Spartans win double overtime thriller over CAM

Sports

December 9th, 2022 by admin

Easton Nelson’s layup in the final 20 seconds sent Exira-EHK to a double-overtime win over CAM 73-71 on Friday night in front of a packed house in Anita. The Spartans led by as many as 16 points in the second quarter but the Cougars clawed their way back in the second half.

The Spartans led 34-23 at halftime and the Cougars trimmed the lead to 4 at 44-40 by the end of the third. CAM got within 2 points five different times in the fourth quarter and finally tied it in the final seconds on a slicing layup by Seth Hensley. Tied at 57 the two teams traded blows in the extra session and combined to go 10-10 at the free throw line. The final two free throws in overtime were drained by Sam Foreman to tie the game at 63 and send it to another extra period. With the game square at 71 the Spartans ran a set that got Easton Nelson a great look on the left block that he banked in to put Sparty up 73-71. CAM had one last chance but a scramble for the ball after Chase Jahde hit the deck and tried to put up a shot from his knees let time run out. After the game Nelson talked about that final bucket.

Spartans head coach Doug Newton was proud of the response his team had in the big moments.

Cash Emgarten led the Spartans with 18 points and he said a win like this should give the team a great boost.

Derrek Kommes added 16 points and Trey Petersen had 12 to help the Spartans move to 3-0 on the season. They get right back after it against IKM-Manning on Saturday afternoon.

CAM was led by 28 points from Sam Foreman and 22 from Chase Jahde. The Cougars fall to 1-2 and will head to face a tough West Harrison team on Tuesday.

Sports

Exira-EHK freshman Brylie Andersen glanced in a three high off the glass from the corner to help lift Exira-EHK to a 62-58 win over the CAM Cougars on Friday night in Anita. It was a back-and-forth affair and the Cougars were up 58-56 in the final minute when Andersen got the three to put the Spartans on top. They would get a couple more free throws and a big rebound on a free throw miss to seal the win.

Exira-EHK head coach Tom Petersen was proud of the effort, “We faced a lot of adversity tonight. Obviously it’s a game of runs but for the girls to find a way, that’s what I told them in the locker room I was really proud of the effort. That’s one of the things I love about this group, the 50-50 balls they are all over the floor so I love ’em.”

The Spartans started the game on a 10-0 run but the Cougars rallied to lead 14-12 at the end of the first quarter. Exira-EHK led 31-29 at half and 44-40 at the end of the third. The game featured ten lead changes.

Exira-EHK was led by 15 points from Quinn Grubbs, 14 from Jaelynn Petersen, and 11 from Shay Burmeister. The Spartans improved to 3-0 and will be back at it on Saturday with a trip to IKM-Manning.

CAM got 15 points each from Reese Snyder and Eva Steffensen. The Cougars fall to 3-2 and will next up head to West Harrison on Tuesday.

ST. LOUIS, MO., December 9, 2022 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have signed free-agent All-Star catcher Willson Contreras to a five-year contract (2023-27) that includes a club option for 2028.  Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are pleased to introduce Willson Contreras as the newest member of the St. Louis Cardinals,” stated Cardinals President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak.  “Willson is a proven All-Star performer who is driven to win each and every day.  The Cardinals have had a lengthy history of standout catchers, and we feel that Willson is someone who is capable of adding his name to that distinguished list in the years to come.”

Contreras, 30, has played seven seasons with the Chicago Cubs and was the longest active tenured member of the organization when he became a free agent at the end of the 2022 season.

Over his seven-year Major League career, Contreras has appeared in 734 games, batting .256 with 117 home runs, 365 RBI and an on-base percentage of .349, ranking 3rd among all primary catchers in on-base percentage since arriving in the Major Leagues in 2016.  Defensively, he ranks 2nd among all active Major League catchers with 25 pick-offs and has the most since 2016.

