July 28th, 2022 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior defensive back Anthony Johnson Jr. has been announced as a member of The Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, which honors college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society and inspire greater service in the world.

Johnson has consistently proven to be a positive influence inside the football program and in the community. He’s done community service projects that include the CyCans Food Drive, bowling with Special Olympians, YSS and the Boys and Girls Club.

He is a four-year starter for the Cyclones while playing in 50 games in his career. He’s earned All-Big 12 honorable mention accolades the last three seasons and is also a three-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree.

Johnson, a St. Petersburg, Florida, native, was Iowa State’s first recipient of the Jack Trice Endowed Scholarship, which is given annually to a Black student-athlete on the football team who is entering his senior year.

The formal announcement of the 2022 recipient is scheduled to be made on Dec. 8, and the presentation of the 2022 Wuerffel Trophy will occur on Feb. 24, 2023.

July 28th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa forward Patrick McCaffery says the Hawkeyes were not surprised by the success they enjoyed last season. Picked to finish ninth in the Big Ten after losing national player of the year Luka Garza, the Hawkeyes posted 26 victories and won the Big Ten Tournament.

McCaffery says he will be a good compliment at forward with Kris Murray.

McCaffery hopes the expectations for Kris Murray next season aren’t to high next season.

U-I athletic department makes first payment on loan from school

Sports

July 28th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

The University of Iowa Athletic Department is starting to pay back the 50 million dollars it borrowed from the school to get by following the loss of revenue brought on by the pandemic. U-I Vice President, Rod Lenhertz told the Board of Regents Wednesday, the first payment on the debt was made recently as the fiscal year ended.

They have 15 years to pay off the loan, and Lenhertz says they would like to pay it off early. He says they will look at where they stand as things return more to normal.

The Athletic Department had to get an internal loan because State of Iowa code does not allow an external loan for operating expenses.

RAGBRAI rolls through north central Iowa

News, Sports

July 28th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(UPDATED) (Radio Iowa) Nearly 20,000 riders completed “The Ride of the Century” on Wednesday as the overnight stop for the 49th edition of the Des Moines Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa was in Mason City. Riders trekked 105 miles from Emmetsburg on Wednesday, the first 100-mile leg of RAGBRAI since 1985. Steve Luper from Seattle, Washington is enjoying his first RAGBRAI experience. “The cycling has been fun. We’ve been incredibly fortunate with the weather. Saturday night when we got into Sergeant Bluff it was kind of hot and we were thinking that was going to be the weather for the week, and it’s been pretty comfortable,” Luper says. “Today’s the sunniest day we’ve had but not ridiculously hot. I’ve been enjoying Iowa corn and pie and beer. I think those are the key things for RAGBRAI.”

Colleen Nagengast of Naples, Florida says despite the 100-mile-plus ride, it wasn’t that bad, as the previous day brought a headwind. Nagengast says she’s been enjoying her first trip through Iowa on a bike. “I can understand why people have done it, I absolutely enjoyed it. The best experience I’ve done,” Nagengast says. “I’ve done other states’ tours and Iowa is the best – the camaraderie and the town’s support.” Tonia Richter from Fox Lake, Illinois says she originally wasn’t going to do the 105-mile ride from Emmetsburg to Mason City but is glad she did. Richter says she’s been pleased with her first RAGBRAI journey.

“I think the people are the fun part, right? Everybody talks to everybody, and everybody is very kind. I love that,” Richter says, “and the towns are very welcoming to us here.” Michele Randall of Rochester, New York and her husband are on their sixth RAGBRAI ride and it’s been the second time they’ve been in Mason City. Randall says she enjoyed the ride alongside Richter.  She says, “With the tailwind, and it was flat, we didn’t stop as much in the beginning because we thought it might get really hot, who knows about headwind-tailwind, and it was great. We stopped at the beer tent and did two and sat in the shade, took our shoes and socks off, had a beer, it was just delightful.” Richter added, “It was amazing. A nice way to end the ride today.”

Riders have a shorter ride today (Thursday) as it’s only 48 miles from Mason City to Charles City. From there RAGBRAI stops in West Union on Friday night and wraps up in Lansing on Saturday.

July 27th, 2022 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior linebacker Jack Campbell and senior defensive back Riley Moss have been named to the 2022 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Preseason Watch List.

Presented by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and the Charlotte Touchdown Club, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy is awarded to the best defensive player in college football. Former Hawkeye linebackers Josey Jewell (2017) and Pat Angerer (2009) were finalists for the award.

