A special Senior Night for Lake Mills baseball

Sports

June 30th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Following Lake Mills’ senior night game Wednesday might against Forest City, over 100 people gathered behind the backstop to watch Coach Joel Koch and Shana Rogstad get their heads shaved. Caycee Barrett came to the plate in the sixth innings of Lake Mills’ loss to Forest City to a large applause from both fans wearing purple and gold and red and white. Barrett, a senior on the Lake Mills baseball team, was playing in his final regular season game as a Bulldog. Wearing his black number five jersey, Barrett strolled to the plate for an at-bat against Forest City sophomore James Hagen, despite his diagnosis of Ewing Sarcoma, a form of bone cancer, earlier this year.

Koch and his wife, Jenny, came up with the idea to start a GoFundMe for Caycee and posted it on social media, stating that if they raised two thousand dollars, Coach Koch would allow Barrett to shave his head on a senior night. Well, the Lake Mills community didn’t take long to respond. Within a few hours, the two-thousand-dollar mark was reached, and the plan was set in motion.

Community member Shana Rogstad announced earlier this month that if the donation totals exceed 15,000 dollars, she, too, would let Caycee shave her head. The Lake Mills and surrounding communities responded, surpassing the 15k threshold, and Rogstad held up her end of the deal, taking a seat on the bucket.

Trojan baseball falls short of comeback against Red Oak

Sports

June 29th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

The Trojan Baseball team lost 5-4 at home tonight against the Red Oak Tigers. In the top of the first Red Oak scored 3 runs from an RBI single thanks to Dawson Bond and a 2RBI double from Braden Woods. The game was 3-0 then.  The Trojans responded in the second with a sacrifice fly from Clevi Johnson making it 3-1. The batting action fizzled out and eyes were turned to the pitchers.

Jayden Proehl pitched a full 7 innings, had 4 earned runs, 8 hits, and 5 strikeouts. Proehl retired 12 straight batters heading into the sixth. The next two innings had Red Oak scoring 2 runs and they led 5-1 as the bottom of the seventh started.

There with bases loaded and 2 outs Easton O’Brien crushed a deep double having all three baserunners come home. The game suddenly turned 5-4 and the Trojans had a chance at coming back. It would end with the next batter hitting a line fly towards center and the ball being caught by Landon Cowse. The Tigers left Atlantic with a win.

After the game Coach Schilling discussed the changes that needed to be made and the effective staff that Red Oak has.

The next game for the Trojans is senior night and Coach Schilling is proud of this year seniors.

Red Oak is now (14-12) with a win and their next game is on Wednesday July 5th against either Missouri Valley or Treynor. The Trojans sit at (10-14) and will play Council Bluffs Jefferson on Monday July 3rd at home.

Iowa’s Deontae Craig talks summer workouts

Sports

June 29th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Deontae Craig could be the next break-out star on Iowa’s defensive line. The junior steps in at the defensive end spot vacated By Green Bay Packer rookie Lukas Van Ness. In 13 games last season Craig tied for the team lead with six and-a-half sacks. He has the potential to be Iowa’s best playmaker on the defensive front.

Craig also had 10 tackles for a loss and forced three fumbles. He feels that experience will help him this season.

The Hawkeyes open September second at home against Utah State.

Iowa State basketball expects improvement on offense

Sports

June 29th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

Iowa State basketball coach T.J. Otzelberger says a star-studded recruiting class will help the Cyclones be better on offense next season. The Cyclones are built on defense and led the Big 12 in that category last season but had their struggles on offense. They were last in the Big-12 at just under 67 points per game and connected on only 33 percent from three-point range.

Otzelberger says additional ball handlers at guard will help open up the court and take some pressure off sophomore point guard Tamin Lipsey.

Lipsey says the additional ball handers will make the Cyclones more effective on offense.

The Cyclones were 19-14 last season and lost to Pitt in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Caitlin Clark Named 2022-23 Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year

Sports

June 29th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Junior guard from the University of Iowa, Caitlin Clark, was named 2022-23 Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year, announced today by the Big Ten Conference Office.

Clark, from West Des Moines, Iowa, is the third Hawkeye student-athlete to win the award, joining Kristy Gleason (field hockey, 1994) and Megan Gustafson (women’s basketball, 2019). She is also ninth women’s basketball student-athlete to win the award, joining Gustafson, Purdue’s Joy Holmes (1991), MaChelle Joseph (1992), Stephanie White (1999) and Katie Douglas (2001), Penn State’s Kelly Mazzante (2004), Ohio State’s Jessica Davenport (2007), and Minnesota’s Rachel Banham (2016).

It is the eighth time a Hawkeye (men’s or women’s student-athlete) has earned the Big Ten Athlete of the Year award, and the third time in the past five seasons. Iowa’s past winners include wrestlers Ed Banach (1983), Barry Davis (1985) and Brent Metcalf (2008), football player Chuck Long (1986), men’s basketball player Luka Garza (2021), Gleason, and Gustafson.

Clark won the 2023 Honda Cup on Monday, and was named Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year as by THE Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA). She also won the 2023 Naismith, Wooden and Wade Trophies along with the Associated Press and USBWA Ann Drysdale Player of the Year honors.

She is also a two-time winner of the Nancy Lieberman Point Guard Award and is the first-ever three-time winner of the Dawn Staley Award. She also won the Honda Sport Award for Basketball in April.

Clark led her team to its first-ever NCAA Championship game and helped post the Hawkeye’s most wins in a single season. During the NCAA Tournament, she posted the first 40-point triple-double in NCAA Tournament history (men’s or women’s) and broke the NCAA single-tournament records for most 3-point FG made (24) and most points scored (191). This season, she is the only player in the nation with 1,000 points, 240 rebounds, 310 assists and 45 steals.

Overall, Clark became the first player in Division I women’s basketball history to record more than 1,000 points and 300 assists in the same season and was fastest Division I player (men’s or women’s) to reach 1,500 career points over the last 20 seasons.

Off the court, she is a two-time First Team Academic All-American and was named the 2023 CSC Academic All-America of the Year.

The Big Ten Athletes of the Year are selected by a panel of conference media members from nominations submitted by each institution.
