AMES, Iowa – Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell has named Ryan Clanton, who served as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at UNI the past five seasons, the offensive line coach for the Cyclones.

Clanton saw a pair of his offensive linemen picked in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft during his tenure at UNI. Offensive tackle Trevor Penning was a 2022 first round pick by the New Orleans Saints, while right offensive tackle Spencer Brown was a third-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in the 2021 draft.

“We are excited to add Ryan to our coaching staff,” Campbell said. “He had great success as a player, competing at a high level, and is someone that has had a significant impact on the players he has coached. He’s helped send multiple players to the NFL and I believe he’ll have a tremendous impact on our program as well.”

At UNI, Clanton was elevated to offensive coordinator prior to the 2022 season. In his first season running the offense, UNI averaged 33 points per game and 444.9 yards per game, increasing both totals from the previous season.

The 2022 Panthers ranked among the nation’s leaders in total offense (16^th), third-down conversion percentage (fourth – 52 percent), passing yards per completion (eighth – 14.8) and tackles for a loss allowed (sixth – 4.1).

In total, Clanton saw his offensive linemen earn eight All-Missouri Valley Football Conference honors in his five seasons with the program. Penning was a First-Team All-American in 2021 and Jackson Scott-Brown earned first-team honors from the Walter Camp Foundation in 2019. Jared Penning earned Freshman All-America accolades and was Freshman Player of the Year from Phil Steele in 2021.

The Panthers reached the FCS Playoffs three times in five seasons, including advancing to the quarterfinals in 2019.

Prior to his time at UNI, Clanton spent four seasons at Ventura College (Calif.) where 19 of his 20 starting offensive linemen earned all-conference accolades. Six of his players earned all-state and four earned All-America accolades. He also served offensive coordinator and running game coordinator during his time, with VC finishing among the leaders in red-zone scoring offense, passing touchdowns, third-down conversion percentage, yards per game and first downs per game.

Clanton, a Bakersfield, California, native, attended City College of San Francisco and played for the Rams in 2008 and 2009, earning Junior College All-America honors on the offensive line. He later played at the University of Oregon where he was a left tackle, left guard and right guard under head coach Chip Kelly.

He spent three seasons in Eugene, redshirting in 2010 as the Ducks reached the 2011 BCS National Championship game. Oregon won the 2012 Rose Bowl and the 2013 Fiesta Bowl. Clanton was a captain on the 2012 team that finished 12-1 overall. Overall, the Ducks posted a 36-4 record during his playing career.

Clanton was invited to NFL training camps with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers.

A product of Bakersfield Christian High School, Clanton earned a bachelor’s degree from Oregon in applied economics, business and society in 2013.

Iowa State men’s basketball picked up a commit on Wednesday from 7-foot center JT Rock from Sioux Falls, SD.

Rock chose the Cyclones over offers from Creighton, Iowa, Purdue, and Kansas.

Rock is the second commit in the 2024 class, joining shooting guard Nojus Indrusaitis from Chicago, IL. The class is currently ranked third in the country by 24/7 sports.

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union has released regional wrestling assignments. The competition is broken down into four regions with two regions being contested at two different sites. Region 1 and 2 will compete at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City. Region 3 and 4 will compete at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines. Regional competition will be held on Friday, January 27th starting at 11:00 a.m. that day.

The Iowa State women’s basketball team took over in the second half to beat West Virginia 70-50 on Wednesday night. The game was tied at 37 at halftime and the Cyclones blew the game open with a 20-4 edge in the third quarter.

Stephanie Soares had a monster game with 13 points, 20 rebounds, and 3 blocks to lead the Cyclones. Ashley Joens dropped in 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Lexi Donarski added 15 points.

The Cyclones improved to 10-2 overall and 2-0 in the Big 12. Next up for Iowa Sate is a road trip to Oklahoma on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

Marcus Domask sealed a Southern Illinois win over Drake with a 3-pointer with 31 seconds. The Salukis toppled the Bulldogs 53-49 on Wednesay night in Carbondale.

Domask led the way with 21 points and 8 rebounds. The Salukis improved to 12-4 overall and 4-1 in the Valley, extending their winning streak to seven games.

Drake was led by 14 points from DJ Wilkins and Tucker DeVries added 11 points, 6 boards, and 2 steals. The Bulldogs led 30-27 at half but were outscored by 7 in the second half.

Next up for Drake is a home game on Saturday against Murray State at 5:00 p.m.

Michael Duax hit a game-winning putback as time expired to lift UNI to a 69-67 win over Valporaiso on Wednesday night.

Tytan Anderson led UNI with 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Panthers. Duax added 15 points and had 12 rebounds. Cole Henry added 10 points for the Panthers.

UNI led by 3 at halftime and did just enough to pull out the MVC road win. The Panthers improved to 7-8 overall and 3-2 in the Valley.

Next up for UNI is a home game on Saturday against Southern Illinois at 1:00 p.m.

Caleb Grill buried a late three to put Iowa State up 61-58 with 30 seconds left in the game and the Cyclones held on for a 63-60 win over Oklahoma on Wednesday night.

After Grill’s big three Oklahoma got a tip in two from Jalen Hill to make it 61-60 with 8 seconds left. On the ensuing inbound Tamen Lipsey was knocked to the ground and no foul was called resulting in an Iowa State turnover. Oklahoma then gave it right back on an attempted lob to underneath the basket that went out of bounds off the Sooners. Osun Osunniyi then sealed it with two free throws.

It was a wild game to start with Iowa State jumping out to a 25-7 lead from the outset, only to see Oklahoma storm back with a 20-0 run. It ended up tied at 29 at halftime.

Caleb Grill finished with 20 points and 4 steals. Osun Osunniyi had 12 points and 8 rebounds. Iowa State improved to 11-2 overall and 2-0 in the Big 12.

Next up for the Cyclones is a trip to 17th-ranked TCU on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
