Kaleb Johnson named Big Ten Offensive and Freshman Player of the Week

Sports

November 7th, 2022 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa true freshman running back Kaleb Johnson has been named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week following his performance in the Hawkeyes’ 24-3 win at Purdue on Nov. 5. The announcement was made Monday by the Big Ten Conference office.

The dual Big Ten honors are the first for Johnson after he led Iowa’s ground game against the Boilermakers. Johnson rushed 22 times for 200 yards and one touchdown. His touchdown covered 75 yards and came on the second play of the third quarter as the Hawkeyes increased their margin to the eventual final score.

Johnson (6-foot-0, 212-pounds) had career bests in rushing attempts and yards, along with a career best with two receptions for 17 yards. The 200 rushing yards are the 18th-most in a single game in program history, the second-most by a Hawkeye freshman all-time (Marcus Coker, 219 vs. Missouri, Insight Bowl) and the first by an Iowa player since 2015.

Johnson is the first Hawkeye freshman since Coker in 2010 to have two 100-yard rushing games, as he rushed seven times for 103 yards and two touchdowns in Iowa’s win over Nevada. The 75-yard score is Iowa’s longest rush from scrimmage since Tyler Goodson’s 80-yard touchdown run against Wisconsin in 2020.

Johnson, a native of Hamilton, Ohio (Hamilton High School) is Iowa’s leading rusher on the season with 96 attempts for 553 yards and four touchdowns. He is second on the team with 24 points and is averaging 24.6 yards on 11 kickoff returns.

Johnson is the fourth Hawkeye to be honored this season. Punter Tory Taylor earned special team honors on two occasions (South Dakota State, Rutgers) and defensive back Kaevon Merriweather earned defensive honors for his play at Rutgers. Kicker Drew Stevens earned Freshman of the Week honors for his play in the win over Northwestern.

Iowa (5-4, 3-3) hosts Wisconsin (3-5, 2-4) in a battle for the Heartland Trophy on Saturday (2:30 p.m. CT, FS1) at Kinnick Stadium.

The UNI Panthers gave top-ranked South Dakota State a scare but the Jackrabbits ultimately prevailed 31-28 on Saturday at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.

SDSU led 28-14 early in the third quarter but the Panthers came charging back. Theo Day scored on a 2-yard run with 4:41 to play to tie the game. The two teams whiffed on their next possessions and SDSU got the ball back late and drove to the Panther 17 with :02 left. Jackrabbits kicker Hunter Dustman missed the 34-yard attempt left but UNI was called for an illegal leap on the play. That gave Dustman another shot from 26-yards and he converted to get the win for SDSU.

Lynnville-Sully grounds out win over AHSTW

Sports

November 4th, 2022 by admin

The Lynnville-Sully Hawks ground their way through the rain to grab a 20-0 win over AHSTW in the Class A Quarterfinals on Friday. Hawks tailback Corder Noun-Harder opened the scoring with a 69-yard punt return touchdown and ran for another score in the second half to lead the Hawks to the semis.

A driving rainfall was the story of the game, making it difficult for either team to hang on to the ball and put together much on offense. The Hawks were able to tilt the game in their favor by winning the field position battle early. A Viking fumble gave the Hawks a short field in the first quarter and they eventually got the punt return by Noun-Harder with 2:48 left in the first quarter to grab the lead.   The Vikings best starting field position of the first half came on the next possession because the Hawks sent the kickoff out of bounds but the Vikings went three and out. Late in the half the Vikings had a punt from their own end zone tipped and it went out of bounds at the 23 to give the Hawks a very short field. 5 plays later Kyle Squiers punched it in on a 3-yard run to make it 14-0 at half.

The ground game took over for Lynnville-Sully in the second half. Using a tight wing formation and direct snaps to Noun-Harder the Hawks melted away the clock. They had a 12-play drive and 9-play drive on their first two possessions of the second half. The second possession ended with a 1 yard plunge from Noun-Harder to make the score 20-0 with 1:20 left in the third quarter.

Ball security plagued both teams due to the rain but the Vikings seemed to struggle much more than the Hawks. The Vikings had three drives end in fumbles and a large number of snaps and handoffs hit the ground throughout the game.

Lynville-Sully improved to 11-0 on the season and advance to the Class A Semifinals next Thursday against West Hancock at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.

AHSTW sees their phenomenal season end with a record of 10-1.