In 2022, Contreras played in 113 games, batting .243 with 22 home runs, 55 RBI and posted single-season career highs with 65 runs scored and 47 extra base hits.

The native of Puerto Caballo, Venezuela, is a four-time postseason participant, playing in 30 games, and won a World Series in 2016.  He was named as the starting catcher for the National League All-Star team in 2018, 2019 and 2022.

The right-handed hitting Contreras has hit 20 or more home runs in four seasons since 2017, tied with Salvador Pérez and Yasmani Grandal for the most among MLB catchers over that period, becoming the only catcher in Cubs history with four seasons of 20 or more home runs.

Contreras has appeared at five different positions, primarily at catcher with 626 games, followed by 39 in the outfield, 11 at first base and two at third base.  His 5,016 career innings at catcher rank 7th-most among MLB catchers from 2016-22, including leading all MLB catchers with 1,109.2 in 2018.

His brother, William, has played for the Atlanta Braves since 2020 and the two brothers started for the National League in the 2022 All-Star Game, the 5th set of brothers to start an All-Star Game in the same year.

Open season on raccoons approved

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

December 9th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The state Natural Resources Commission has approved a D-N-R proposal to create a continuous open season on raccoons. D-N-R wildlife biologist, Vince Evelsizer, told the commission the request was not taken lightly and came after a review of various raccoon population surveys. “It starts with our annual wildlife surveys. So for example, the spring spotlight survey that our staff do statewide, that’s showing a consistent increase in the raccoon population,” Everlsizer says. He says there’s been a steady increase in the raccoon population in roughly the last 20 years. Evelsizer says they also have consulted with the wildlife depredation staff that deal with raccoons and deer and other animals that annually eat up crops and cause other problems.

“Those depredation staff are already dealing with nuisance raccoons and crops. And all wildlife staff and law enforcement staff are dealing with raccoons and attics, raccoons and barns, raccoons and farm equipment, and things like that,” he says. Evelsizer says having a continuous raccoon season will provide some help with the issues. “What we’re proposing here won’t fix the problem, what we’re proposing is to make adjustments that are within our means to give folks a little more freedom to deal with a population of raccoons that has increased and is high,” he says. Evelsizer says they’ve also seen an increase in distemper outbreaks around the state — which he says is typically indicative of a high density of raccoons.

“And when a raccoon gets distemper — it’s not it’s not a pretty thing — they carry it, they can spread it to others, then they will die from that usually, and it’s not a quick death either,” according to Evelsizer. “So that’s not a thing we’d like to see out there on the landscape either.” The senior director in the Wildlife Protection department at the Humane Society of the United States, Jill Frtiz, did speak out against the issue during the public comment portion of the N-R-C meeting. “Instead of Iowa randomly killing more raccoons, we suggest that reports of high raccoon densities and claims of increased raccoon conflict and predation should be carefully reviewed against current human population density, and movement and development, local agriculture practices, and the effects of growth and climate change on native wildlife habitat factors,” Fritz says.

The Natural Resources Commission also approved a proposal to extend the regular trapping season for other furbearers by one month. “We did feel that was okay biologically, and as far as selling those furs can they be utilized in the fur market? Yes, they can in February. The pelts are still in good shape. Ethan and prime at that time,” he says. That extension impacts the trapping of mink, muskrat, badger, opossum, weasel, striped skunk, fox (Red and Gray), beaver, coyote, river otters, bobcats, gray (Timber) wolf and spotted skunk. A public comment period on the proposed change will be set for sometime in January, and then there will be a public hearing on the issue in February.

Sports

The UNI men take a 3-5 record into Friday night’s game at home against McNeese State. A bright spot early has been the play of freshman guard Trey Campbell. The Cedar Falls product is averaging just over seven points per game and is coming off a career high 15 in a Tuesday night loss to Toledo.

That’s Panther coach Ben Jacobson who has had to use a variety of lineups in the early going due to injury and illness.

McNeese State has struggled to a 2-6 record.
