Iowa coach Fran McCaffery says the Hawkeyes are getting some much needed rest. The Hawks fell to 3-4 in the Big Ten with a Tuesday night loss at Purdue and don’t return to action until next Thursday against Nebraska. McCaffery says the time off will allow the Hawkeyes to concentrate on the practice floor. The last couple of weeks have been a roller coaster ride for the Hawks but McCaffery says he has not been able to see the bad performances coming. Iowa is 11-9 overall.

The Iowa Hawkeye women broke open a tie game with a 17-4 run midway through the second half in a 69-57 win over Wisconsin in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes caught fire in the second half and made 66 percent of their shots. Jamie Printy led Iowa with 25 points. The Hawkeyes are now 3-3 in the Big Ten and next up visit Penn State on Sunday.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Hunting mourning doves has been legal in Iowa for nearly a year, but the issue still isn’t settled at the Capitol. A Senate subcommittee on Thursday discussed using lead shot ammunition in hunting the birds. The state’s Natural Resources Commission last year unanimously voted to ban the practice, but a legislative committee put the ban on hold.
Sen. Dick Dearden, D-Des Moines, says the commission overstepped its bounds in banning lead shot. A resolution he backs to overturn that ban advanced out of the meeting. Environmental advocates told committee members Thursday that lead shot is toxic and can harm animals when eaten. Hunting advocates say the harm is minor and no good alternatives to lead shot exists. The measure now goes to the full Senate Natural Resources Committee.
AUSTIN, Texas – Yvonne Anderson’s floater in the lane with 0.7 seconds left lifted Texas to a 62-60 win over Iowa State Wednesday night at the Frank Erwin Center.
Anderson’s shot came after ISU used a 7-2 run over the final 1:33 to tie it at 60-60. Trailing 58-53, freshman Nikki Moody drove past Chassidy Fussell and got the bucket and the foul to close to within two. After Ashley Gayle made a layup with the shot clock about to expire, Lauren Mansfield was fouled and converted both free throws.
The Cyclones then recorded a stop at the other end before Poppens was fouled by Gayle with 17 seconds left. Poppens, who finished 7-for-8 at the line, converted both free throws to tie the score.
The Longhorns ran the clock down and went to Anderson, who dribbled right and hit a leaner in the lane with 0.7 seconds left. The Cyclones last ditch effort, a pass down the court by Poppens, was broken up giving the Longhorns the win.
In the opening stanza, Texas jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead just a few minutes into the game. The Cyclones were able to fight back and take the lead at 14-12 following back-to-back threes from Lauren Mansfield and Brynn Williamson. The Cyclones pushed their lead to 20-16, their largest of the half, behind a pair of free throws from Christofferson.
The rest of the half was a back-and-forth affair with Texas grabbing a 26-25 lead after Fussell hit a pair of free throws with five seconds left to send the teams to the locker room.
Iowa State was led by Moody’s 14 points. Hallie Christofferson and Brynn Williamson were also in double-digits with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Fussell led the Longhorns with 20 points and Anderson chipped in 14.
The Cyclones held a 34-30 edge on the glass, led by Poppens’ seven rebounds. Iowa State was also 17-for-19 from the free-throw line.
The Cyclones will be back in action Sunday at Hilton Coliseum when they host No. 17 Texas Tech. Tipoff is schedule for 1:30 p.m. on FSN.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Scott Christopherson’s buzzer beater was a first. Christopherson banked in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cap a late rally that gave Iowa State a 71-68 victory over Oklahoma State on Wednesday night. “I’ve never done something like that before,” the senior guard said. “Not even in high school, not even in middle school. It was a good feeling.” And quite a thrill for the Hilton Coliseum crowd of 12,397, which was squirming after the Cyclones fell behind 66-60 with less than three minutes to play. But Christopherson hit a 3-pointer and driving layup to cut the lead to one, and after Keiton Page sank two free throws for Oklahoma State, Tyrus McGee nailed a 3 to tie it at 68-all with 16.8 seconds remaining.
The Cowboys had a chance for the final shot, but McGee, who gave the Cyclones a huge lift off the bench with 17 points, knocked the ball off Markel Brown’s leg, and it rolled out of bounds with 4.8 seconds left, giving Iowa State possession. “He was our energy guy all night long,” Iowa State coach Fred Hoiberg said. “We don’t have Tyrus tonight, no way we win that ballgame.” Iowa State (13-5, 3-2 Big 12) inbounded, and Christopherson dribbled up the floor. He stopped 2 feet from the 3-point line and launched his game winner over the 5-foot-8 Page, touching off a wild celebration among the ISU players. Christopherson was mobbed, then jumped up onto the scorers table to salute the crowd. After a video review by the officials, the basket stood. “I didn’t know he could jump that high,” Hoiberg cracked. Christopherson and Royce White also scored 17 points each for the Cyclones. Keiton Page and Le’Bryan Nash led Oklahoma State (9-9, 2-3) with 21 points each.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Toure’ Murry scored 24 points, including a layup with 1:21 to play that gave Wichita State the lead for good, in a back-and-forth 71-68 victory Wednesday over Northern Iowa. Murry added a jumper with 12 seconds left for the final margin. Northern Iowa’s Marc Sonnen’s game-tying 3-point attempt in the closing seconds was off the mark. Garrett Stutz added 17 points and Joe Ragland 13 for the Shockers (16-3, 7-1 Missouri Valley). Anthony James led the Panthers (13-7, 3-5) with 16 points, and Seth Tuttle had 15. Northern Iowa led by as many as eight in the second half and by five, 64-59, after a Jake Koch jumper with 4:20 to play. But a Murry jumper, a Carl Hall layup and two Murry free throws put the Shockers up 65-64. Deon Mitchell’s two free throws gave UNI the lead back before Murry’s layup, and Ragland added two big free throws.
