CAM and Baxter square off for the first time to start the playoffs

Sports

October 20th, 2022 by admin

The CAM Cougars and Baxter Bolts will meet for the first time on the football field on Friday night and they’ll do it on the playoff stage. The Cougars get to host the meeting for two teams that were 2nd place finishers in their respective districts. CAM head coach Barry Bower said it’s exciting to face an unfamiliar foe.

The Cougars have been able to improve throughout the season. Chase Spieker has thrown for 1,228 yards and 22 scores. Austin Williams has led the ground attack with 794 yards and 15 touchdowns. Some experienced receivers and lineman have fostered that production. Baxter head coach Rob Luther thinks the Cougars play a solid style of ball.

The Bolts have been led by a senior standout at quarterback. Cody Damman has thrown for 1,256 yards and 22 scores, while also rushing for 1,024 yards and 21 more touchdowns. Coach Bower said the Cougars will have to stay aware of Damman’s dual-threat.

Coach Luther said Damman is certainly going to have to have a great game if they want to come out with a win. At the same time he also likes the fact they have a number of guys that have performed in the pass game.

The Cougars and the Bolts will kickoff at 7:00 p.m. in Anita on Friday. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call on AM 1220, FM 101.1, and online with audio at KJAN.com. The night starts with our pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00 p.m. with pregame to follow at 6:30 p.m.

Atlantic motivated to get a win to have a shot at the Playoffs

Sports

October 20th, 2022 by admin

It’s a win and have a chance week for the Atlantic Trojan football team. The Trojans close out the regular season with a trip to Creston and need to win to have a shot and getting into the playoffs. Some other things would have to fall their way to make it happen but the impetus to win is there for a team led by 21 seniors. Atlantic head coach Joe Brummer said they are fired up for the opportunity.

Atlantic is coming off a convincing home win over Saydel and hope to carry the momentum of a two game win streak forward. Coach Brummer said it’s been great to see the team adapt to different situations and they have gelled well the last couple of weeks.

Creston is looking to bounce back after a blowout loss to Harlan last week but they have a strong backfield to try to contain. Running back Brennan Hayes has rushed for 1,209 yards and 10 scores. Quarterback Kyle Strider has thrown for 1,363 yards and 11 scores while rushing for 7 more TD’s. Coach Brummer said the main focus has to be slowing down Hayes.

The Trojans and Panthers kickoff at 7:00 p.m. in Creston Friday night. Listen to a full interview with Coach Brummer Friday afternoon at 4:45 p.m. on Trojan Preview on KJAN.

Iowa president asks fans upset with Hawks’ 3-3 record to find a way to be supportive

News, Sports

October 20th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) University of Iowa president Barbara Wilson says the student athletes on the Hawkeye football team want to win just as much as everybody else and she’s asking fans to find a way to be supportive.

The Hawkeye football team won ten games last season and played in both the Big 10 championship game and the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Day. This year’s team record stands at three-and-three and two of those losses were in Kinnick stadium in Iowa City.

Wilson describes Hawkeye sports as the corridor to the university.

The Iowa Wave started in 2017 after the hospital opened. At the end of the first quarter, everyone in the stadium — including the coaches and players on the field — turns toward patients and families watching the game from the 10th floor of the hospital.

Wilson has been the university’s president since mid-2021. She made her comments during taping of “Iowa Press” which airs Friday night, on Iowa P-B-S.

Iowa’s Luke Lachey on returning to Columbus

Sports

October 20th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

When Iowa visits second ranked Ohio State on Saturday It will be a homecoming for Hawkeye tight end Luke Lachey. The sophomore is a native of Columbus and his father is the color analyst on the Buckeye radio broadcast. Jim Lachey was an All-American offensive lineman at Ohio State and spent 10 seasons in the NFL.

Lachey grew up going to Ohio State games and was disappointed when the Buckeyes did not offer him a scholarship.

Lachey is not sure he will get the chance to visit with his dad.

Punchless Iowa offense looking for answers

Sports

October 20th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

An Iowa offense that is struggling in every phase faces a difficult challenge on Saturday at second ranked Ohio State against a Buckeye defense that is ranked in the top 10 nationally. An efficient run game would help the offense at least stay on the field a little longer but the Hawkeyes are ranked near the bottom nationally by averaging less than 83 yards per game.

That’s sophomore tackle Mason Richman who is the most experienced member of an offensive line that has been overmatched in nearly every game this season.

Freshman running back Kaleb Johnson is a native of Ohio and this will be his first visit to Ohio Stadium.
