Chiefs rally in fourth quarter to take down Denver

Sports

January 1st, 2023 by admin

The Kansas City Chiefs shook off a sluggish start and came up with some big fourth quarter plays to beat the Denver Broncos 27-24 on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chiefs headed into the final period trailing 17-13 but quickly came up with a big offensive play followed by a defensive takeaway to leap out front. Ten second into the fourth Blake Bell hauled in a 17-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Mahomes to puck KC up 20-17. L’Jarius Sneed then came up with a big interception off Russell Wilson to swing the momentum toward the Chiefs. A few plays later Jerick McKinnon hauled in his second short touchdown catch of the game to make it 27-17 Chiefs with 12:36 to play. The Broncos fought til the end with a touchdown run by Wilson with 6:14 to play. The Chiefs were able to burn some clock on offense and then Chris Jones came up with a huge fourth down sack on the Broncos final possession to seal it.

The Chiefs picked up their 15th straight win over the Broncos and keep their hopes of earning the top-seed in the AFC alive. The Bengals face the Bills in a big game on Monday night that could swing that top seed.

Mahomes finished 29-42 for 328 yards and 3 touchdowns with one interception in the end zone. Kadarius Toney hauled in four catches for 71 yards but also fumbled on a punt return. The Chiefs improved to 13-3 on the season.

Next up for Kansas City is the regular season finale at the Las Vegas Raiders next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. We’ll have it on KJAN with pregame at 2:30 p.m.

Gabe Kalscheur hit five 3-pointers and scored 23 points to lead Iowa State (10-2, 1-0 Big 12) to a 77-62 win over No. 12 Baylor (10-3, 0-1) in the Big 12-opener Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.

The Cyclones were down nine points in the first half, but a late first-half flurry and a strong start to the second half gave the Cyclones control for the rest of the contest to end a six-game losing skid to the Bears. It was head coach T.J. Otzelberger’s seventh victory over a ranked opponent in his two-year tenure with the Cyclones.

Kalscheur had the hot hand, hitting 7-of-13 shots from the field and 5-of-9 attempts from beyond the arc. His triple with 5:22 left in the game gave the Cyclones a 69-54 lead and put the game out of reach.

Kalscheur had help from Caleb Grill, who scored 18 points behind 5-of-9 shooting from downtown. Grill also posted a team-high seven boards. Jaren Holmes added 10 points, all in the second half.

The Cyclones had 19 points off 19 Bear turnovers. Adam Flagler led the Bears with 20 points, tallying 18 in the opening period.

January 1st, 2023 by Jim Field

Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz told reporters after the game that Jack Campbell’s grandfather died Friday night as the result of a traffic accident.  William Smith, 76, was walking with family members when he may not have heard a warning not to cross a street.  He was hit by a van and declared dead at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Iowa officials said Campbell’s parents told him about his grandfather’s death after the game, “so that Jack would have one last time to play with his Iowa Hawkeye teammates.”

Campbell, the unanimous First Team All-American and Butkus Award winner, led Iowa with 10 tackles and had a sack and two tackles for loss.

Music City Bowl:  Iowa 21, Kentucky 0

  • Joe Labas threw for 139 yards and a touchdown in his first start and Iowa posted the first shutout in the Music City Bowl’s 24-year history by beating Kentucky 21-0 Saturday.  Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz capped his 24th season by matching the late Joe Paterno for the most bowl victories among Big Ten coaches with his 10th. This was the Hawkeyes’ second shutout in a bowl game, following the 1996 Alamo Bowl, and the first by a Big Ten team since Penn State beat Texas A&M in the 1999 Alamo Bowl.  Iowa (8-5) got a bit of payback for ending last season by losing to Kentucky in the Citrus Bowl after a late comeback by the Wildcats. The Hawkeyes’ defense outscored its offense in this one, returning two interceptions for TDs in the second quarter. The Hawkeyes finished the season with their fifth win in six games.  The Hawkeyes scored all their points in the second quarter to seize control, scoring twice 11 seconds apart early in the quarter.  Taking his first snaps in a college game with Spencer Petras out with an upper-body injury, Labas hit Sam LaPorta with a short pass that the tight end took 27 yards, pushing through defenders. Labas then found Luke Lachey for a short pass, and the tight end finished off a 15-yard touchdown with 12:08 left.  Drew Stevens pushed the ensuing kickoff out of bounds, setting Kentucky up at the 35. Freshman Destin Wade, also making his collegiate debut, was picked off by Iowa safety Xavier Nwankpa, who went 52 yards for the 14-0 lead.  Bowl MVP Cooper DeJean picked off Wade on third-and-10 from the Kentucky 7 and easily ran 14 yards for a 21-0 lead.

