Atlantic travels to face top-ranked Harlan

Sports

September 29th, 2022 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans (2-3) hit the road on Friday night to take on the top-ranked team in Class 3A, the Harlan Cyclones (4-1), on Friday night. We’ll have coverage of the contest on KJAN.

The Trojans are looking to bounce back after stumbling late in their Homecoming loss to ADM last week. The Trojans were able to keep pace with the Tigers for a good chunk of the game but didn’t close strong. They will need to finish strong this week to try to topple the Cyclones. Harlan quarterback Teagon Kasperbauer has been efficient once again for the defending champs, completing over 61% of his passes. Atlantic Head Coach Joe Brummer said it’s hard to slow the Cyclones down because Kasperbauer has so many weapons to turn to.

Harlan has five rushers over 100 yards on the season and four receivers with 80+ yards on the year. Cyclones Head Coach Todd Bladt said they look to make it tough on opponents with their balance.

The Trojans have a strong quarterback in their own right in Caden Andersen who has thrown for 1,057 yards and 10 scores this year. The Trojans have a good group of receivers on the end of those throws and Coach Brummer said they will need to make some big plays this week.

Coach Bladt has been impressed with the Trojan’s passing game and says it will test his defense.

The Trojans and Cyclones will kickoff at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night at Merrill Field. We’ll have coverage starting with our pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00 p.m. followed by pregame at 6:30 p.m. Chris Parks and Jason Ayers will have the call on AM 1220, FM 101.1, online at KJAN.com. and on KJANTV. Catch a full interview with Coach Brummer at 4:45 p.m. Friday on Trojan Preview.

Iowa’s Kaevon Merriweather previews No. 4 Michigan

Sports

September 29th, 2022 by admin

Iowa safety Kaevon Merriweather says the defense must limit big plays to have any chance against fourth ranked Michigan. The Wolverines struck with two big plays early and clobbered the Hawkeyes 42-3 in last year’s Big Ten Championship.

Merriweather says the Hawkeyes must make the Wolverines go on extended drives.

As a native of Belleville, Michigan, Merriweather says this game has a lot of meaning for him.

Kickoff on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium is 11:00 a.m. We’ll have coverage on KJAN starting with pregame at 9:00 a.m.

Iowa State looks to bounce back at Kansas

Sports

September 29th, 2022 by admin

Iowa State has been very good at bouncing back from a loss under Matt Campbell and that will be the goal this week against Kansas. The Cyclones are coming off a 31-24 loss in their Big 12 opener against Baylor.

That’s senior receiver Xavier Hutchinson who says this is a much improved Kansas team from the one the Cyclones beat 59-7 last season.

Hutchinson on the style of defense they will see from the Jayhawks.

Kickoff in Lawrence, KS on Saturday is 2:30 p.m.

Kansas coach Lance Leipold previews Iowa State

Sports

September 29th, 2022 by admin

Kansas coach Lance Leipold says his team is not concerned with the national rankings. Despite a 4-0 start to the season the Jayhawks are not ranked heading into this week’s game against Iowa State.

Leipold says the ISU program is one they have tried to model themselves after.

Leipold says Hunter Dekkers’ time in the Iowa State program has helped him adjust to the starting role.

Leipold says Dekkers’ has played well.

Kickoff in Lawrence Saturday is at 2:30 p.m.

Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz previews Michigan

Sports

September 28th, 2022 by admin

Iowa has fared well against highly ranked teams at home and the Hawkeyes will get another chance on Saturday by hosting fourth ranked Michigan. Iowa has won five of its last six games at home against teams ranked in the top five and coach Kirk Ferentz says home field advantage is part of it.

Ferentz says teams like Michigan can strike with big plays in every phase and it takes a complete effort to have a chance.

Ferentz says while the Hawkeyes do not view this as a revenge game Michigan’s 42-3 win over the Hawkeyes in last year’s Big Ten Championship game is in hot rotation at the football facility.

Michigan jumped on the Hawks with two big plays early and Iowa never even fired a shot.

The Iowa defense has a big challenge trying to slow down Michigan running back Blake Corum.

On the injury front senior corner Terry Roberts may play but Ferentz says the Hawks will be without receiver Keagan Johnson and linebacker Jestin Jacobs.
