Boyer Valley Reverses Decision on Football Team

Sports

December 1st, 2011 by Ric Hanson

The Boyer Valley Board of Education has done an “about-face” on switching from 8-man to 11-man football for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. During a special meeting held Wednesday night in Dunlap, the board reversed a 6-0 decision they made last week, during which they approved changing from 8 man to 11 man football for the next two-years.

In a unanimous decision Wednesday though, the board elected to continue with 8 man football. According to Iowa High School Athletic Association rules, the district had until today (Thursday), to make their final decision.

The meeting last Monday caused quite a stir in the Boyer Valley School District. After Boyer Valley Superintendent Thomas Vint and Coach Jay Petersen discussed the matter further, they recommended the district stick with 8 man football. Petersen was quoted in the Denison Bulletin as saying, “Vint asked me if we wanted to play 8 man football the next two years and I said yes. That was the only input I had.”

After much deliberation from school board members, coaches, students and parents, the special meeting was scheduled, and the previous decision reversed. Boyer Valley went 6-4 the previous two years in 8 man and qualified for the state playoffs.

Sports

December 1st, 2011 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Anthony James scored 17 points, Matt Morrison added 14 off the bench and Northern Iowa beat Iowa State 69-62, picking up its fifth win in its last six meetings with the Cyclones. Marc Sonnen had 10 of his 12 points in the second half for the Panthers (6-1), who have won five straight since a loss at Saint Mary’s two weeks ago. Sonnen buried a pair of late 3-pointers to put Northern Iowa on top 58-54, and Seth Tuttle scored inside to give the Panthers a six-point lead with 2:05 left. Royce White and Chris Allen each scored 15 points for Iowa State (5-2), which was just 4-of-18 shooting from 3-point range and was outscored 17-8 down the stretch.

Wiley’s 17 Lead Boise State Past Drake 108-64

Sports

December 1st, 2011 by Ric Hanson

BOISE, Idaho (AP) – Drew Wiley scored a season-high 17 points and hit all five 3-point attempts to lead Boise State to a 108-64 victory over Drake on Wednesday night. Kenny Buckner scored 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting and Thomas Bropleh also had 16 as the Broncos (5-1) recorded season highs for points and 3-pointers, with 14. Anthony Drmic added 15 points for Boise State, which shot 61 percent and outrebounded Drake 43-24. Rayvonte Rice scored 19 points and Ben Simons 14 for the Bulldogs (4-3). Drake’s last lead was 8-6. Boise State responded with a 10-0 run and led comfortably thereafter while notching its highest total since scoring 113 against Eastern Oregon on Nov. 29, 2003. The Bulldogs were allowing just 59.5 points and hadn’t given up more than 65 before Boise State’s barrage. The Broncos led 45-23 at halftime.

Walnut/A-H-S-T to Begin Sharing Next Year

News, Sports

November 30th, 2011 by Jim Field

The Walnut School Board voted at their Tuesday night meeting to enter a sharing agreement with the A-H-S-T schools.  Walnut students will attend classes at A-H-S-T for about three periods per day and share all athletics with A-H-S-T beginning with the 2012-2013 school year.  Walnut Superintendent Jim Hammerich said they voted on shifting academics from Atlantic to A-H-S-T for three periods in the afternoon, just like they currently do in Atlantic.  The board voted for a two-year contract with A-H-S-T.  The Walnut school board also voted  to continue sharing Junior High sports, unanimously sending all boys sports to A-H-S-T.  The board also voted 3-2 to share all girls sports with A-H-S-T.   The board’s vote ends the sharing agreements with Atlantic.  Hammerich said it is a better fit for the Walnut kids, with all the logistics, transportation costs etc., and having Junior High already in Avoca all weighing in on the board’s decision.  He said the Atlantic sharing experience the last five years was wonderful, but it will end this school year.  Hammerich says the two school board’s will continue to discuss future whole-grade sharing between A-H-S-T and Walnut.