 Sugar Bowl:  #5 Alabama 45,  #9 Kansas State 20

  • Bryce Young passed for 321 yards and five touchdowns in a game that other top NFL prospects might have skipped, and No. 5 Alabama responded to an early two-score deficit with 35 straight points to defeat 11th-ranked Kansas State 45-20 in the Sugar Bowl on Saturday.

 Fiesta Bowl:  #3 TCU 51, #2 Michigan 45

  • Max Duggan accounted for four touchdowns, TCU returned two interceptions for scores and the third-ranked Horned Frogs withstood a frantic second-half surge by No. 2 Michigan to win the Fiesta Bowl 51-45 on Saturday night and advance to the College Football Playoff national championship.  TCU (13-1), the most unlikely team ever reach the four-team playoff in its nine-year history, has one more game left in its improbable season against No. 1 Georgia on Jan. 9 at Sofi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

Peach Bowl:  #1 Georgia 42, #4 Ohio State 41

  • Stetson Bennett capped No. 1 Georgia’s comeback from a two-touchdown, fourth-quarter deficit with a 10-yard, last-minute scoring pass to Adonai Mitchell in a 42-41 victory over No. 4 Ohio State for a shot at its second straight national title.  The comeback in the College Football Playoff Peach Bowl semifinal held just after midnight Sunday when Noah Ruggles’ 50-yard field goal attempt for Ohio State with three seconds remaining sailed wide left, setting off a celebration on the Georgia sideline.  Georgia (14-0) will play No. 3 TCU, which beat No. 2 Michigan 51-45 in the Fiesta Bowl semifinal, on Jan. 9 for the national championship. The Bulldogs, who won their first national title since 1980 last season, will play for the first back-to-back championships in school history.

  • Taulia Tagovailoa threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Octavian Smith, Chad Ryland kicked three field goals and Maryland outlasted No. 25 North Carolina State 16-12 to win the Duke’s Mayo Bowl on Friday.  Tagovailoa finished 19 of 37 for 221 yards with two interceptions. Roman Hemby ran for 65 yards rushing on 24 carries for Maryland (8-5), which won its second straight bowl game.  Jakorian Bennett, who helped seal the win with a late interception, was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. The Terrapins’ defense held N.C. State to 27 yards rushing on 18 carries and kept the Wolfpack out of the end zone.

Sun Bowl:  Pittsburgh 37, UCLA 35

  • Ben Sauls booted five field goals, including a 47-yarder with seconds to play, to lift Pitt to a 37-35 win over No. 18 UCLA in a back-and-forth Sun Bowl.  The Panthers (9-4), playing without five starters who opted out of the game, took advantage of five UCLA turnovers, including four interceptions.  UCLA (9-4) scored what appeared to be the game-winning touchdown on an 8-yard run by T.J. Harden with 34 seconds remaining. That capped a drive that started at the UCLA 25-yard line with less than two minutes left, and was keyed by a 34-yard run by Harden.  Pitt quarterback Nick Patti got completions of 18 and 17 yards to Jared Wayne and Bub Means on the ensuing drive. After spiking the ball to stop the clock, Patti scrambled for 11 yards to the UCLA 29-yard line. After another spike with 10 seconds left, Sauls came on to kick the game-winner, which sailed through the uprights with just four seconds remaining.

Gator Bowl:  #21 Notre Dame 45, #19 South Carolina 38

  • Tyler Buchner accounted for five touchdowns to help offset two interceptions returned for TDs, and No. 19 Notre Dame beat 20th-ranked South Carolina 45-38 in a wild TaxSlayer Gator Bowl on Friday.  The highest-scoring game in Gator Bowl history was filled with big plays and memorable moments. But Buchner delivered the knockout blow when he found tight end Mitchell Evans wide open for a 16-yard touchdown on a third-and-7 play with 1:38 remaining.  Buchner, who regained the starting job after Drew Pyne entered the transfer portal following the regular-season finale, threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 61 yards and two scores.

Arizona Bowl:  Ohio 30, Wyoming 27 (OT)

  • CJ Harris hit Tyler Foster on a 10-yard touchdown pass in overtime, lifting Ohio to a 30-27 win over Wyoming in the Arizona Bowl on Friday.

Orange Bowl:  #6 Tennessee 31, #7 Clemson 14

  • Tennessee QB Joe Milton III passes for 251 yards, 3 TD’s in the win.  Clemson rolled up 484 totals yards on 101 plays but struggled to finish drives against the tough Volunteers defense.
