ST. LOUIS (AP) — Rayvonte Rice scored 18 points and Ben Simons had 16 as Drake defeated Bradley 65-49 Thursday night in the opening round of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament. The seventh-seeded Bulldogs (17-14) advance to the quarterfinals on Friday when they’ll face No. 2 seed Creighton. Drake finished in a five-way tie for third place at 9-9 in the Missouri Valley — its second-highest finish in 26 years — but tiebreakers dropped the Bulldogs to the No. 7 seed. Walt Lemon scored 16 points and Dyricus Simms-Edwards had 14 for 10th-seeded Bradley (7-25), which shot 34 percent from the field and hit just 4 of 20 3-point attempts. Drake, which beat Bradley for the third time this season, dominated inside with a 40-22 advantage on points in the paint.
Western Christian 62, OA-BCIG 54
Western Christian beat the defending champion and now has a chance to win a title of its own.
The fifth-ranked Wolfpack put together an 8-0 run late in the game to take the lead and toppled No. 1 OA-BCIG 62-54 in the Class 2A semifinals, ending the Falcons’ 52-game winning streak.
With the victory, Western Christian moves into the state championship game at 8 p.m., the first appearance in the basketball finals for a school long known for its outstanding volleyball teams.
Brooke Wolterstorff led the way with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Kim Kroeze added 13 points, including three key 3-point baskets in the second half. Alissa Pollema added eight points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals for Western Christian, which has no seniors in its starting lineup and is now 24-3.
OA-BCIG lost for the first time since the semifinals of the 2010 state tournament and finished 26-1. Morgan VanDerSloot led the Falcons with 22 points. Jessie Pauley, who’ll play at Northern Iowa next season, added 12 points and nine rebounds.
In a back-and-forth game, OA-BCIG built a six-point lead in the first half, fell behind by four in the third quarter, then rallied to pull ahead. Pauley’s two free throws gave the Falcons a 50-49 lead with 3:29 left before some clutch shooting at the line put the Wolfpack ahead to stay.
Pollema went 4-for-4 at the line, Kenzie VandeVegte sank two free throws and Kroeze fed Wolterstorff for a layup, sending Western Christian into a 57-50 lead with 1:43 to play.
Four straight free throws by VanDerSloot cut the lead to 57-54 with 1:13 remaining, but the Wolfpack hit five of eight free throws to wrap it up.
Western Christian finished 23 of 35 at the line and outrebounded OA-BCIG 41-33.
Pella Christian 60, IKM-Manning 49
Clutch shooting and solid defense down the stretch has put Pella Christian in the Class 2A state championship game.
Sparked by Paige Engbers’ 50-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer ending the third quarter, the 15th-ranked Eagles pulled away to beat No. 3 IKM-Manning 60-49 in semifinal action.
They’ll take on No. 5 Western Christian in the title game at 6 p.m. Friday, a rematch of a midseason game that Western won 74-72. Pella Christian has won 15 of 16 since then and is now 23-3.
Christina Nolte led three Pella Christian scorers in double figures with 14 points. Tayler Stursma added 12 points and seven rebounds, while Jasmin Schelhaas scored 10. Nolte went 4-for-6 from 3-point range and handed out three assists.
Tember Schechinger, Kaylee Blake and Kenzie Cast led IKM-Manning with nine points each and Liz Halbur scored eight. Schechinger, who’ll play at Northwest Missouri State next season, handed out six assists and blocked three shots. Blake led all rebounders with nine.
The Wolves, in the state tournament for the sixth time in eight years, finished the season 24-3.
Pella Christian rallied after falling behind 15-6 in the first quarter. A 14-0 run in the second quarter that included 3-pointers by Schelhaas and Cali Vink pulled the Eagles into the lead, but IKM-Manning came right back with three straight 3s to go up 26-22.
The Wolves led 26-24 at halftime and the game stayed close until Pella Christian made its move at the end.
Pella Christian was leading 44-42 when Engbers launched a desperation shot from just beyond half-court as the third quarter ended. The ball banked in, giving her team a 47-42 lead and momentum heading into the final quarter.
The Eagles started the fourth quarter with a 6-2 run and were in control the rest of the way, holding the Wolves to one field goal in the period.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) – The St. Louis Cardinals have scheduled a Thursday afternoon news conference to announce a new contract for four-time Gold Glove catcher Yadier Molina. The 29-year-old Molina is a lifetime Cardinal entering the final year of his contract. He’s considered one of the best defensively at any position, winning a platinum glove last season in voting by fans, and also is coming off the best offensive season of his career. Molina batted .305 in 2011 with 14 home runs and 65 RBIs, and added 12 RBIs during the team’s World Series title run. He’s been durable, too, averaging 138 games the last three seasons.
AMES, Iowa- Iowa State head men’s basketball coach Fred Hoiberg will be inducted into the 2012 National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Hall of Fame, announced today by the NFHS.
Hoiberg is among 12 individuals in this year’s class. Since 1982, the NFSA has annually honored athletes, coaches, contest officials, administrators and others for their extraordinary achievements and accomplishments in high school athletics. The induction ceremony is July 11 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville, Tenn.
An Ames, Iowa native, Hoiberg led his Ames High School team to the 1991 Iowa Class 4A boys basketball state championship, Ames’ first state title since 1976. In the 1991 state tournament, Hoiberg was named captain of the all-tournament team after shooting an incredible 75.0 percent from the field (42-of-56).
Hoiberg won Iowa’s Mr. Basketball Award as the state’s top player in 1991. He averaged 29.8 points and recorded a career-high 51 points vs. Indianola as a senior.
