DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Rayvonte Rice scored 29 points as Drake won its final game before the start of Missouri Valley Conference play, defeating Central Arkansas 87-64 on Wednesday night. Jordan Clarke added 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs (7-4), who shot 52 percent from the field and hit 10 of 25 3-pointers. Jeremy Jeffers and Ben Simons had 11 points each. Dewan Clayborn scored 23 points for Central Arkansas (5-6), which has lost three straight since winning five in a row. Drake led just 11-9 with 14:38 left in the first half before it started to pull away. The Bulldogs shot 56 percent from the field in the first half and converted 10 Bears turnovers into 21 points to lead 49-30 at the break. Drake led by as many as 25 in the second half.
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State fans have secured 4,800 New Era Pinstripe Bowl tickets for the Dec. 30 game between Iowa State and Rutgers. The contest from Yankee Stadium kicks off at 2:20 p.m. CST in New York, N.Y. In addition to nearly reaching the 5,000-ticket mark, the current total includes 172 tickets that have been purchased by Cyclone fans for distribution to charities.
Iowa State officials are hoping Cyclone fans will boost the ticket total past the 5,000 mark. Fans still have the opportunity to order tickets that will be allocated to various charities.
Tickets for the 2011 Pinstripe Bowl cost $115 or $45 each.
Tickets will be available online until Thursday at 8 a.m.
Tickets will be available by phone through the Iowa State Athletics Ticket Office (toll free at 1-888-478-2925 or locally at 515-294-1816), or in person at the Iowa State Athletics Ticket Office until Noon on Thursday.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A spokesman for University of Iowa President Sally Mason says she supported the decision to suspend star running back Marcus Coker for the Dec. 30 Insight Bowl against Oklahoma. Spokesman Tom Moore said Wednesday Mason has been kept apprised of the situation involving Coker, whose suspension was announced Tuesday by the athletic department as a result of violating the student-athlete code of conduct for unspecified behavior. Ellie Herman, one of two faculty representatives to athletics, said she was briefed on the details but could not release them for privacy reasons. Herman says that, based on what she was told, she supported the suspension and the move wasn’t taken lightly. UI Police Chief Chuck Green says his department isn’t investigating Coker, who will not travel with the team to Tempe, Ariz.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State had it going inside and outside and there wasn’t much Northern Iowa could do about it. Chelsea Poppens scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Cyclones led the Panthers by 16 at halftime and pulled away in the second half for a 84-57 victory. Iowa State improves to 7-2 while Northern Iowa falls to 7-4.
Iowa State dominated on the boards, winning the rebound battle 48-20. Nikki Moody tallied 15 points, as the Cyclones outscored Northern Iowa 44-12 in the paint.
It became apparent early that Iowa State would have its way in the first half. The Cyclones pushed away from the Panthers with Poppens scoring in the lane four times in a four-minute span as Iowa State turned an 11-10 lead into a 25-13 advantage. Iowa State scored 15 second-chance points in the first half to Northern Iowa’s two points. The Cyclones controlled the boards, outrebounding their intrastate foe, 25-10 in the first half.
Both teams shot the three well in the first half, with Iowa State hitting on 6-of-11 shots (.545 ) and UNI 5-10(.500). The difference was inside and the Cyclones led 46-30 at the break.
Iowa State will have a bit of Christmas break before playing host to New Hampshire on the first night of the Cyclone Challenge at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 29 in Hilton Coliseum.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa running back Marcus Coker has been suspended from playing in the Insight Bowl later this month after violating the university’s student-athlete code of conduct. The university announced Coker’s suspension on its athletic department website Tuesday. The announcement says the issue involves university policies but did not elaborate. Coker, who is a sophomore from Beltsville, Md., will not travel with the team to Tempe, Ariz., for the Dec. 30 bowl game against Oklahoma. Coker was the Hawkeyes’ starting running back this season and was named to the all-Big 10 second team.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa defensive line coach Rick Kaczenski has left the program to pursue another coaching job. Hawkeyes coach Kirk Ferentz announced Kaczenski’s departure Tuesday. Kaczenski, who played offensive line at Notre Dame, has been coaching at Iowa since 2005. He became the defensive line coach in 2007 after two seasons as a graduate assistant. Iowa’s defensive line was among the nation’s best during Kaczenski’s tenure. The Hawkeyes featured players such as Mitch King, Adrian Clayborn, Christian Ballard and Karl Klug and finished in the top-10 nationally in scoring defense from 2008-10. Kaczenski is the second defensive coach Iowa has lost in the last few weeks. Seventy-year-old coordinator Norm Parker recently announced he’ll retire after the Dec. 30 Insight Bowl against Oklahoma.
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz has reaffirmed his commitment to the Hawkeyes, saying he fully intends to coach in Iowa City in 2012 and “well beyond.” Ferentz released a statement late Tuesday night in response to another round of speculation about his future. Ferentz’s deal with Iowa runs through the 2020 season and pays him just under $4 million a year. Ferentz says he wants to emphasize that he’s very happy with the Hawkeyes, adding that he’s got a great staff and student-athletes, and strong support from university president Sally Mason and athletic director Gary Barta. Ferentz has been the head coach at Iowa since 1999 and is the longest-tenured coach in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes (7-5) will face No. 19 Oklahoma in the Insight Bowl on Dec. 30.
