UNI women dominate Indiana State

UNI dominated Indiana State 91-51 on Sunday in women’s hoops. The Panthers jumped on top right away with a 21-8 advantage in the first quarter.

Grace Boffeli led the Panthers with 23 points and 8 rebounds. Rachael Heittola had 14 points and 5 rebounds.

UNI improved to 15-6 overall and 10-2 in the MVC race. Next up for the Panthers is a trip to face Illinois-Chicago on Friday at 7:00 p.m.

Drake women roll past Evansville

The Drake women’s basketball team dominated Evansville 87-48 on Saturday at the Knapp Center. The Bulldogs snapped a two-game losing skid with the big win.

Maggie Bair led the way with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Drake beat Evansville for the 16th straight time.

The Bulldogs improved to 13-7 overall and 8-4 in the Valley. Next up is a trip to Valporaiso on Friday.

Drake picks up road win at Valparaiso in double OT

The Drake Bulldogs grabbed an 85-82 win at Valparaiso on Saturday in double overtime. The Bulldogs outscored the Crusaders 12-9 in the second extra session to snatch the win.

Tucker DeVries was big with 32 points and 11 rebounds. Roman Penn added 16 in the Bulldogs second straight double-overtime win after taking down UNI in the same fashion on Wednesday.

Drake improved to 19-6 overall and remain atop the Missouri Valley Conference race with a 10-4 mark. Four teams are currently 10-4 in the league.

Next up for the Bulldogs is a Tuesday trip to Murray State.

UNI drops home tilt with Bradley

The UNI men’s basketball team fell behind by ten points in the first half and couldn’t recover in a home loss to Bradley on Saturday 77-69.

The Braves had four players in double-figures led by 19 from Malevy Leons. Rienk Mast added 18, Connor Hickman had 17, and Duke Deen added 11.

UNI was led by 16 points and 6 rebounds from James Betz. Michael Duax added 14 points. The Panthers drop to 12-12 on the season. Next up for the UNI is a trip to Evansville on Wednesday.

Iowa State women fade in fourth quarter against Baylor

The Iowa State women were outscored 28-21 in the fourth quarter and came up short at home against Baylor 76-70 on Saturday night at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones had a one point lead heading into the final quarter but couldn’t hold on.

Sarah Andrews led the Bears attack with 21 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Nyamer Diew had 25 points and 5 rebounds for the Cyclones. Ashley Joens added 23 points and 6 boards.

Iowa State drops to 15-7 on the season and will now have a week off before a road trip to West Virginia.

Iowa squeaks past Illinois

Iowa rallied from 8-points down in the second half and edged past Illinois 81-79 on Saturday afternoon in Iowa City. Tony Perkins had a monster game to lead the Hawkeyes with a career-high 32 points. He scored 17 of Iowa’s final 28 points in the game.

Iowa also got 19 points and 7 rebounds from Kris Murray and 13 points from Filip Rebraca.

The Hawkeyes improved to 15-8 overall and 7-5 in the Big Ten. Next up for the Hawks is a trip to take on top-ranked Purdue on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. We’ll have coverage on KJAN with pregame at 5:00 p.m.

No. 13 Iowa State tops No. 8 Kansas

Iowa State played its way back into the Big 12 title hunt with Saturday’s victory over eighth ranked Kansas. The 13th ranked Cyclones posted a 68-53 win, bouncing back from a second half collapse at Texas Tech.

That’s Iowa State coach T.J.Otzelberger. ISU visits West Virginia Wednesday night. They begin the week 7-3 and in second place in the Big 12.

Boys district swimming hits the water today

Boys district swimming meets for the 2023 postseason will hit the water today.

District meets will start at 12:00 p.m. The fastest 32 individual swimmers and 24 relay teams from district competition will qualify for the state meet, which is February 10th and 11th at the University of Iowa’s Campus Recreation and Wellness Center in Iowa City.

Atlantic will compete at the Johnston District site along with Centerville, Des Moines East, Dowling Catholic, Johnston, Lewis Central, Newton, and WDM Valley. Atlantic head coach Dean Junker said his guys have shown great improvement the past few weeks and should compete well.

All sites will utilize digital tickets through IHSAA partner HomeTown Ticketing.

Denison-Schleswig races past Atlantic boys

Denison-Schleswig pushed the pace early and raced away from Atlantic 66-47 on Friday night at Atlantic High School. The Monarchs used tight defense and a quick transition game to jump on top of the Trojans early, leading 20-7 by the end of the first quarter. Atlantic never recovered and the Monarchs continued to pull away for most of the night. Atlantic head coach Derek Hall said the guys were just out of sorts from the start.

Carson Seuntjens led the Monarchs with a 17-point night and three others scored in double-figures. Luke Wiebers had 13, Lance Arkfeld dropped in 11, and Jaxon Wessel added 10. The Monarchs improved to 12-4 on the season and they’ll be back at it Saturday against Carroll.

Atlantic was led by 14 points from Colton Rasmussen but nobody else reached double-figures. The Trojans drop to 7-12 on the season and they will try to regroup for a home game with Harlan next Tuesday.

Atlantic girls control start to finish against Denison-Schleswig

The Atlantic girls basketball team started the game on a 12-0 and controlled the entire contest in a 56-18 win over Denison-Schleswig on Friday night.

The Trojans led 17-5 by the end of the first quarter and ballooned the lead to 30 by halftime. The Trojans did a nice job of getting the ball in the paint early and Paytn Harter dropped in 10 of her game-high 20 points in the first quarter. Atlantic head coach Dan Vargason said that early aggressiveness was key.

The Trojans locked down the Monarchs with their typical strong defense, forcing 21 Denison-Schleswig turnovers on the night.

Aubrey Guyer added 11 points and Jada Jensen and Madison Huddleson both finished with 10 for the Trojans. Atlantic improved to 16-4 on the season and will next up host Harlan on Tuesday.

Denison-Schleswig was led by 6 points from Kaina Schulz. The Monarchs drop to 3-15 and they will face Carroll on Saturday.
