Hawkeye recruit Malloy to change plea

Sports

September 2nd, 2011 by Ric Hanson

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Sioux City prep football star who has committed to playing football next year for Iowa is expected to change his not guilty plea to four misdemeanor charges in Nebraska. Court documents in Dakota County, Neb., show a plea and sentencing hearing for Michael Malloy is set for Sept. 12. Malloy is charged with obstructing a peace officer, trespassing, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving without headlights. He was arrested on Aug. 15 in connection with an incident early on July 31 in South Sioux City, Neb. A police office says in an affidavit that Malloy ran from a vehicle that the officer had pulled over. Malloy is a senior running back at Bishop Heelan High School.

Iowa State wary of speedy Panthers in opener

Sports

September 2nd, 2011 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State will open its third season under coach Paul Rhoads on Saturday night against Northern Iowa. Rhoads says the Panthers are faster than his Cyclones. The Panthers are the prohibitive favorites to win the Missouri Valley Football conference this season and are among a handful of teams in serious contention for the FCS title. Iowa State beat Northern Iowa 27-0 last season.

Vandenberg, Coker lead Iowa new backfield

Sports

September 2nd, 2011 by Ric Hanson

Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi spent the past two seasons handing off to a revolving door of talented running backs. The Hawkeyes are hoping new starter James Vandenberg can spend the next two years handing off to Marcus Coker and getting the heck out of the way. Iowa’s new backfield duo of Vandenberg and Coker will make its debut on Saturday when the Hawkeyes host FCS school Tennessee Tech in the opener. Vandenberg will be making his fourth career start, and Coker his fifth. They’ve never started at the same time, but Iowa is confident the pair will emerge as focal points for its rebuilt offense in 2011.

Tennessee Tech-Iowa Capsule

Sports

September 2nd, 2011 by Jim Field

 By The Associated Press
     Tennessee Tech (0-0) vs. Iowa (0-0), 11 a.m. (BTN)
     Series Record: First meeting.
     WHAT’S AT STAKE
Saturday’s opener will allow junior James Vandenberg to settle
into his new role as the Hawkeyes starting quarterback. Iowa also
has six new starters on defense, which won’t have much time to gel
with a trip to Iowa State looming. The most important thing for the
Hawkeyes will be to survive the game without any major injuries.
Tennessee Tech is hoping to push for the Ohio Valley title, and a
decent showing against a Big Ten team could help them do just that.
     KEY MATCHUP
Tennessee Tech’s front seven vs. Iowa RB Marcus Coker. Coker is
one of the more physical backs in the country, and the Golden
Eagles won’t likely see anyone like him all year. The Hawkeyes will
have an easy afternoon if they can just give it to Coker between
the tackles and let he and his offensive line march down the field.
     PLAYERS TO WATCH
Iowa: WR Keenan Davis. It’s now or never for Davis, who’s in
line to be the Hawkeyes’ second option next to star Marvin McNutt.
Tennessee Tech: WR Tim Benford. He ranks second in school
history with 151 receptions and is third with 2,174 yards
receiving.
     FACTS & FIGURES
Iowa has won its last 10 openers by an average of 31.5 points
and is 17-4 at Kinnick Stadium since 2008…Tennessee Tech’s alumni
include Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith, who spent 12 seasons with
the Golden Eagles from 1987-98…The Hawkeyes could have as many as
eight new starters, including Davis and safety Collin Sleeper.

Northern Iowa-Iowa State Capsule

Sports

September 2nd, 2011 by Jim Field

 By The Associated Press
Northern Iowa (0-0) vs. Iowa State (0-0), 6 p.m., No TV
Series Record: Iowa State leads 19-4-3.
     WHAT’S AT STAKE
Northern Iowa is one of the few teams Iowa State is expected to
beat this season, and the Cyclones can’t afford to let this one
slip away given how tough their schedule appears to be. The
Panthers could gain some serious momentum for their FCS season and
avenge last year’s ugly 27-0 loss in Ames by beating Iowa State.
     KEY MATCHUP
Northern Iowa QB Tirrell Rennie vs. Iowa State’s secondary.
Rennie is one of the best running quarterbacks in the FCS, but he
threw just eight TD passes and 11 interceptions in 2010. The
Cyclones will look to force the Panthers into passing situations
and hope Rennie will make mistakes like he did in tossing two picks
a year ago.
     PLAYERS TO WATCH
Iowa State: QB Steele Jantz. It’s the first career start for
Jantz, who figures to be dangerous with his feet. If he can make
plays with his arm, too, the Cyclones could have a find on their
hands.
Michigan State: RB/KR Carlos Anderson. He returned two kickoffs
for touchdowns in 2010 and could even things up for the Panthers on
special teams.
     FACTS & FIGURES
When Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads says the Panthers have “track
speed,” he isn’t kidding. According to Panthers spokesman Colin
McDonough, three of the four members of the school’s 400-meter
relay team will play on Saturday…The game will mark the debut of
a new $5 million scoreboard at Jack Trice Stadium, which will be
five times larger than the old one…Northern Iowa is 9-20 against
FBS opponents since 1985.

Atlantic Coach Chris Jahnke says:

“It was nice to start the season with a win. We have had lots of practice and it was time to get the season going. The team had a few first match hiccups but for the most part they played well. I was most impressed with how the team stayed composed when they fell behind a couple of times. One of our strengths will be how well this team works together. Katie Groves played  well on the outside while Nora Walker and Sam McConnell controlled the game from the middle. Our setters, Paige Kennon and Shelby Worth did a nice job of spreading the ball around. We will need to continue to improve each night if we are to reach our goals.”

Atlantic stats:

  • Sam Petersen —   6/10 attacks, 4 kills
  • Nora Walker  —  3/5 attacks, 2 kills, 2 blocks
  • Katie Groves  —  8/10 attacks, 6 kills, 1 block, 15/16 serves, 3 aces, 25 assists
  • Sam McConnell  —  7/8 attacks, 6 kills, 2 blocks, 8/12 serves, 1 assist
  • Paige Kennon  —  3/5 attacks, 2 kills,  12/13 serves, 1 ace, 6 digs, 10 assists
  • Shelby Worth —  3/4 attacks, 3 kills, 1 block, 7/7 serves, 9 digs, 9 assists
  • Taylor Barry  — 17/20 serves, 6 digs
  • Mackenzie Holmes — 9/9 serves, 2 aces, 15 digs

Firm gets Iowa sports rights to 2026

Sports

September 2nd, 2011 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The University of Iowa athletics department has given the company that manages its sports marketing a contract extension through 2026 and the right to sell the name of its basketball court in exchange for guaranteed payments totaling $114 million. Learfield Communications beat out several firms in 2006 for a 10-year contract to exclusively broadcast Iowa athletic events on the radio, negotiate corporate sponsorship agreements and generate other advertising income. Iowa was guaranteed $55.1 million. But in a move that has escaped public scrutiny, records show Iowa agreed in November 2009 to extend the contract by another 10 years and give Learfield the ability to sell naming rights to the court at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Cable television provider Mediacom in February secured the naming rights for terms that haven’t been released.
