Branstad Says Officials Wrong On Dove Hunting Move

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

August 22nd, 2011 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Gov. Terry Branstad says state environmental officials clearly overstepped their bounds when they sought to ban lead shot in dove hunting. Speaking Monday at his weekly news conference, Branstad argued that efforts by the Natural Resources Commission to ban lead shot was the latest example of state bureaucrats abusing their power. A legislative panel delayed the action last week, and the matter will go to the Legislature next year. Branstad says he’s restructuring the commission and wants to send a message to other state entities that they shouldn’t take action better left to lawmakers. Environmentalists say lead shot can be deadly to other animals who can consume the pellets.

Chiefs Trying to Build Team Chemistry in Camp

Sports

August 22nd, 2011 by Jim Field

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin spent Sunday’s practice riding a stationary bike and doing work with a trainer on the sideline, his right hand heavily bandaged after he reportedly got into an altercation with running back Thomas Jones.  Head coach Todd Haley would not address the situation that
occurred last week, calling it “family business.” Neither player was available to comment following practice.  Jones took part in the full workout in the Chiefs’ first
practice since breaking training camp in St. Joseph, Mo. They’re trying to get back on track after losing their second preseason game Friday night at Baltimore.
They play the St. Louis Rams in their annual in-state rivalry game this Friday night.
