2023 Regional Dual Team Wrestling assignments

The IHSAA has released Regional Dual Team wrestling assignments for the 2023 postseason. Regional duals for all three classes are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31. The top eight teams in each class qualify for the State Dual Team Tournament, set for Saturday, Feb. 4 at Xtream Arena in Coralville.

Atlantic has been assigned to wrestle at Sergeant Bluff-Luton with a first round match-up with Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley. The winner of the first round dual will then face Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the final.

No. 10 Iowa women visit No. 2 Ohio State Monday night

Two of the contenders in the Big Ten women’s race collide Monday night when 10th ranked Iowa visits number two Ohio State. The Hawkeyes are 7-1 in the league race while the Buckeyes are 8-0 and 19-0 overall.

That’s Iowa coach Lisa Bluder who calls this a big opportunity for her team.

With a physical stye and pressure defense the Buckeyes are holding opponents to just 26 percent from three point range.

Chiefs get back to AFC Championship Game for 5th straight season

The Kansas City Chiefs are headed back to the AFC Championship game for the fifth straight season after defeating the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-20 on Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium.

Patrick Mahomes left for a period of the first half with an ankle injury but later returned to lead the Chiefs to victory. Mahomes finished with 195 yards passing and two touchdowns, the second one capping a 75-yard drive late in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. When Mahomes went our veteran backup Chad Henne came in and led a 98-yard touchdown drive, finished with a toss to Travis Kelce.

Kelce had a career-high 14 catches for 98 yards and two scores. He now has the second most receptions in NFL postseason history, behind only Jerry Rice. His 14 grabs was a new record for receptions in a playoff game by a tight end.

The Chiefs improved their record to 14-3 on the season. They will now host the Bengals in the AFC Championship.  We’ll have the game on KJAN.

Drake women dominate Valpo

The Drake women’s basketball team dominated Valparaiso 84-51 on Saturday at the Knapp Center. The Bulldogs outscored the Beacons 42-20 in the second half.

Katie Dinnebier scored 18 points and sank all nine of her free throws in the contest. She has now made 26 straight free throws. Anna Miller scored 17 points and pulled down 9 rebounds.

Drake improved to 11-5 overall and 6-2 in the Valley. Next up for the Bulldogs is a trip to Southern Illinois on Thursday.

UNI women beat Illinois-Chicago

The UNI women’s basketball team picked up a 79-44 win over Illinois-Chicago in Cedar Falls on Saturday. The Panthers outscored the Flames 23-8 in the second quarter to take control of the game.

Maya McDermott scored 12 points and Kam Finley added 11 for the Panthers.

UNI improved to 12-5 overall and 7-1 in the Valley. Next up for the Panthers is a visit to Missouri State on Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
