Carr, Coleman advance to NCAA Quarterfinals

Sports

March 17th, 2023 by admin

TULSA, Okla. – Iowa State pushed two through to the quarterfinals during Session II of the NCAA Championships Thursday evening inside the BOK Center. David Carr and Marcus Coleman each earned second-round victories to stay on the championship side of their respective brackets.

Iowa State sits tied for 13th place with 12.0 points after day one action. All eight Cyclones are still alive for day two with two wrestlers on the championship side and six in the wrestlebacks.

Carr was Iowa State’s first quarterfinalist. He controlled from start to finish as he picked up his third win of the season against Northern Iowa’s Austin Yant. Carr secured six takedowns in the 15-4 victory.

The win sets Carr up with a quarterfinal match up against 2021 165-pound NCAA Champion Shane Griffith of Stanford.

Coleman won a nail-biter over Iowa’s Abe Assad in the second round. The pair were deadlocked at 1-1 entering TB-1 but the Cyclone managed a 30-second ride out in the first half. Assad gave Coleman an escape, looking for the winning takedown, but Coleman managed to evade the Hawkeye for a 2-1 win.

Casey Swiderski lived to fight another day with a 7-3 win over Pennsylvania’s Carmen Ferrante in the consolation first round. Swiderski had three takedowns in the match, including two in the final 30 seconds to seal the victory.

Jason Kraisser also picked up a win in the wrestlebacks with a 7-2 victory over Appalachian State’s Tommy Askey. Kraisser was active early with a takedown in the first period before adding another in the third.

Zach Redding fell to the wrestlebacks after a 12-4 defeat to the No. 3 seed Vito Arujau of Cornell.

Paniro Johnson couldn’t overcome an early 6-0 deficit after Penn State’s Shayne Van Ness took him feet-to-back in the first period. Johnson battled back but couldn’t dig out of the hole as he fell, 14-8.

At 197 pounds, Yonger Bastida was much the aggressor but couldn’t finish several prime opportunities against No. 4 seed Ethan Laird of Rider. Bastida was in deep on a leg several times but was eventually countered by Laird and gave up a takedown with 22 seconds remaining, falling 3-1.

Sam Schuyler dropped a heartbreaker, 2-1, to Northwestern’s No. 9 Lucas Davison. Schuyler began the final period on bottom, trailing 1-0, when Davison returned Schuyler to the mat hard and the Cyclone was forced to take injury time. The mat return was reviewed for an illegal slam, but no call was made.

Out of the review, Davison was given his choice, chose bottom, and earned an escape. Schuyler received a late point for stalling but was unable to secure the winning takedown.

Another early exit for Iowa in the NCAA Tournament

Sports

March 17th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

Auburn’s defense and toughness overwhelmed Iowa and it was another early exit in the NCAA Tournament. The Hawkeyes trimmed a 17 point Tiger lead to four but got no closer in an 83-75 loss in Birmingham. Iowa shot only 41 percent and finished seven of 27 from three point range as Auburn took advantage of the partisan crowd.

That’s Iowa coach Fran McCaffery who says where the game was played was not a factor.

Senior guard Connor McCaffery says the Hawkeyes dug themselves too deep of a hole.

Payton Sandfort led the Hawkeyes with 21 points as they finish 19-14.

Drake will be looking to post an upset Friday night when the Bulldogs play 16th ranked Miami in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament in Albany, New York. The combination of senior point guard Roman Penn and sophomore forward Tucker DeVries have led the Bulldogs to 13 wins in their last 14 games.

That’s Drake coach Darian DeVries. Miami standout forward Norchad Omier is questionable with an injured ankle suffered in the ACC Tournament.

Drake has an experienced team and several were part of an NCAA Tournament team two years ago.

That’s senior forward Garrett Sturtz who says the Bulldogs need to play well on both ends of the court.

That’s Iowa guard Caitlin Clark. The Hawkeyes will be heavily favored against the 15th seeded Lions.

Hawkeye guard Kate Martin says the Hawkeyes won’t be taking the Lions lightly.

Georgia and Florida State meet in the other first round game.

Sports

March 17th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State coach T.J. Otzelberger feels the Cyclones are ready for the NCAA Tournament. After stumbling down the stretch of the regular season the Cyclones take a 19-13 record into Friday’s first round game in Greensboro, North Carolina against Pitt.

Pitt advanced to the opening round by edging Mississippi State 60-59 in the First Four.

Senior guard Gabe Kalschey says the Cyclones have rebounded after a four game losing skid late in the regular season.

Intro. To Turkey Hunting this Saturday

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

March 16th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Massena, Iowa) – The Cass County Conservation Board is hosting an Introduction to Turkey Hunting program this Saturday, at the Outdoor Classroom shelter, located at 76977 Tucson Road, Massena, IA. (Two-miles south and two-miles east of Massena. Two-miles east of Highway 148 on Tucson Road, on the south sign….just look for the sign. The program begins at 10-a.m.  Cass County Conservation Director Micah Lee says turkey hunting remains popular.

Lee explains there is a big difference in hunting for pheasant and turkey: the time of year.

This Saturday’s program will focus on “Becoming a Turkey Hunter,” for first-timers and can serve as a refresher for those who may be a bit rusty where their hunting skills are concerned. CCCB employees will talk about scouting, calling, and equipment needed as well as different techniques and equipment used by successful turkey hunters.

This program will be great for someone who wants to start turkey hunting or those with more experience. The CCCB will have examples of calls, decoys, blinds and other tools used in the turkey woods. And, as with last year, there will be a drawing for a prize at the end of the event.

Bring a notepad to take notes, if you want, otherwise just show-up at the Outdoor Classroom this Saturday, March 18, 2023 at 10:00-a.m., to learn a few things and get started on your turkey hunting adventure. Micah reminds you, that we’re about three-weeks away from Youth Turkey Hunting Season.