A multi-sport star, Hoiberg didn’t just excel on the hardwood. He was an all-state quarterback, capturing Iowa’s Gatorade Player of the Year honors in 1990 as the state’s top gridder. He was the signal-caller on two state playoff teams and is the school’s career leader in passing yards and total offense.
Hoiberg also finished second in the high jump at the 1991 state track meet, clearing 6-6, and ran the 200-meter leg on the state-champion-winning medley to help Ames High win its sixth-straight Class 4A state track title.
Hoiberg later went onto a successful career in basketball at Iowa State. A two-time All-Big Eight selection, Hoiberg earned All-America honors and was an Academic All-American as a senior in 1995. He finished his career as the third-best all-time scorer (1,993) in Iowa State history, earning Big Eight Co-Male Athlete of the Year honors in 1995.
The 52nd pick in the 1995 NBA Draft, Hoiberg enjoyed an outstanding 10-year career in the NBA. He played for three teams (Indiana Pacers, Chicago Bulls, Minnesota Timberwolves), leading the NBA in 3-point percentage in his final season in 2005.
Hoiberg is now in his second season as Iowa State’s head basketball coach. The Mayor has led the Cyclones to one of the biggest turnarounds in Big 12 history in his second year, directing Iowa State to a 21-9 record and 11-6 conference mark. ISU’s 11 wins in league play is the third-most in school history.
Hoiberg was inducted into the Ames High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2001, Iowa State’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005 and Iowa High School Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
Hoiberg joins former Iowa State stars Dan Gable (1984) and Gary Thompson (2000) as members of the NFHS Hall of Fame.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will hosting public meetings on March 6th, to discuss possible changes in the hunting and trapping regulations for this fall. The changes would affect deer and waterfowl hunters as well as hunters and trappers who pursue bobcats and otters. Proposed changes would stabilize deer numbers in some areas, potentially add a third zone for waterfowl and increase the harvest number of otters and bobcats.
Dr. Dale Garner, chief of the wildlife bureau, says regulation changes for deer would allow deer numbers to stabilize in areas of the state where numbers have been reduced to the department’s goal while still allowing hunters to harvest extra does in areas of the state where numbers need to be reduced. He says “Without these changes deer numbers in some areas of the state will continue to decline and Iowa will lose its standing as one of the best states for hunting whitetail deer. Failure to make these changes could adversely affect rural areas since deer hunters spend nearly $200 million annually.” The proposed changes for the waterfowl season are due to a change by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service which now allow states to have three zones and a split waterfowl season.
The public meetings on March 6th from 6- to 9-p.m., will be held locally, in: Carroll; Council Bluffs; Creston and Onawa. Bedford 45, LeMars Gehlen Catholic 36
In its third state tournament appearance, Bedford has a chance to win its first championship.
The third-ranked Bulldogs got outstanding balance on offense, played solid defense and beat No. 9 Le Mars Gehlen Catholic 45-36 to reach the Class 1A title game.
Bedford held Gehlen Catholic to one field goal during a 14-minute stretch while building a nine-point lead, then held off the Jays’ comeback attempts down the stretch.
Savanna Thornton led Bedford with 11 points, while Caila Raymond scored 10 and grabbed 12 rebounds. Kayla Lindenmeyer added nine points for the Bulldogs, Peyton Russell scored eight and Kendyl Gruttemeyer scored seven to go with 10 rebounds.
North Mahaska 46, West Sioux 38
North Mahaska will get a chance to write a perfect ending to its dream season.
Junior Mallory Boyle led a game-changing run in the third quarter and the top-ranked Warhawks advanced to the Class 1A state championship game with a 46-38 victory over No. 5 West Sioux.
North Mahaska recovered from a frigid start to remain unbeaten through 27 games and will play third-ranked Bedford for the title at 6 p.m. Friday. West Sioux finished 25-2 after playing in the state tournament for the first time.
Boyle led the winners with a strong stat line, putting up 12 points, six rebounds, four steals, three assists and two blocks. Kate Ray added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Warhawks and Hannah Ferguson scored eight.
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (18-10, 9-8 Big 12) rolled over Kansas State (18-11, 9-8 Big 12), outscoring the Wildcats 36-16 in the second half en route to a 57-33 Big 12 victory Wednesday in Hilton Coliseum on Senior Night. The victory, the school’s first ever on Feb. 29, moved Iowa State into fourth-place in the Big 12 by virtue of sweeping Kansas State this season.
Iowa State’s defense limited Kansas State to 29 percent shooting. The Wildcats’ 33-point scoring total was the fewest Iowa State has conceded in a conference game in the Big 12 era. Nikki Moody led the Cyclones with 15 points, including a trio of 3-pointers. Hallie Christofferson tallied 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds and Lauren Mansfield had 13 points.
The Cyclones swamped the Wildcats despite having leading scorer and rebounder Chelsea Poppens on the floor for just 17 minutes because of foul trouble. She scored four points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Iowa State quickly built on its 21-17 halftime lead with a 14-4 run out of the gate after intermission that included 3-pointers by Christofferson and Mansfield. The Cyclones led 35-21 at the 14:34 mark of the second half and never looked back.
Neither team was in sync during the first half as the two squads combined for 19 turnovers. Iowa State got a bump in the final two minutes of the first stanza as two Christofferson free throws, a 3-pointer by Moody and a bucket by Christofferson with three seconds remaining gave Iowa State at its four-point lead at halftime.
Iowa State outscored Kansas State 22-4 off turnovers.
Iowa State can finish lower than fifth in the Big 12, and concludes the regular season Saturday at 11 a.m. CST at No. 1 Baylor in Waco, Texas. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Net.
