Reminder: Truckin’ on the Trails takes place Saturday in Cass County (IA)

(Atlantic, Iowa) – A reminder from The Station Where Your Friends Are: An event taking place this Saturday, June 3rd, “Truckin’ on the Trails,” will showcase various cycling opportunities and trails fun in Cass County. All Truckin’ on the Trails activities will take place at the Schildberg Recreation Area West Rotary Shelter (102 Buck Creek Rd. Atlantic, IA 50022).

At 10:30 AM, the event will kick off with the “Nishna Valley Trails Gravel Sampler” ride led by Jon Jordan. This ten-mile ride will visit both trails and gravel. Gravel riding has become
increasingly popular in the last few years, and those interested in learning about this sport are encouraged to attend. Prior to the ride, Jordan will give a primer on gravel skills vs. road skills.
Any “non-skinny” tire bikes will work for this ride. Participants will ride from Schildberg Rotary Shelter (West parking lot) to South T-Bone Trailhead (63395 Dunbar Rd. Atlantic) and back.

Then from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, Truckin’ on the Trails is hosting food trucks and live music at the Schildberg Rotary Shelter. Master Griller Catering, Atlantic Kiwanis, and Louie’s Shaved Ice will be selling food, and Sarah Selders will be singing live. Cass County Conservation and Nishna Valley Trails, a tax-emempt local nonprofit that promotes the development of recreational trails and cycling, will be sharing information on their organizations, and Bike Farm will be offering minor bike maintenance and door prizes.

At 1:00 PM a 1.5-mile kids ride will take off from the West Rotary Shelter. This ride will be a loop that will end back with the food trucks and music.

Whether cycling or walking, pushing strollers, or riding trikes, all people are welcome at Truckin’ on the Trails. Truckin’ on the Trails is just one of many events taking place across the nation on National Trails Day, the first Saturday in June. National Trails Day is an annual event hosted by the American Hiking Society that encourages support of the nation’s public trails. Trails have positive impacts on mental and physical health, and National Trails Day is a day of public events that invites thousands of trail users to participate.

A Cass County trails map can be found online at:
https://www.atlanticiowa.com/experience/cass-county-trails-map-2/. Hard copies of the map will be available at the event and are always available at the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce.

Des Moines to host a Half Marathon Saturday morning

Sports

June 1st, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Nearly 4000 runners from 42 states will gather at Saylorville Dam Saturday morning for the Dam to Des Moines Half Marathon. Race Director Michael Zimmerman says the run is expected to draw its largest crowd since before the pandemic.

The event was established in 1980 and was known as the Dam to Dam race.

Zimmerman says it is one of the few and biggest point-to-point running events in the country.

Zimmerman says there will be plenty of activities downtown after the race.

Iowa baseball plays North Carolina Friday night in NCAA baseball regional

Sports

June 1st, 2023 by Ric Hanson

It is Iowa against North Carolina Friday night in the opening round of an NCAA baseball regional in Terre Haute, Indiana. The second seeded Hawkeyes are 42-14 and have feasted on bullpens in averaging nearly eight-and-a-half runs per game. Coach Rick Heller says that will be a tougher challenge against the Tar Heels.

Heller says the Bullpen may be North Carolina’s biggest strength. The Tar Heels are 35-22.

It is Iowa’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2017 and the Hawkeyes believe they have what it takes to make a deep run.

Heller says the Hawkeyes have played with energy and confidence in winning 17 of their last 21 games.

Heller says the key will be how his team plays.

The opening game of the regional has top seeded Indiana State taking on Wright State.

Beth Goetz named UI’s Interim Athletics Director

Sports

June 1st, 2023 by admin

Deputy Director of Athletics and Chief Operating Officer Beth Goetz Thursday, October 27, 2022 (Brian Ray/hawkeyesports.com)

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Beth Goetz has been named the University of Iowa’s interim director of athletics, effective Aug. 1.

Goetz, who currently serves as deputy director of athletics and chief operating officer, will hold the Henry B. and Patricia B. Tippie Director of Athletics Chair. She was named interim AD after current athletics director Gary Barta announced May 26 that he will retire after 17 years at the university.

Goetz joined the Iowa athletics staff in September 2022 from Ball State University, where she served as director of athletics for four years. At Ball State, she supervised 19 Division I sports teams, all head coaches, and senior staff. Before that, she served as the chief operating officer/senior woman administrator in the University of Connecticut athletics department from 2016-18. She previously served as the University of Minnesota’s deputy athletics director from 2013-15 and interim athletics director during the 2015-16 season.

Goetz was named to the NCAA Competition Oversight Committee in 2018 and served as vice chair of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee in 2021-22. She was named by Women Leaders in College Sports as the 2022 NCAA Division I FBS Nike Executive of the Year and recognized by the Indianapolis Business Journal as one of the publication’s 2021 Women of Influence.

A former soccer student-athlete and college coach, she received a Bachelor of Arts from Clemson University in 1996 and a master’s degree from the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 2000.

A national search for Barta’s permanent replacement is planned for sometime in early 2024.

Goetz’s appointment must be approved by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.
