Tonight (Jan. 17th) on KJAN – Iowa vs. Purdue in Men’s Hoops

Sports

January 17th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Hawkeyes are looking for their third Big Ten road victory in four tries when they take on Purdue this evening at Mackey Arena. The Hawks have won at Wisconsin and Minnesota. Tonight’s game will be their first return game with a conference opponent this season. Purdue won 79-76 in Iowa City in the Big Ten opener on Dec. 28th, with Robbie Hummel leading the way with 16-points and 11-rebounds. Purdue swept the season series with Iowa three times in the last four years. The Boilermakers have lost two of their last three games, the latest a 67-62 setback to Wisconsin at home. Iowa has defended the three-point line well in its three Big Ten victories, holding opponents to 15 of 82 (18.3%) from long range in those games.

Pre-game coverage on the Hawkeye Radio Network begins at 6-p.m., with the tip-off at 7, here on KJAN.

Beltran Pickup Gets Big Thumbs Up From Team

Sports

January 17th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — No St. Louis Cardinals player can be happier to have Carlos Beltran on their side than pitcher Kyle Lohse. The new right fielder is a .564 career hitter against Lohse with four home runs, six doubles and 12 RBIs. Add in 11 walks and the switch-hitting Beltran has a stunning .647 on-base percentage. Lohse, a 14-game winner last year, joked at the team’s Winter Warmup that Beltran was the greatest player in history. The 34-year-old Beltran got a two-year, $26 million free agent deal after a strong comeback season with the Mets and Giants, rebounding from two injury-plagued years. The Beltran pickup helps the World Series champions move on from the loss of Albert Pujols. The title team, minus Pujols, will be honored at the White House on Tuesday.

Iowa’s Derby to transfer after position change

    Sports

January 16th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa football player A.J. Derby is leaving the program after a season in which coach Kirk Ferentz moved him to defense from quarterback. The school said Monday that Derby, an Iowa City native, had been granted a release from his scholarship and will transfer elsewhere. Derby thanked his coaches but said, “unfortunately, I don’t feel this is the best fit for me personally to reach my goals as a student-athlete.” He initially won the backup quarterback job last fall as a redshirt freshman, completing 3 of 6 passes for 30 yards. But he was suspended for two games in October after he was arrested on charges of public intoxication and criminal mischief. When Derby returned to action, Ferentz had him practicing at linebacker and playing in games on kickoff coverage.

Attorney to conduct independent investigation into alleged hazing incident

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — An attorney representing three alleged victims of a reported sexual assault involving the wrestling team at Nodaway Valley High School in Greenfield says he wants an independent investigation. Two members of the wrestling team were arrested last week. Eighteen-year-old Mikel Anthony Feick and 17-year-old Jacob Wayne Schliessman, both of Greenfield, are charged with second-degree sexual abuse.  Fieck has been released from the Adair County Jail in Greenfield, on $25,000 bond. Schliessman plead not guilty to the offense last Friday, and has waived his preliminary hearing. He’s scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning (Jan. 19th). Schliessman is currently being held on $25,000 bond at the Juvenile Detention facility in Edlora.

Attorney Martin Fisher, of Adair said Monday, that he’s hiring the Critelli law firm in Des Moines to investigate the allegations. Police say the alleged assault occurred on Dec. 19th in the high school’s wrestling room. Local law enforcement and the school district are also investigating.

Iowa meat lockers overloaded with venison as deer hunting season ends

    Ag/Outdoor, Sports

January 16th, 2012 by Ric Hanson

Iowa has more than 80 custom meat lockers that process farm-raised pork and beef, but at this time of year, they’re busy with another type of meat — venison. John Lawrence, a livestock specialist at the Iowa State University extension, says many consumers are turning to venison as the costs of more traditional meat products rise. He says as venison grows in popularity, it’s keeping many small town facilities busy. Lawrence says, “Particularly at this time of year, we think about deer season and the number of deer that are processed through these small plants to the point that if I wanted to have a hog butchered to put in my freezer, I might have to wait until February to get it in because they’re processing the deer from hunting season.” Although there’s nearly one of these processing facilities per county, many struggle to pay a competitive wage while at the same time being large enough to support any family members who may eventually take over. Lawrence says while these facilities have plenty of work for the next few weeks, it’s sometimes a struggle the rest of the year.

He says, “Many of those same business challenges we see in agriculture and up and down Main Street, and if we aren’t able to bridge those gaps and solve those problems, we see a lot of those smaller, family-owned businesses go by the wayside.” Lawrence says in some cases, the custom processor brings more business into town when people come to pick up their meat. According to the Iowa Department of Agriculture’s website, the state has 83 custom meat lockers, with another 38 state-inspected facilities.

Iowa AD: Coach’s Chair Slamming Crossed the Line

    Sports

January 16th, 2012 by Jim Field

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s athletic director says coach Fran McCaffery went too far when he slammed a chair during last week’s 95-61 loss at Michigan State.

Gary Barta said Monday he supports the second-year coach and loves his passion for the game. But he said it’s important that “his passion doesn’t cross a line that distracts from our greater goals” and that’s what happened last week.

Barta said he’s spoken with the Big Ten Conference and McCaffery and “from all three perspectives, last week’s incident is done.”

The outburst started when McCaffery was whistled for a technical foul. During the break, he picked up the chair and slammed it to the court while yelling at his players. Video of his actions spread.

McCaffery said last week he had no regrets or apologies.
