Iowa linebacker Jestin Jacobs says the Hawkeye defense does not feel pressure to carry the team. The defense traditionally is ranked at or near the top of the Big Ten and last season intercepted a league high 25 passes.

Jacobs is coming off a sophomore season in which he totaled 53 tackles and also showed he can be effective in pass coverage.

The Hawkeyes open September third at home against South Dakota State.

Pocahontas prepping for RAGBRAI riders

News, Sports

July 25th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Thousands of people are leaving Ida Grove this (Monday) morning, headed to Pocahontas in day two of the RAGBRAI — the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa. It’s the first time Pocahontas has been an overnight stop on the route and Pocahontas Mayor Jada Hallberg says it’s go time. “All those details that, you know, seemed like a far out situation are now here,” Hallberg says. “We’re seeing them come together and so there’s a lot of excitement building in the community.” Some cyclists start pedaling before sunrise to beat the heat and get to the day’s final destination. Entertainment on the main stage in Pocahontas will start at 2 p.m.

“If you’re familiar with Pocahontas, you know about the bohemian background. Staying with that we have a little bit different type of bohemian polka band called ‘Polka Tunes.’ They’ll start at 2 p.m. They’ll go to five,” Hallberg says. “We have ‘Hometown Native’ coming back to get us ready for the main act…’Pop Rocks’ at eight o’clock.” Being a host community is a huge undertaking and Hallberg says it’s not just residents of the community who are stepping up.

“RAGBRAI officials told us, ‘Yes, you’ll need a lot, but don’t be surprised people will be stepping up at the last minute,’ and we are seeing that and we are very grateful to everybody who gives us a couple of hours of their time in any capacity to help,” Hallberg says. “Being a small community, I’d say that is one of our largest challenges, so we are maybe spread a little a thin, but also the good thing is outside people are coming in to help us, just not from Poky, but from our county and even relatives of people are coming in from out of town and out of state. They’re coming back to help.”

Sergeant Bluff, the kick-off point for this year’s RAGBRAI, is starting to get back to normal after thousands of visitors pedaled away Sunday. Erin Edlund, a member of Sergeant Bluff’s RAGBRAI Committee, says it was a picture perfect morning as residents lined the streets to cheer on the riders. “We had a great turnout from residents. We had a great turnout from riders and a lot of the riders did get up pretty early,” she says. “I would say the vast majority were gone between 6 and 7:30 am.”

Severe weather that marched through Iowa Saturday stayed just south of Sergeant Bluff. Streets were being cleared Sunday. “We had a team of residents that showed up ready to work and get trash picked up and make sure that we had things mostly put away,” Edlund says. “Sergeant Bluff is mostly back to normal, which feels a little strange after all the build up to this.”

RAGBRAI’s route today (Monday) covers just over 71 miles. Riders will pass through Galva, Schaller, Nemaha, Newell and Fonda before reaching Pocahontas. RAGBRAI will wrap up in Lansing on Saturday.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – – The University of Iowa’s home football contest under the lights against Nevada, scheduled for Sept. 17 at 6:30 p.m. (CT) at Duke Slater Field at Kinnick Stadium, is officially sold out, the announcement was made Friday by the UI Athletics Department.

It is the third straight day Iowa has announced a sellout, joining previously announced sellouts against Iowa State (Sept. 10), Michigan (Oct. 1) and Wisconsin (Nov. 12).

The Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series game versus Iowa State will start at 3 p.m. (CT) and be televised on BTN. Start times and network designation have not been announced for the contests with Michigan (ANF Black and Gold Spirit Game) or Wisconsin (Military Appreciation Black Out Game).

There are a limited number of hospitality ticket packages available for all four games. Ticket information is available at hawkeyesports.com/tickets.

Limited tickets remain for Iowa’s final three home contests.  There are fewer than 2,500 tickets remaining for the season opener when the Hawkeyes host South Dakota State (Sept. 3, 11 a.m., FS1), a little more than 500 remain for the game against Northwestern (Oct. 29, Homecoming, 2/2:30 p.m.), and 1,100 remain for the Black Friday game against Nebraska (Nov. 25, 3 p.m., BTN).

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior tight end Sam LaPorta has been named to the 2022 John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List. The Highland, Illinois, native was also named to the preseason watch list in 2020 and 2021.

Presented annually by the Friends of John Mackey, the award goes to the nation’s most outstanding tight end.

LaPorta (6-4, 249 pounds) was voted second-team All-Big Ten by Phil Steele and third-team by league coaches in 2021. As a junior, LaPorta led the Hawkeyes in catches and yards, hauling in 53 receptions for 670 yards and three touchdowns. The Hawkeye tight end has been named to the Athlon Sports 2022 preseason All-Big Ten First Team, and third team on Phil Steele’s preseason All-America Team.

T.J. Hockenson won the 2018 John Mackey award, becoming the second Hawkeye (Dallas Clark, 2002) to do so. Noah Fant was a semifinalist in 2018, joining Allen Reisner (2010) and Tony Moeaki (2009) as semifinalists.

The Hawkeyes open the season with three straight nonconference home games, each featuring a different start time. The season-opener, Sept. 3, against South Dakota State is slated for an 11 a.m. (CT) kickoff. The annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series game against Iowa State will follow on Sept. 10, with a 3 p.m. start time.
