit a couple of big threes in the second half. The Trojanettes are now 3-6 on the season.
