Iowa edged by FIU to open baseball series in Des Moines

The Iowa Hawkeye baseball team spotted Florida International an early 2-0 lead and lost 2-1, Thursday, to open a three game series in Des Moines. The Hawkeyes lost despite out hitting the Panthers 9-2.

That’s Iowa coach Rick Heller. The Hawkeyes had their chances late. They stranded a runner at third in the bottom of the eighth and left the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth. It was the first of three games at Principal Park and Heller was asked about the atmosphere in the stadium.[

Iowa’s lone run came on a third inning solo homer by first baseman Davis Cop. Game two of the series is tonight (Friday night).

Riverside Bulldogs Baseball Season Preview with Coach Cole Chapin

The Riverside Bulldogs are coming off a 12-2 loss in the second round of the Class 1A-Region 8 playoffs last season.

The Bulldogs have 25 guys out for baseball and are coached by Cole Chapin.

Coach Chapin had this to say about their season ending loss to West Harrison from last season.

Chapin says the Bulldogs will be returning everyone from last years team.

Chapin said on most days the Bulldogs get about 15 guys at practice with other spring sports going on.

Coach Chapin commented on what team’s goals for the season.

Riverside baseball team will open up their regular season when they travel on the road to take on Missouri Valley in Western Iowa Conference regular season game. The first pitch of that game will be thrown at 7:30 p.m.

AHSTW Vikings Baseball Season Preview With Coach Trey Brix

The AHSTW Vikings baseball Vikings baseball team is coming off a season ending 10-2 loss to Shenandoah in the first round of the Class 2A-Region 8 playoff bracket.

The Vikings lost only two players to graduation from last season and 26 players are out this season. AHSTW will be coached by Trey Brix.

Coach Brix said the Vikings team found ways to work hard over the offseason.

Brix commented on adding a good number of 8th graders to the roster.

The Vikings are going to rely on two seniors.

Brix elaborated on what his teams goals are for the season.

The Vikings next game will be Friday May 17th when they will take on Stanton Vikings in a non-conference game. First pitch of that game will be at 7:30 p.m.

Iowa State talks preparations for 2025 football opener in Ireland

Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard predicts 12 to 15 thousand Cyclone fans will travel to Ireland for the 2025 football opener. ISU will play Kansas State August 23rd of 2025 in Dublin.

Pollard says it will be a great showcase for the entire university.

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell did not hesitate to accept the invitation to play in Ireland.

It also means one of the biggest games in the Big-12 race will be played in August.

Fairfield’s Zillman wins boy’s 3A high jump

Eli Zillman of Fairfield cleared six-nine to win the boy’s class 3A high jump.

After clinching the win Zillman came up short in a bid to clear a meet record seven-feet.

Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s Charlee Morton wins 3A girls discus

Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s Charlee Morton defended her title in the girls’s class 3A discus. Her winning mark was 140-feet and nine inches.

It is the latest in a growing list of titles for Morton at the state meet and Drake Relays.

Distance races in 2A and 3A open state track meet

Distances rac es in 2A and 3A opened the morning action at the state high school track meet in Drake Stadium. After winning a pair of three thousand meter titles in 1A for Calamus-Wheatland, Noelle (no-ell) Steines won the 2A crown in her first attempt at Tipton High School. Her winning time 10 minutes, eight-point-85 seconds.

Steines jumped out to a comfortable lead with three laps to go and was never threatened.

Pella sophomore Marissa Ferebee cruised to the girls 3A three thousand meter title. She won the race by 17 seconds.

Solomon Zaugg (zahg) of Mediapolis used a strong kick to win the boys 32-hundred meter title in class 2A.

Zaugg says Mediapolis has lofty goals as a team this weekend.

Quentin Naumin (nah-min) from Western Dubuque won the boy’s 3A 32-hundred meter title. His winning time of eight minutes, 54-point-11 seconds was fourth all-time in Iowa.

Naumin made his move for the lead with two laps remaining.
