CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) — Rayvonte Rice hit two free throws to force overtime, then made a fast-break layup to put Drake ahead to stay in a 75-68 victory over Southern Illinois on Wednesday night. Rice, who finished with 18 points, made two foul shots to tie the game 63-63 with 30 seconds left. He then broke 64-64 tie with his basket with 3:12 remaining in overtime. Ben Simons’ 20 points led the Bulldogs (12-7, 5-3 Missouri Valley), who won their fourth in a row for their longest winning streak in two years. Aaron Hawley added 16. He and Simons hit three 3-pointers apiece. Jeff Early had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Salukis (6-13, 3-5), and Mamadou Seck had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Dantiel Daniels matched Early with 15 points, and Kendal Brown-Surles had 13, including three 3-pointers. Neither team ever led by more than seven points.

The Drake Bulldogs will be in search of their fourth straight win, tonight, when they visit Southern Illinois in Missouri Valley Conference play. The Bulldogs are 4-3 in the league race and Coach Mark Phelps says they will face a tough challenge against a Saluki team that has gotten healthier and better. Junior Ben Simons was a big factor in Drake’s win streak. He averaged better than 19 and a half points in the three wins and was named the MVC player of the week. Phelps says the Bulldogs have made more of a commitment on the defensive end and it is showing up on the scoreboard. Southern Illinois coach Chris Lowery says Simons and Rayvonte Rice are a difficult combination to guard.
Iowa State is one of just six teams in the country with four players who have made at least 25 3-pointers. Babb has 43, Allen 36, Christopherson 30 and Tyrus McGee 25. White is on pace to become just the second ISU player to lead the team in scoring, rebounding and assists. The first: Fred Hoiberg, now the Cyclones’ coach. Oklahoma State has five freshmen in its eight-man rotation and three are starters: Williams, Nash and Cobbins. The Cowboys are holding opponents to 39 percent shooting from the field and 31 percent from 3-point range. Okie State has won four straight against ISU and 12 of the last 14. Tip-time at Hilton Coliseum is at 8-p.m. The game is being televised on ESPNU/ESPN3.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Robbie Hummel scored 17 points to help Purdue defeat Iowa 75-68 on Tuesday night. Hummel also had 11 rebounds and affected the game in many ways, despite shooting just 5 for 14 from the field. Lewis Jackson scored 14 points, Ryne Smith scored 12, Kelsey Barlow had 11 points and seven rebounds and Terone Johnson added 10 points for the Boilermakers (14-5, 4-2 Big Ten), who bounced back from a 67-62 loss to Wisconsin that ended their 26-game home winning streak. Zach McCabe scored 20 points, Roy Devyn Marble had 18 and Matt Gatens added 12 for the Hawkeyes (11-9, 3-4), who were coming off a 75-59 win over Michigan. The Hawkeyes led by 11 points in the first half, but didn’t shoot well after that. Purdue swept the season series, having won 79-76 in Iowa City on Dec. 28.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The number of deer killed during the recent hunting season was down about 4 percent from last year. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says in a news release Tuesday that Iowa hunters killed nearly 113,000 deer during the season that ended Jan. 10. That is also down about 21 percent from 2006. Although the numbers of deer taken are down, the DNR says the number of deer licenses issued has remained about the same since 2006. Dale Garner, chief of the DNR’s Wildlife Bureau, says the reduced kill numbers are the result of the reduced deer population. He says officials will review the deer harvest and make proposals to reduce the number of deer killed and stabilize the state’s deer population.
