Cardinals rout Royals 10-0

Sports

May 5th, 2022 by admin

The St. Louis Cardinals dropped 5 runs in the top of the first and roared past the Kansas City Royals 10-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Kauffman Stadium.

Nolan Arenado hit a three-run homer in the first and had a two-run single in the seventh to lead the Cardinals offense. Cardinals skipper Oliver Marmol adjusted the lineup to put the three best hitters Tommy Edman, Paul Goldschmidt, and Nolan Arenado at top of the order and it sparked the Cardinals offense which had been poor lately. Tyler O’Neill added a two-run homer in the ninth for the Redbirds.

Adam Wainwright picked up the win, going seven shutout innings with 2 strikouts and just 1 hit allowed. The Cardinals improved to 14-10 and the Royals fall to 8-15.

Next up for St. Louis is a trip to San Francisco for a four game set against the Giants. Thursday night’s game will be an 8:45 p.m. first pitch. We’ll have coverage on KJAN with pregame at 7:50 p.m.

Iowa State softball rolls past Drake

Sports

May 5th, 2022 by admin

DES MOINES, Iowa – Karlie Charles pitched a one-hit shutout as Iowa State (25-25, 4-11 Big 12) won its final midweek contest of the season, 9-0, against Drake (18-26, 12-11 MVC) in five innings Wednesday evening.

ISU has now won three in a row and four of its last five games.

Charles (8-5) struck out five and walked none in a dominant showing. The junior increased her season strikeout-to-walk ratio to 6.4:1 (64 K, 10 BB), the 20th-best mark in the country.

Angelina Allen logged a career-best four RBIs as part of a 2-for-2 night at the plate. The freshman hit her fourth home run of the season in her first at-bat of the game and drew a pair of walks. Kasey Simpson tied her season high with three RBIs on two hits while Kali Gose (2-of-3, 1 R) also added a multi-hit effort.

The Cyclones started fast with two home runs in the top of the first inning, one each from Allen and Simpson, to jump out to a 3-0 advantage.

Back-to-back singles from Gose and Skyler Ramos, followed by a walk from Kaylee Pond, loaded the bases with no outs for ISU in the second. The Cyclones were only able to muster a run from the threat, however, on a bases-loaded walk by Allen.

Iowa State stretched its lead to 7-0 with a three-run fourth inning, highlighted by a sac-fly from Mikayla Ramos and RBI doubles from Alesia Ranches and Simpson. Allen would add the Cyclones’ final two runs of the night in the fifth inning on a bloop single over the shortstop’s head.

Up Next
Iowa State will play its final home games of the season this weekend as it hosts Kansas in a three-game set. First pitch in the series opener is slated for Friday at 4 p.m.

Four ISU players set to compete in USA Basketball 3X Nationals

Sports

May 5th, 2022 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Four Cyclones are set to compete in the 2022 Red Bull USA Basketball 3X Nationals, which is held at the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. The event will take place from May 13-15, featuring 16 men’s and 16 women’s basketball teams along with some of the best 3×3 players in the country.

Iowa State’s Lexi Donarski, Nyamer Diew, Ashley Joens and Emily Ryan will represent the Cyclones in the 3×3 competition. The Cyclones earned their invitation based off their appearance in the NCAA Sweet 16.

“Our players are really looking forward to competing in the 3×3 competition this year,” head coach Bill Fennelly said. “It is a fun event and gives them another chance to represent Iowa State on a national stage.”

The 3X Nationals will tip off May 13 with preliminary round games. Teams will be seeded based on preliminary records before entering bracket play. Games will be played on the Hall of Fame’s Jerry Colangelo Court of Dreams, located in the heart of the Museum. The event is open to the public with purchase of admission to the Hall of Fame. Broadcast information, team rosters and the full schedule will be announced at a later date.

The event will serve as the final evaluation of athletes for selection to various 2022 USA Basketball 3×3 men’s and women’s national teams, including the 2022 FIBA 3×3 World Cup, set for June 21-26 in Antwerp, Belgium.

Played on a half court with a 10-minute clock and a 12-second shot clock, the first team to 21 points, or the team in the lead at the end of regulation, is the winner. Participating teams earned their spots in the 2022 Red Bull USA Basketball 3X Nationals either through Red Bull USA Basketball 3X regional qualifying tournaments last fall or via an at-large invitation from USA Basketball.
