January 24th, 2022 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa sophomore Caitlin Clark was named Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Clark has tallied 28-career Big Ten weekly honors – 13 freshman, 10 player and five honor roll. This is her fourth-consecutive Big Ten Player of the Week honor and fifth this season.

The West Des Moines, Iowa, native nearly averaged a triple double in two wins over Minnesota and Illinois last week with 26.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and nine assists per game. She shot 22-for-38 (.579) from the field and 6-for-11 (.545) from 3-point range.

In Iowa’s win over Minnesota, Clark registered her second-consecutive, fourth season and fifth career triple-double with 35 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists. Clark is the only Big Ten women’s basketball player to record a triple double in back-to-back games and four triple-doubles in a single season and the first NCAA Division I player (male or female) to record back-to-back 30-plus point triple doubles since 2000.

Clark and the Hawkeyes head to University Park, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday to take on the Penn State Nittany Lions inside Bryce Jordan Center. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. (CT) on B1G Network.

January 24th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Drake coach Darian DeVries appreciates the effort he is getting from his shorthanded team. Standout forward Tank Hemphill has missed the last four games with a foot injury and senior point guard Roman Penn is playing on a broken foot. Despite that, Penn finished with 18 points and played 41 minutes, Saturday night, as the Bulldogs rallied from a late 10 point deficit for an overtime win at UNI.

That’s Drake coach Darian DeVries. Despite the injuries the Bulldogs sit third in the Missouri Valley race with a 5-2 record.

DeVries likes the toughness of his team.

The Bulldogs visit Illinois State Wednesday night.

Chiefs win epic battle with Bills in overtime

Sports

January 24th, 2022 by admin

It will go down as one of the greatest playoff games in NFL history. The Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills combined for 25 points in the final two minutes of regulation in a wild back and forth finish. The Chiefs eventually came out on top in overtime 42-36.

With the Chiefs leading by 5 Josh Allen hit Gabriel Davis for a 27-yard touchdown pass with 1:54 remaining. A two-point conversion toss to Stefon Diggs put the Bills up 29-26. The Chiefs answered 5 plays later with Patrick Mahomes hitting a crossing Tyreek Hill for a 64-yard score to put KC back up 33-29 with 1:02 remaining. The Bills came firing back and Allen hit Davis again on a 4th down throw with 13 seconds left to put the Bills back up 36-33. Mahomes wouldn’t let the game end, hitting Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce on back-to-back plays to give Harrison Butker a 49-yard field goal attempt to tie it. Butker came through and the game went to overtime.

The Chiefs won the coin toss to receive the ball first in overtime and they made it count. Kansas City drove down to the 8-yard line before Mahomes hit Travis Kelce on the right side of the end zone for the winning score, setting off a wild celebration at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chiefs will host the AFC Championship for the 4th year in a row, welcoming in the Cincinnati Bengals for the title game next Sunday afternoon.

Mahomes finished 33-44 passing for 378 yards and 3 touchdowns. Tyreek Hill hauled in 11 catches for 150 yards and 1 touchdown. Josh Allen had a phenomenal game as well going 27-37 for 329 yards and 4 touchdowns. His favorite target on the day Gabriel Davis had 8 catches for 201 yards and all 4 of those scores.

The AFC Championship is set for a 2:00 p.m. kickoff this upcoming Sunday. We’ll have coverage on KJAN.

Girls Wrestling to become 11th IGHSAU sanctioned sport in 2022-23

Sports

January 22nd, 2022 by admin

(IGHSAU) The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Board of Directors voted unanimously to sanction girls wrestling as the organization’s 11th sport. The vote was made at the IGHSAU’s January 12th board of directors meeting and was announced prior to the start of the championship round of the IWCOA Girls State Wrestling Tournament Saturday in Coralville. The first IGHSAU-sanctioned season will take place during the 2022-23 school year.

“We think there’s a great foundation in place for the success of this sport and we intend to fully support these Iowa Girls as they continue their pursuit of championships,” said IGHSAU Executive Director Jean Berger. “As the sanctioning process unfolded, the Board was able to quickly approve this new opportunity for our girls and schools across the state.  The increase in participation, the growth in youth wrestling and the willingness of our schools to commit to the sport all factored into this decision.”

The IGHSAU intends to follow the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) wrestling rules and guidelines. The next steps in this process include meeting with an appointed IGHSAU wrestling advisory committee this winter to finalize details for this roll-out year that include format for the season, classification system, weight classes, and postseason/tournament details.

“The journey to sanctioning girls wrestling as a sport for the IGHSAU has been a labor of love,” said IGHSAU Associate Director and wrestling administrator Erin Kirtley.  “I’m honored to have been given the job as a catalyst to get this part of the process accomplished for the girls in our state. While we have closed the book on formal sanctioning, we look forward to opening the next one now as we highlight all the great stories our female wrestlers are continuing to write. The IGHSAU has said from the beginning that our intent is to do what is best for the girls who participate. We look forward to giving them the same amazing experiences as the other ten sports under our umbrella, and to leave nothing spared when it comes to building them as student athletes and leaders. We also look forward to supporting the coaches and officials who serve alongside these athletes, and to give their fans a greater appreciation for what these females already do day in and day out.”

To date, 58 schools have committed to sponsoring girls wrestling programs in Iowa. The latest data from Trackwrestling.com shows 1,018 girls participating in high school wrestling, represented by over 185 Iowa schools.  Wrestling becomes the 11th sport to be sanctioned by the IGHSAU and the first since bowling was added in 2007.  Iowa becomes the 34th state association to sanction girls’ wrestling.
