Longtime Iowa educator pens book about his philosophy on teaching, coaching

Sports

January 11th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The former information director of the Iowa High School Athletic Association is the author of a new book. Bud Legg spent 35 years as a teacher, administrator, counselor and coach in Iowa schools in Oakland, South Hamilton and Ames. Legg, who was a single parent of five, says he took the title of his book from a nugget of advice his mother used to frequently share with him.

“Starting when I went to high school and every time I changed jobs, she always told me, ‘Now, Bud, remember to do your best and then some more,'” Legg says. “I talked to her later in life and asked her what she meant by the ‘some more’ and she said, ‘The opportunity that you have with people. You only get them once. Make them count, because you can never revisit it the same way.” The book is called, “Do Your Best and Then Some More.” Legg says the book, which was many years in the making, describes his philosophy on teaching and coaching.

“What I had outlined early as ten chapters became 19,” Legg says, “and then I started making some phone calls and reconnecting with some people and getting some information and it all came together.” The book reveals how Legg parlayed his small school experiences and participation in activities into a career in education and service to others in Iowa — and nationally. Legg says he started the book in 2014 to fulfill a promise to his late wife.

“I didn’t write every day. I didn’t write every month. Sometimes, I’d let it set for two months and look at it — and rewrite it,” Legg says. “I always thought writing ought to come pretty easy but writing a book is an experience.” Legg has served as a football and softball official and has done reports for a number of Iowa radio and television stations. You can find the book at Amazon.com.

(Radio Iowa) Northern Iowa coach Ben Jacobson says Noah Carter will remain the starter at center tonight (Tuesday night), when the Panthers host Indiana State. Junior center Austin Phyfe is still dealing with the long term effects of COVID and his playing time has been limited.

Jacobson says Phyfe’s minutes have varied from game to game.

The Panthers are riding a three game winning streak and Jacobson credits improved defense.

Jacobson says three point defense has made strides since the Panthers lost twice in Hawaii.

Indiana State has not played since January second due to a COVID pause and coach Josh Schertz says they will have a limited number of players.

Sports

January 11th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The 15th ranked Iowa State Cyclones look for a rare win in Allen Fieldhouse tonight (Tuesday night), with a visit to ninth ranked Kansas. The Cyclones have dropped 15 of their last 16 in Lawrence with the lone victory in 2017. ISU coach T.J. Otzelberger is more concerned about how his team plays than where it is played.

Otzelberger says the Cyclones can’t get caught up in the atmosphere.

After opening 12-0 the Cyclones have lost two of their last three.

St. Albert pulls away from Atlantic

Sports

January 10th, 2022 by admin

St. Albert turned a 4 point halftime lead into a 16 point lead by the end of the third quarter and picked up a road win over Atlantic on Monday night. The Saintes won the game 56-33 to improve to 7-4.

The Saintes jumped on top early 12-4 by the end of the first quarter, with the Trojans failing to score a field goal in the period. A 7-0 run by Atlantic got them right back in the game but the Saintes did enough to hold the lead at the break 20-16. Lena Rosloniec and Grace Manz scored 6 each in the third to help the Saintes pull away. Atlantic Coach Dan Vargason thought his team got sped up and unsettled by the Saintes.

Coach Vargason called multiple timeouts in the third quarter, upset with the effort and energy his team had. He said the energy was just lacking.

Pearl Reisz led the Saintes with 15 points, hitting a couple of threes in the fourth. Manz scored 11 and Rosloniec had 10.

Atlantic was led by 9 from Aubrey Guyer and 8 each from Paytn Harter and Jada Jensen. The Trojans fall to 3-9 on the season. They will host Clarinda on Tuesday night.