Campbell (6-5, 246 pounds) was a second-team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) and Phil Steele in 2021. In addition, he earned first-team All-Big Ten honors and was second in the Big Ten with 143 tackles – the fifth-most ever in a single season at Iowa. He earned Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week and Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors following a career-best performance with 18 tackles in Iowa’s 24-14 win over Colorado State. A native of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Campbell was the recipient of Iowa’s Roy Carver Most Valuable Player (Defense) award last season and served as a permanent team captain.

Campbell has also been named to the Athlon Sports 2022 preseason All-Big Ten First Team, as well as earning preseason first-team All-America accolades by Phil Steele, Athlon Sports, and Sporting News.

Moss (6-1, 193 pounds) was a first-team All-America selection by Sporting News a season ago and was voted the Tatum-Woodson Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year. Additionally, Moss was a first-team All-Big Ten selection by both league coaches and media. The Ankeny, Iowa, native was a recipient of Iowa’s Team Hustle Award and is second all-time at Iowa in career interception return yards (239). Moss is one of three players in program history with three interception return touchdowns.

Moss has been named to the Athlon Sports 2022 preseason All-Big Ten First Team. He was selected to both the Athlon Sports and Phil Steele’s preseason All-America First Teams. Moss was recently named to the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award watch list.

The award is named after Bronislau “Bronko” Nagurski and his legendary talents. He was a consensus All-American defensive tackle in 1929 and also an All-American fullback in 1929, becoming the only player ever picked at two positions in the same season.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa junior punter Tory Taylor has been named to the 2022 Ray Guy Award Watch List, the Augusta Sports Council announced on Wednesday. He appeared on the weekly Ray’s 8 list three times throughout the season. The Melbourne, Australia, native was named Big Ten Co-Special Teams Player of the Week for his performance against Iowa State and was named honorable mention All-Big Ten by league coaches and media a season ago.

The Melbourne, Australia, native was tabbed preseason second-team All-Big Ten by Athlon Sports and preseason fourth-team All-Big Ten by Phil Steele.

Top 10 recruit Omaha Biliew commits to Iowa State

Sports

July 27th, 2022 by admin

The Iowa State men’s basketball team landed their highest rated recruit in program history on Tuesday night. 5-star power forward Omaha Biliew announced live on ESPN that he will join the Cyclones for the 2023 class. The 6-8 forward is currently ranked 9th in the ESPN 100 for 2023.

Biliew started his high school career at Dowling Catholic before moving over to Waukee and helping lead the Warriors to the State Title in 2020 before playing last season at Link Year Prep in Missouri. Biliew is heading back to Waukee to play his senior season. Biliew averaged 8.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks this summer with MoKan Elite on the Nike EYBL circuit and helped the team win a Peach Jam championship last week.

Omaha’s brother Goanar played at Denison-Schleswig before competing at DMACC. He recently committed to continue his career at Bradley.

Iowa State currently has the third ranked recruiting class for 2023 after last week landing four-star forward Milan Momcilovic to join four-star wingman Jelani Hamilton. The Cyclones are coming off a Sweet 16 appearance last season in TJ Otzelberger’s first season at the helm.

Bicyclists on RAGBRAI face a rare ‘Century Day’ with a 105-mile ride

News, Sports

July 27th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The thousands of bicyclists on RAGBRAI are heading for Mason City today (Wednesday) on the longest leg of the ride in almost four decades. Lindsey James, of Visit Mason City, says the trip from Emmetsburg to Mason City will be 105 miles, the first time a 100-plus mile stretch has been scheduled since Mason City first hosted an overnight stop in the mid-1980s.  “The day is dedicated to the late John Karras, RAGBRAI co-founder, and this is the longest mileage day on the RAGBRAI route this year, and the first ‘Century Day’ since 1985, so it’s a big, big deal,” James says, “and we’re looking forward to celebrating this awesome accomplishment with the riders.”

With the 100-mile ride, Mason City’s theme for the overnight stop is “Ride of the Century”.  “The logo, designed by local artist Julie Kim, features muted earth tones inspired by Mason City’s famous prairie school architecture, and recognizable elements like the Historic Park Inn and downtown plaza light posts,” James says. “The wavy lines represent the Winnebago River, and the straight lines show progress and movement. The banners represent the finish line and the feeling of jubilation that comes along with a job well done.” Several large “100” signs have been placed throughout Mason City in commemoration of the 100-mile ride into town.
