Iowa women take on Maryland tonight (Thursday)

Sports

February 2nd, 2023 by Ric Hanson

The six-ranked University of Iowa women take on eighth-rated Maryland tonight (Thursday), in Carver Hawkeye Arena. Hawkeye coach Lisa Bluder has praise for the Terrapins.

Bluder says Maryland comes in with a lot of momentum. “They’ve had five straight wins now they have almost four people in double figures so they’re hard to guard,” Bluder says. She says her team will have to be sound.

Maryland comes into the 7:30 game at 18-4 overall and 9-2 in the conference. Iowa is 17-4 overall and 9-1 in the conference.

SWAT Valkyrie excited to cap off inaugural season at State

Podcasts, Sports

February 1st, 2023 by admin

The SWAT Valkyrie wrestling team gets to cap off their inaugural season with six wrestlers competing at the first ever sanctioned girls state wrestling tournament on Thursday and Friday in Coralville. Valkyrie head coach Tiffany South said it has been a very rewarding process getting the program going.

The Valkyrie started this season as a cooperative program that draws student-athletes from CAM, Atlantic, Griswold, Nodaway Valley, and Southwest Valley and they have enjoyed strong participation numbers. Coach South said it’s been great to be involved in a lot of competition and she thinks it will only grow from here.

Many of the wrestlers are competing for the first time this season and Coach South said it has been awesome to see the team share their growth and successes.

Six wrestlers will be hitting the mats for SWAT at the State Tournament on Thursday and Friday at Xtream Arena in Coralville: Jazz Christensen, Ady Lundquist, Evy Marlin, Grace Britten, Ellen Gerlock, and Haley Armstrong. Coach South said their is a lot of excitement surrounding the team.

We’ll have reports on results throughout the tournament on KJAN. Jim Field will provide those reports at 10:45 a.m., 12:45 p.m., 2:45 p.m., and halftime of each of our evening basketball games. Listen to the full interview with Coach South below.

Big 12 and Iowa State announce 2023 football schedule

Sports

January 31st, 2023 by admin

IRVING, Texas – Iowa State will face 11 2022 bowl teams according to the 2023 football schedule announced today by the Big 12 Conference.

ISU will have six home games at MidAmerican Energy Field at Jack Trice Stadium and will begin the season playing host to Northern Iowa (Sept. 2). The Cyclones will host Iowa in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series the following week (Sept. 9) before their final non-conference game at Ohio (Sept. 16).

The Cyclones open Big 12 play at home against Oklahoma State (Sept. 23). It marks the first time since 1997, the Big 12 Conference’s inaugural season, that Iowa State will begin league play against the Cowboys in Ames.

Following a Sept. 30 date at Oklahoma, Iowa State returns home to honor Jack Trice’s legacy when it hosts 2023 College Football Playoff finalist TCU on Oct. 7, the day before the 100th anniversary of his tragic passing from injuries suffered during the Cyclones’ Oct. 6, 1923, loss at Minnesota.

Iowa State will play at Big 12 newcomer Cincinnati on Oct. 14, in the first-ever meeting between the programs, and following an Oct. 21 open date, travel to Baylor, Oct. 28.

The Cyclones will welcome Kansas (Nov. 4) for Homecoming to begin November, and then travel to Provo, Utah, on Nov. 11 for their fifth all-time meeting against BYU, and first since 1974.

ISU hosts Texas on Nov. 18 before closing its schedule Nov. 25 at 2022 Big 12 champion Kansas State.

Season ticket renewal information will be communicated to the public in early February.

Murray, Clark, Czinano, and Joens all named to Wooden Award Late Season Top 20

Sports

January 31st, 2023 by admin

Iowa men’s basketball player Kris Murray and women’s basketball players Caitlin Clark and Monica Czinano have been named to their respective Wooden Award Late Season Top 20 lists. Iowa State’s Ashley Joens was also named to the women’s list. The announcement was made Monday by the LA Athletic Club.

Chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts based on their performances during the 2022-23 season thus far, the list comprises of 20 student-athletes who are front-runners for one of the sport’s most prestigious honor.

Murray is also on the Oscar Robertson Midseason and Karl Malone Award watch lists. Murray (6-foot-8, 220 pounds) is averaging a team-best 20.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per outing.

Clark has been tabbed as the Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year, All-Big Ten by coaches and media (unanimous), Nancy Lieberman Preseason Watch List, AP All-American (unanimous), Naismith, Wooden Preseason Watch List, and The Athletic Player of the Year. This season, Clark is leading the Hawkeyes with 27.1 points, 7.9 rebounds and 7.9 assists per game.

Czinano was the fifth Hawkeye to surpass 2,000 career points and 38th all-time in Big Ten Conference history. Czinano and Clark were the first pair of teammates to accomplish those feats in the same season in Big Ten women’s basketball history. Czinano is averaging 18.1 points per game and is shooting 66% from the floor this year. She has shot 70% or better from the floor in five out of last six games.

From Iowa City, Joens has been outstanding for the Cyclones once again, leading the Big 12 and ranking nationally at 20.2 points per game. She has been in double figures of 18-of-19 games, over 20 points nine times and has a pair of 30-point games, the latest being her 32-point outing in the win over then-No. 14 Oklahoma on Saturday. Joens also has nine double-doubles on the season.
