South Dakota State wins FCS title over NDSU

The South Dakota State Jackrabbits won their first FCS National Football Championship on Sunday with a 45-21 win over rival North Dakota State.

The Jackrabbits secured the title with a big 2nd quarter scoring spurt, outscoring the Bison 24-7 in the period. Quarterback Mark Gronowski was 14 of 21 passing for 223 yards and 3 touchdowns. Amar Johnson ground out 126 yards and 1 score rushing, while Isaiah Davis added 103 yards and another score on the ground.

SDSU finishes the season with a 14-1 record. Former Glenwood standout Caleb Sanders is a starting defensive lineman for the Jackrabbits.

Iowa wins at Rutgers 76-65

Iowa made 12 three pointers and won at Rutgers 76-65.

(Gary Dolphin and Bobby Hansen on the Hawkeye Network) After starting Big Ten play 0-19 from the field sophomore Payton Sandfort broke out with 22 points, including four of five from three point range.

That’s Iowa coach Fran McCaffery. Senior center Filip Rebraca had another double-double. He finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

The Hawkeyes closed strong after Rutgers sliced Iowa’s 18 point advantage to five in the second half.

The Hawkeyes are 2-3 in the Big Ten and Rebraca talks about Iowa’s three game home stand that begins Thursday night against Michigan.

Rebraca says a fast start was a key on Sunday.

Council Bluffs native Max Duggan on CFP championship

Council Bluffs native Max Duggan leads TCU against defending champion Georgia Monday night in the title game of the College Football Playoff in SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. It is the final game of a career that has seen the former Lewis Central star overcome heart surgery and being demoted as the starter to become a Heisman Trophy finalist.

It also caps a magical season for a Horned Frog team that was picked to finish seventh at Big 12 Media days back in July.

No. 11 Iowa State women edged at No. 17 Oklahoma

The 11th ranked Iowa State women lost at 17th ranked Oklahoma 82-79. Senior center Stephanie Soares left the game in the first quarter with a leg injury. Coach Bill Fennelly says the injury will be evaluated today (Monday).

The Cyclones rallied after trailing by 11 entering the fourth quarter.

Ashley Joens led the Cyclones with 27 as they fall to 2-1 in the Big 12.

Drake women’s hoops beats Murray State

DES MOINES, Iowa – A big second half enabled the Drake women’s basketball team to overcome a 43-point performance by Murray State’s Katelyn Young and beat the Racers 80-67 at the Knapp Center on Sunday afternoon.

The 43 points were the most by a Missouri Valley Conference player this season, but Drake (8-4, 3-1) countered with balanced scoring and a quick-handed defense that produced a season-high 13 steals and led to a 26-14 margin in points off turnovers.

Maggie Bair and Sarah Beth Gueldner scored 18 points each to lead the Bulldogs, who shot 61.3 percent in the second half (19-for-31) and outscored Murray State (9-4, 2-2) 49-35 over the final two quarters.

The Bulldogs will conclude a three-game homestand by hosting Northern Iowa at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Drake handles Murray State

The Drake men’s basketball team rolled to an 82-64 win over Murray State at the Knapp Center on Saturday. The Bulldogs led by 15 at halftime and cruised to the victory.

5 players finished in double-figures for the Bulldogs, led by 17 from DJ Wilkins and 16 each from Darnell Brodie and Sardaar Calhoun.

Drake improved to 12-5 overall and 3-3 in MVC play. Next up for the Bulldogs is a Tuesday night game at Illinois-Chicago at 7:00 p.m.

UNI beats Southern Illinois

The UNI Panthers beat the Southern Illinois Salukis 69-57 on Saturday in Cedar Falls. The Panthers jumped out to a six-point lead by halftime and outscored the Salukis by the same margin in the second half.

Bowen Born led the Panthers with 27 points and 3 rebounds. Tytan Anderson added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

UNI improved to 8-8 on the season overall and 4-2 in the Valley.

Next up for UNI is a home game on Tuesday night against Murray State

Kalscheur’s three sends Iowa State past TCU

Gabe Kalscheur buried a step-back three with 3.5 seconds left to lift the No. 25 Iowa State men’s basketball team to a 69-67 victory over No. 17 TCU in Fort Worth on Saturday.

The Cyclones led nearly the entire game but let a 9-point lead slip away in the final three minutes to allow TCU to grab a 67-66 lead in the final minute before Kalcheur’s heroics.

Kalscheur led four Cyclones in double-figures with 15 points in the contest. The Cyclones improved to 3-0 in Big 12 play, something they haven’t done since the 1999-2000 season.

Iowa State is now 12-2 overall and will host Texas Tech next on Tuesday.

Iowa women grab big win at Michigan

The Iowa Hawkeye women’s basketball team big up a big ranked road win on Saturday with a 94-85 triumph over No. 14 Michigan.

The Hawkeyes outscored the Wolverines 23-19 in the second and 25-18 in the third quarter to build their lead. Caitlin Clark poured in 28 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Monika Czinano added 19 points and 8 assists and McKenna Warnock had 14 points for the Hawks.

Iowa improved to 12-4 on the season and will next up host Northwestern on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m.
